Carl did not expect Frank and his subordinates to get through to the main hall this quickly. He looked anxiously at Melissa, only to find that the once confident countess was now trembling all over, as if she was terribly frightened.
That surprised him, because in his memory, Melissa was either beautiful and poised, or bold and charming. She was never weak and fragile like this. He realized that she was probably putting on an act, but who was her audience?
