Ally was completely disorientated when we got back to her. Adam’s arm was too broken to carry her and she was too heavy for me. There was no point in calling for help because we hadn’t had signal all day.
Despite the pain, Adam grabbed her one arm, I grabbed the other and we got her to her feet. I threw a towel around her and Adam and I walked her slowly back to the truck, stopping from time to time for both of them to catch their breath enough to walk a little further. Once at the truck Adam got in the back and we laid Ally across his lap.
I got into the driver’s seat and set off down the dirt road.
“I don’t know where I’m going,” I said looking back at Adam for help once we neared the end of the dirt road. It was getting dark and the shock was setting in. I didn’t recognise where we were anymore.
“Left, Teal, and hurry.” His voice sounded panicked. I was too scared to look back, Ally had been quiet for so long.
I threw my foot down on accelerator and clutched onto the wheel so tightly it felt as though my hands would cramp. We drove for sometime before I spotted a village peaking through the tops of trees ahead.
“Do you want to try call for help?” I asked Adam without turning back. He didn’t respond.
“Adam?” this time I turned to look at him on the back seat. His eyes were glowing yellow as he stared out of the front windscreen. I screamed and slammed on breaks. The smell of burning rubber filling the car and making my eyes water.
“Don’t panic, they’re here to help.” Adam finally said after we came to a complete stop. I turned back to look at him, his eyes now the kind, big brown eyes I’m used to. He looked at me and then looked out the front of the windscreen. I followed his gaze. As the smoke from the tyres cleared I noticed two huge beasts standing not too far from us on the road.
They seemed even bigger than the ones I saw earlier. One was a golden brown and the other, slightly bigger, was pitch black. Both of them had glowing yellow eyes. These aren’t beasts I realised. These are wolves.
I then locked eyes with the black wolf and my whole body went cold. I’d seen this moment over and over in my mind. It was like deja vue but stronger, more intense. I couldn’t move, I felt my body break into a cold sweat. Am I cold? Am I scared? Should I scream? Should I run? So many questions ran through my mind but my body was paralysed. Slowly it started to walk towards the truck. Neither of us taking our eyes off of each other.
I was vaguely aware of what was happening behind me. Doors opening and closing, panicked voices, the rustling of boxes. But nothing could tear me away from the eyes in front of me. Familiar in some way. The wolf neared the front of the truck, never blinking. Never loosing my gaze.
I could see its breath now, the warmth causing a small mist around its snout. It slowly walked up to my window. Its head was twice the size of mine, it crouched down slightly to look into the truck at me. Our faces were inches away from each other, I would be able to smell and feel it's breath if it wasn't for the window. I couldn't bring myself to blink, my eyes were burning, but I continued staring. Then something in the back seat caught it’s attention and just like that it ran off.
I breathed out, realising then that I had been holding my breath the entire time.
The passenger door next to me opened causing me to jump. Adam got in, shut the door and turned to me, “drive, Teal, turn at the next right, please hurry!”
I looked back to see someone else now in the car, a large guy with dark blonde hair rummaging through a first aid kit. “Teal, PLEASE,” Adam pleaded, bringing me back to reality. I threw the truck into gear and accelerated.
Adam guided me towards a small road leading off the main road. It was surrounded by tall trees making it impossible to see where we were headed. The light above the trees however, made it clear we were coming up to some kind of a village or town.
We turned down another road that had a straight path to the biggest gates I had ever seen. They towered above us with metal finishings that looked like a coat of arms with wolves. They opened as we got nearer. I realised then that the walls on either side of the gate went on for miles, I couldn’t see where they ended.
“There’s an ambulance just inside the gate to the right, they’ll take it from here,” came a voice I didn’t recognise in the back seat. As we entered the gate the ambulance and a group for people in scrubs came into view. I pulled up next to them.
I got out the car and watched as the quickly loaded Ally onto a stretcher and guided Adam into the back of the ambulance with her. They sped off while those who were left spoke amongst themselves while standing against a nearby car.
I stood against the truck, alone. Looking at the the grass in front of me and replaying the events of the last couple hours. “What…what just happened?” I said to myself as I slid down the side of the truck, brought my knees up and buried my head in my hands.
