23. St. Patrick's Day

We were in each other's embrace when my phone buzzed. I ignored it. The coldness of Aurora’s lips and her body were all I needed at the moment. The phone kept buzzing and finally stopped, but then the doorbell rang. I was going to dismiss it as well. “Probably some package they are dropping off instead of the office,” I told Aurora, releasing her precious face. “You should get it,” she told me. Was she trying not to be in my arms? It was almost painful to let go of Aurora, but the door rang relentlessly. I trotted to the door, pulling my pants up along the way. When I opened it, Caleb was standing there with his girlfriend. She looked like her usual tight jeans, and her green top had ample cleavage, leaving nothing to the imagination. However, he wore giant green glasses, an emerald top hat, and a green t-shirt with the smiling leprechaun. The only nongreen thing on him was the jeans. Shit, I forgot we had plans to go to the parade, but I completely spaced it. Nothing wanted to pull me away from Aurora. However, I thought she might not be feel the same lately. She was always with me when I woke up, and I would often inadvertently awaken her when I got home from work, no matter how quietly I opened the door. Despite that, I felt she had been more distant since that one time she told me she loved me and took it away. Aurora was already by my side, staring at Caleb. “So, Jen?” she spoke. “Jennifer,” Caleb’s girlfriend replied, her eyes squinted. They were both vampires, but they seemed not to like each other for whatever reason. I started having a sinking feeling that things would go wrong. “What are you doing here exactly, in the costumes?” Aurora was questioning again. I have never seen that side of her. We were always just us and have not gone on any double dates or parties with her. “You guys are here to go to the parade. I am sorry I completely forgot about it.” I told Caleb and Jennifer. “You forget a lot these days,” Caleb laughed, staring at Aurora. “Are you going to St. Patrick’s day?” Aurora looked at Jennifer, appalled. “Yes, and so are you!” Jennifer replied coolly. The sinking feeling I had intensified was almost painful. “Can I talk to you, just for a minute?” I grabbed her, and we went into my bedroom. “Hey Aurora,” I hugged her, “We always go with Caleb to St. Patrick’s parade. It’s our yearly tradition.” “What about Jennifer?” “They have often been broken up during that time,” I was trying to recall. The memory of my late wife and me and Caleb with his barrage of girls came to mind until the last few years, when he would go with us single and then I was not going for a while. There was no reason to go without her. This time I didn’t even question it, I just agreed to go. I wanted Aurora to have some fun, and we went at night, so it should be safe for her. “Holding me in your hands like that is manipulation,” she seemed to melt well, not wormed up to my charms. I let her go to get something out of my closet. “How can you resist this?” I quickly reached and dug deep into my closet, but my search was quick. I pulled out a green suit covered in lucky clover designs on the hanger. “You are going to wear this?” She laughed. “I will today! But we have a problem!” I was glad to have her back in a much better mood. “What problem?” “What are you going to wear? Maybe we can find something green in my closet?” “No, I am not dressing up for the little man,” she refused, and her eyes glared again. I wanted to ask her why, but Caleb and Jennifer were waiting, so we got back to them. Jennifer ordered us a ride, and it was a limo. Jennifer and Aurora ended up sitting across from each other and actually talking. “I like the ride. It’s good to keep our humans separate,” Aurora told her. “I figured as much,” Jennifer replied. “I have not met you, but I have heard what happened at Silvia's. I heard you were long-time friends. Can’t you go back and talk to her, get the ban lifted?” “I will, someday,” Aurora sighed. “Although I don’t mind that Caleb can’t go to our parties without me while we are not together,” Jennifer giggled. Caleb moved uncomfortably when he heard that. “I will see what I can do,” Aurora replied. She looked at them across the seat as if trying to figure something out. Our ride dropped us at Fifth avenue, where the parade was already in full swing. The street light was bright enough that I could see the parade from a block away, where we got dropped off. There were so many people dressed in all shades of green that the street looked like a meadow swaying with the wind while we walked toward it. The loud music hit us before we even joined the crowd. A few people played the windpipes, violins, and banjos, and some banged hand drums. I loved the sound of the parade. It was a bittersweet reminder of my old life, which was a simple and happy one. I gazed at Aurora. She felt it and looked back at me while we were walking. I squeezed her hand a little more, and she stopped to kiss me. Having her with me by my side made me feel needed. I needed her, and I also knew she needed me, no matter what else was going on in her mind. We paused right in the middle of the crowd while everyone else was moving forward. “Get a room,” I heard the squeaky voice. We looked down, and a child in a green outfit was staring at us, smirking. “Why are you even here?” Aurora spoke to him as to an old annoying relative. “Be nice to the old man!” the child responded. I looked closer, and as the veil fell from my eyes, I realized it was not a kid, but a little old man staring at us. There was something special about him I could not quite figure out. Maybe it was the wild sparkle in his eyes. They were bright green. I wondered if it was contact lenses that made the color so intense. Also, while his face looked wrinkled appropriately for his age, his eyes seemed very young, almost like a child’s. “I see the mark on you,” he told Aurora. “Actually, I see the mark on both of you,” he also pointed to Jennifer. “Shush, I don’t need to hear your fake prophecies,” Aurora growled and lowered herself to the man, showing him her vampire’s teeth. I was worried someone would notice our odd conversation, but people were going around us, like a river flowing around the little island, and no one cared. As Jennifer heard the old man, I saw a shiver run through her body. Caleb was also looking at the little man, mesmerized. “I don’t do prophecies, little bloodsucker,” the old man mumbled. I only tell you what I see, and with that, he swiftly faded into the crowd. “It’s always bad luck meeting leprechauns,” Jennifer told Aurora, who straightened up and hid her fangs, but looked somewhat lost and uncomfortable.
