While Valerian was deep in thought, Mrs. Ellis suddenly reached into her dress pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She then handed it to him with a sigh.
"I was cleaning her room earlier today and found this," she said. "A young man came by yesterday and asked me to give it to Noelle. I did, after you left."
Valerian's fingers tightened around the note as he listened.
"She acted different after that," Mrs. Ellis continued. "Didn't say much, but I could see it in her eyes. What was written in that letter... is the reason why she left."
As Valerian unfolded the paper, he gritted his teeth in anger.
