Kane’s POV
I had been walking the corridor, intending only to check on the guards’ rotation near Ava’s chambers, nothing more.
But then I heard her laughter.
I froze.
It was light, unguarded, the kind of sound I hadn’t heard from her since before the rogues had taken her. For a second, it filled something hollow in my chest but then I saw who she was with.
Lucas.
They turned the corner together, their shoulders were close, her cheeks flushed, both of them smiling like the weight of the world had disappeared.
The sound of her laugh hit me like a blade because it wasn’t me making her laugh,It was him.
I didn’t move, couldn't breathe. I Just stood there in the hall like a sentinel, forcing every muscle in my body to stay still when what I really wanted to do was snarl.
