One Year Later
Possibly the most terrifying and incredible day of my life was the day that Pele came into this world. Much like Emmi, I’d barely been sleeping, wanting to be there for her and ease as much of her pain in those last weeks as possible. But then her stomach lit on fire.
My father and I talked to Phoenix about it after the fact. She said that Pele had started to feel the pain of Emmi’s contractions, which at that point, Emmi wasn’t feeling because she was in constant pain from her stomach expanding too fast for her human body. But when they became strong enough that Pele felt them, she’d shifted, trying to escape and that’s what caused Emmi’s pain.
