His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were turning white. I wanted to reach over and hold them. Help him calm down. But I knew now wasn’t the time.
In my head I practised what I could ask to try break the silence. I thought about it over and over again until I finally mustered the courage to ask. “Did you um, did you get my note?” Again my voice was barely recognisable, it felt good to be near him again but I was also still so intimidated by his presence.
He was silent for a long time before he spoke. “I’ve taken care of humans before. Those who have run from us, who have put our secret at risk.”
Taken care? Did he mean? That’s not what I expected him to say. My whole body started to shake, was I next?
He stole a glance at me, clearly satisfied he got the reaction he wanted.
“However,” he added. “None have ever left their contact details behind, so I guess there’s that.” If this was his way of easing my fear it wasn’t working.
“You said we would talk yesterday, but we didn’t. Then you were gone all day today and would only be back later. You said I wasn’t a prisoner and yet I can’t leave. I can’t fetch my belongings. What choice did you leave me?” The tears were threatening to spill from my eyes.
There was a long pause before he spoke again.
“There was an emergency. I never intended to have you wait this long. For that I am sorry. But I had to make sure my village was safe. It’s been a long day. Tomorrow morning we will discuss everything and provided we come to an agreement, I will drive you to the airport myself. If you want.”
I wanted to fight him. To tell him that I wanted answers tonight. But in all honesty I was exhausted. I needed a hot shower, something to eat and a good night’s sleep. So I just nodded in response and stared out the window.
Back at the pack house we were greeted by Ally who was standing at the door with my bag. I got out the car without looking back and headed over to her.
“Thanks,” I said offishly before lifting the handle to my suitcase and proceeding to walk to my room.
“No no.” Came Alex’s voice from behind me. “You’re staying upstairs tonight.”
Before I could say anything he took my bag from me and headed upstairs. Down the passage was a large room with a kitchenette, lounge and large balcony area. It was breathtaking. Dark wood and neutral tones, it felt like a room out of a magazine. I walked in and looked around.
The bathroom had a large shower and a tub. Next to that was a closet filled with mens clothes. Suddenly I realised, this is his room.
I turned to see him taking off his uniform shirt and putting on a light grey sweater. I blushed as I caught sight of his naked chest and the dark brown fuzz that coated it.
“This is my room. I can sleep on the couch if you want, although the bed’s big enough to fit us both... without us touching.” He grinned devilishly at me. “But either way, you’re going to stay the night where I can see you.” A smirk crossed his face as he spoke. I wanted to be angry still, I was still angry, but I also felt relieved to be near him again. For us to be talking again.
I took my bag into the bathroom and showered, letting the hot water ease the pain throughout my back and legs. I washed my hair and then dried it with my hair dryer. I looked as tired as I felt so I put a little concealer under my eyes and one coat of mascara to make my eyes pop. As I stood back to look at my reflection I realised what I was doing. The thought of lying next to him had my mind racing. I wanted to look good, I wanted him to want me even though I wouldn’t let anything happen. Wouldn’t hurt I guess, to revel in the attention a little bit.
When I came out the bathroom he was already in bed reading. I left my bag near the desk and headed over to the other side of the bed. I climbed under the covers and lay as close to the edge as possible.
I heard him chuckle.
“Well, good night then,” he said.
“Good night,” I shot back.
Eventually he turned off his reading lamp and settled in. But I was wide awake. The thought of him being so close, his warmth invading my space, it was making my imagination run wild.
I was slowly drifting off when I felt him shift his weight behind me. He leaned over and snaked his arm around my waist and gently pulled me back against his chest. I was so tired and so incredibly comfortable in his embrace I didn’t fight it. Instead, I fell asleep to images of the campfire and full moon again.
_______
I lay on my stomach, propped up by my elbow and stared into his beautiful eyes as he mirrored my pose. He tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear. “You’re beautiful,” he whispered. I blushed and turned my face away but he caught it in his hand. I nuzzled my face into the warmth of his palm as he gently turned my face back to look at him before planting a kiss right on my lips. His lips tasted of rain. They were so warm, so inviting.
What started as innocent quickly tuned passionate. I pushed his shoulders back and swiftly got on top of him, pinning him down with my thighs against his waist. I pulled off my top and then bent back down to plant my lips back on his.
His hands roamed the now exposed skin on my back. He held my waist as he sat upright himself, bringing his face inline with mine. He let go of me to pull his own shirt off. With both of us now topless, I threw my arms around him, hugging him closely against my chest. Our bodies moulded together and the warmth radiated from between us.
Without warning he wrapped one arm around me and used the other to anchor his action as he spun us both back onto the bed. He was now on top of me. My bare back sinking deeply into his bed.
He sat up and stared down at me as his hands moved slowly to the waist of my leggings and in one quick movement pulled both my leggings and panties down to my ankles. Untangling them from my feet, he threw them to the ground and slowly left a trail of kisses from my feet all the way to my core. I arched my back as the sudden sensations coursed through my body. That’s when I woke up.
I quickly sat up, trying to make sense of where I was.
“Are you okay?” Came the sleepy, sultry voice from next to me.
“Yes, sorry. Weird dream.” I threw the blankets off of me and ran to the bathroom.
I splashed my face over and over again with cold water but I couldn’t cool down. The heat was radiating from under my skin. How embarrassing. Was I really just fantasising about him, in bed with him?
When I finally found the nerve to go back to bed he was already asleep again. I climbed in slowly next to him, creating a small wall of pillows between us and let my body slowly drift off.
The next morning I woke up to the sounds of him showering. I took the moment of privacy to quickly change, finally into some of my own clothes, and orientate myself around his room a little more.
He walked out with a towel around his waist and a smaller towel around his shoulders catching the beads of water dripping from his hair.
“How did you sleep?” He asked innocently, not knowing what his naked chest was doing to me.
“Fine thanks,” I said looking away before my face gave away what I was thinking.
He changed inside his walk-in closet and then made us some coffee. We sat in silence on his balcony looking out over the village. For just a minute I entertained the thought that I could get used to this.
After some time he suggested we go down to the dinning hall for breakfast and then head out for a walk around the village. He said it would give us a chance to talk things through.
In the dinning hall Ally and Adam were half way through their breakfast when we walked in.
“How you feeling Teal? Two attacks in one week. I’m sure you’re still in shock? Adam said between mouthfuls.
“I’m alright, this is just, taking a lot of adjusting.” I said sheepishly, staring into my coffee cup.
“I’m sure it has,” said Jay with a wink as he sat down at the table, catching glares from Ally and Alex.
Alex, Adam and Jay got into a deep discussion about the rogues and security for Mabel’s hotel, giving Ally the chance to check how I’m really doing.
“You sure you’re ok? Things aren’t, moving too fast for you?” She said with genuine concern.
“I’m fine. I just really want to get home and think about…everything,” I used my eyes to hint towards Alex.
“You’re still leaving?” She shot back, just low enough to not gain attention from the guys.
“Ally, this isn’t my life or my world, I need to make sense of it all. I can’t just drop it all for someone who’s suddenly my ma… uh, someone I’m really into.” Was it ok to say mate? She seemed shocked at what I was about to say, but surely she knew? Saying it out loud would also mean I’d have to acknowledge that I really feel this way, that this is real. I’m just not ready for that.
Ally was just about to say something when Alex spoke. “Teal, we should head out for that walk now. Jay, you’re in charge while I’m out,” he added jokingly.
“Yes sir!” Jay stated sarcastically, adding a salute.
I gave Ally a small shrug and smile before following Alex outside.
