FENRYS' POV
--
Slipping out through the only window that isn’t sealed shut, I close it behind me, “Column, seal it.” And even as I say it, the words die in my throat, hurting my chest.
Stop it, I tell myself.
She’s just a girl.
“A very pretty girl,” Helion, my wolf, purred. I shut him out. I shut out the sound of the others laughing. I shut out the screams coming from inside. I shut out everything.
“Last chance…” Column drawls as he holds the nail to the window. I nod at him, and he starts sealing the window.
Each thump has me thinking of her. Each hit reminds me of how she searched for me as Alpha Johnathan led her to the back. He probably tried a window, and failed. I almost snorted at the idea of his face when he realized it couldn’t open— almost…but he looked so sure. He looked confident in getting out.
My eyebrows draw together as I step back, eyeing the length and thickness of the building. “I’m going for a leak.” I announce, and nobody questions me as I stride off and around the building.
Remaining silent on my feet, I walk around the entire building when I hear soft whispers. “Come on, Johnathan. Where are you?” I tense. Johnathan…the Alpha. I peek around the corner, and there Luna Fray stands, well…paces— right in front of an open passageway in the wall. I pull back, shaking my head. I have to approach her without startling her…I have to act concerned…
Fuck.
Straightening my shoulders, I walk around the corner. Her back is turned to me, and she doesn’t seem to notice my appearance. “Luna Fray, how funny it is to find you out here,” I watched as she whirled with horror, her eyes sharpening at the sight of my unfamiliar face. “Who are you?” She asks with determination. “Give her what she wants,” Helion beamed.
“I’m Alpha Fenrys, here with the treaty. I was outside, and it seems I can’t get back in…Is everything alright?” I portray the best concerned guest I could be and watch her defensive walls crumble, fear and desperation blinding her. “Oh,” She breathed with relief, “Can you help, there’s a fire.” She turned, looking at the passageway with desperation, “It’s just to get people out,” She said pathetically, her eyes twinkling with unshed tears. Without hesitation, I stepped forward, nodding, “Of course.”
But then again, I don’t need to keep my word to a corpse.
“This way,” Luna Fray turned her back to me, and I didn’t hesitate to snap her neck. I laid her body in the passage way and whistled, and Column, Gregory and Lucas came running around the corner, and I just pointed, “Close it, seal it. I’ll be back.” I announce, and turn, “Where are you going?” Column asks. I didn’t turn as I said, “I’m off on a hunt, wait here.”
Following the faint, lingering scents up the trail, I keep my footsteps silent and my heart beat steady. The moon was shining bright with no clouds in the sky, and that’s when I hear it. A male’s voice. “You think you saw because your brain is f*****g damaged.” My steps falter. That’s f*****g harsh.
I moved forward, and stepped out from behind the tree, and there, in front of me, stands Rust with that girl, the girl with the shiny blonde hair and bright smile. He talked to her like that?
“That’s no way to speak to a lady,” I grin, watching Rust whirl, and her eyes, dark blue with specks of lighter blue, lock with mine.
“Who the f**k are you?” Rust growls, “Let her go.” I demand, “Mind your f*****g business,” Rust retorts, adjusting his grip on the girl. Her eyes are lined with worry, her cheek slightly red.
Did he slap her?
Noticing my stare, Rust pulled her back, “Who are you?” He asks again, and I force a smile, showing off my enlonged canines, “I’m here with the treaty…” I lie, my smile growing, “But right now…let’s just say,” I lift my hand, swirling it, “I’m your worst f*****g nightmare,” I shrug, giving only a fraction of a second for the words to settle before I attack.
Rust let go of the girl, and as she spun, darting away, I realize who she is…why she looks familiar.
I punch Rust, and his strikes were precise, but not fast enough for me, because I dodged every blow he threw, and I gave her a few second— fine, I gave her thirty seconds to run before I snapped his neck, and there’s something about watching a large male drop to the floor like a sack of sand that’s satisfying.
