Dorothy's question made Carl hesitate. He began to understand why Melissa had kept this a secret from him. It was true that the truth about the catacombs was not something one would want the public to know about. It would only create unnecessary panic among the common folk.
Someone had taught Carl the phrase "ignorance is bliss" before and he used to think it was nonsense. However, now that he knew that this world was facing an invasion from various planes, he suddenly felt that this idiom could make sense under some circumstances. He hesitated and was not sure if he ought to tell Dorothy the truth or not.
The woman could sense his hesitation and became rather displeased. She made a face and said, "If you don't want to tell me, then forget it. I don't want to know anymore."