Dusting off my hands, I fix my shirt before following her scent, a scent that’s now laced with fear and anger.
“Sunling!” I call out, “You can't run forever!” I taunt, my voice echoing through the woods.
A sharp grunt of pain echoes across the land, and my gaze turned to the pile of rocks. Striding over, I peered over the edge only to find a beautiful silver wolf.
I’ve never seen a wolf so beautiful. “And here I thought of you as a sunling with pretty golden locks, but it seems you’re actually a Crescent Flower.”
‘My, my…” Helion purred in appreciation of the piece of art in front of me. The wolf growled at me, holding my gaze, shifting on her massive paws.
I smile down at the wolf, “Why don’t you come up here, Crescent Flower?” I nodded to the rock beside me, and her head tilted as if she were confused. “Yes, you.” I clarify, and her eyes narrowed on me, assessing the threat.
Raising my hands, I show her it’s empty, “I’m not going to hurt you.” And for some reason, it was the truth— because if she is who I think she is, then she’s the answer to all my prayers. She’s the key.
Her silence and unwillingness to move makes me uneasy, but I give them the chance to discuss their options, and then…she starts to climb up towards me, her eyes never leaving mine.
Smart girl. Very smart…
The silver-haired wolf stood before me, eyes large, claws scraping against the rock, readying to flee if she had to.
“Give me the girl,” I purr, grinning at her, slackening my posture to be less of a threat. It takes a few seconds, but the large silver fur wolf shifts, becoming smaller, hair retracting. The girl looked up at me, blonde tendrils falling around her face, her eyes bright and dark at the same time, and as the moon catches light in them, they look like they sparkle.
I can smell her fear, and it rots like hot garbage. “You’re frightened.” I beam, ecstatic that she’s scared. It’s more fun that way.
Well, it was fun, until her heartbeat evened out and she stared at me blankly as if she could become insane any second. She stood, slowly, and I took a step towards her, holding her gaze even if my eyes wanted to roam across her body.
That’s not why I’m here. That’s not why she’s the key.
“There, there,” I croon, running my hand over her hair, removing the strands from her face, “It is lovely to see you again,” I smile, and her eyes narrowed on me.
It was thrilling to not know her next move. She could bolt, and I would chase. She could fight, and I wouldn’t mind pinning her to the ground. She could bite, and well, that’s a little exciting if I have to admit.
She has a very pretty mouth, soft looking, plump…it’s perfection actually.
Her neck craned back, and I waited for her to say something as her lips parted slightly, but what I didn’t see was the punch she threw, sending my head knocking back, causing a grunt to slip from my lips as I fell backwards, and landed right on my ass.
Fuck, she’s strong and fast. Heat dripped from my nose to my lips, and I stared up at her in utter disbelief and I couldn’t stop the smile spreading across my face as awe struck me.
Because from here, I knew.
I definitely knew.
“Oh, Briar.” I purred, loving how her name rolled off my tongue. After so many stories…it’s enthralling to finally see her, meet her, to experience her in the flesh. She’s just as her mother described her.
“You and I…” I jump to my feet, wiping the blood from my nose with the back of my hand as she slowly backed away from me, “…are going to have so much fun.”
She didn’t seem to like that, because her eyes darkened, face contorting with rage, and I could see her calculations, and I leaped before she could take her second step, my fingers wrapping around her ankle, and I pull it, hard and fast, from right underneath her, a shrill scream escaping from her lips as she hit the ground hard, face first, “There, there.” I consoled, rising, standing over her with feet on either side, and I couldn’t resist to touch her hair. It’s so soft, so silky. She slowly turned onto her back , touching her head, looking disoriented and messy, but then her feet shot up, kicking towards my torso, her hands reaching for my shirt, and within a span of a blink, she tosses me over her head, and I land on my back, groaning as the air is knocked out of me.
Fucking hell, I’m getting my ass handed to me tonight.
“It’s because she’s pretty,” Helion chuckled, finding all of this so amusing.
