Chapter 4
I was in the parking lot when I saw Kitty and Reign. Reign looked surprised to see me.
"Babe? I thought you went home already. Are you coming with me?" Reign asked, quickly pulling his arm away from Kitty. I pretended not to notice and said I was heading home.
"But I don't have a car," I said. Kitty made a little "aww" sound and Reign immediately helped her.
"Um... Babe, can we drop Kitty off before we head to your place?" Reign asked, looking at me. I sighed and pretended to be concerned about Kitty.
"No, it's fine. You can take Kitty home. Someone's picking me up," I replied. I noticed them both visibly relax.
Reign said goodbye and said he'd call me later. Kitty hobbled away, holding onto Reign's arm. I rolled my eyes as I watched them walk away.
"I hope you trip and break your ankle," I muttered under my breath. Then, I actually gasped— Kitty did trip and so did Reign! Kitty started crying because she'd sprained her ankle and couldn't stand.
I quickly turned around and walked away. Once I was a little further away, I started laughing. Seriously, good luck with Kitty's performance tomorrow.
The headlights of a black car nearby suddenly flashed. The door opened and Koen got out.
"Ishaan!"
I happily ran towards the car. Koen opened the door for me, and I got in.
"Ishaan! Ishaan!"
I hugged his arm and snuggled close.
"Did you watch my livestream?" I asked excitedly. The car started moving.
"If you'd contacted my secretary, you could have found a better location," Ishaan said. I pulled back slightly and told him the perfume had sold out.
"The perfume's first release was a success. Besides, it was just a livestream; it won't have much impact on your company's sales," I said, a little disappointed. I'd expected Ishaan to be proud of me. I'd changed the script, sang, and used the restaurant where we'd had our first date as the location.
Although, honestly, there aren't any good memories there. Ishaan also had no idea I could sing or play the piano.
"Young Master, your performance was amazing. A lot of people recommended you as a model and to advertise the perfume again for the company," Koen said. I was surprised and asked if it was true.
"Yes, actually, we have a contract prepared for you, and—"
"Sullivan, I think you're tired of living. Want to lose your tongue?" Ishaan interrupted. Koen shut his mouth and I looked at Ishaan.
"Why did you stop him? I wanted to hear about the contract," I said. Ishaan looked at me.
"I thought you didn't want any support from Axelrod? Axelrod is my company," Ishaan reminded me. I paused, remembering a scenario where Ishaan offered me a contract and I tore it up.
He'd given me 20% of the product he wanted me to do a commercial for because there'd been an accident and no company wanted to work with me. I'd gotten angry and said I'd never accept anything from Ishaan.
And in the end, it was Ishaan who'd fixed that mess behind the scenes, getting me back into showbiz.
I played with my fingers and whispered that he was being unreasonable.
"I'm your husband. All my clothes and accessories are from your money, my bank accounts are funded by you. This car we're in is yours, too," I whispered. I reminded him that the perfume I'd promoted on the livestream was from his company.
I heard Koen cough from the driver's seat.
"I'm interested in working for your company. Show me the contract," I said, hugging Ishaan's arm. Of course, I added a little bit of a pitiful, cute act.
"Whatever," Ishaan said, trying to remove my arm, but I wouldn't let go.
When we arrived at the mansion, I was exhausted and collapsed onto the sofa. I took off my shoes and threw myself down.
"Don't stay here. Go take a shower," Ishaan said, sitting on the sofa at my feet. I happily lay down properly and put my feet on his lap.
He looked at me. I smiled sweetly and grabbed some grapes from the table.
"I'm too tired to go upstairs. I was exhausted from rehearsal earlier," I said. Then I started telling him about the livestream.
"I watched Yexian's practice earlier. She's an amazing dancer, so many—" I stopped, realizing I'd said too much, and Ishaan was just quiet.
I looked at him and paused when I saw him staring at me.
"Why did you stop? So many what?" Ishaan asked. I sat up and hugged my knees. I was facing him, looking at him.
I'd avoided Ishaan before because he had nothing but good looks and money. He was indifferent to everything, always angry with me and always pushing for what he wanted.
In all our years together, had I ever tried to approach him? To talk to him about something other than Reign, to open up?
I leaned against my knees and stared at him. Ishaan frowned.
"Ishaan Axelrod, have I ever told you how handsome you are?" I asked. Ishaan paused and looked away.
"Stop talking nonsense. If you're done, go to your room. I'll prepare dinner."
I was wowed and stood up. I asked him what he was making.
"What do you want to eat?"
After Hael went upstairs, Ishaan went to the kitchen and grabbed an apron.
"Sir Axelrod, is it possible for a person to change overnight?" Koen asked, following Ishaan into the kitchen to report.
"Did Hael just revert to the original Hael?" Ishaan muttered. Koen looked at Ishaan, who was now cutting meat.
"If you're done reporting, help me wash these vegetables."
"Ishaan! Ishaan!"
Ishaan and Koen, who was washing vegetables, looked up. Koen quickly turned his back when he saw Hael wearing only a large t-shirt, looking like he'd just showered.
Ishaan looked at Koen's back.
"Sir, I didn't see anything," Koen said nervously. He didn't want to lose his job.
"Ishaan, I found this in our room. Are you going to my mom's birthday?" Hael asked, showing him an invitation. Ishaan stopped and put down his knife.
Ishaan never missed an event, especially his in-laws' birthdays, which were Hael's parents' birthdays. Even though their relationship wasn't good, Ishaan always maintained contact with the Morrellis. He always made time to visit his in-laws, which is why Hael was even angrier because his parents always sided with Ishaan, until Hael cut off contact with them.
"Are you planning to go?" Ishaan asked. Hael put down the invitation and slowly nodded.
"Can I tag along?" Hael whispered. Ishaan said they were going to his parents' birthday.
"Why are you asking?" Ishaan asked, continuing what he was doing.
"My dad was hospitalized because of me. Will they be happy to see me?" Hael asked.
"Absolutely not. You chose Reign over them," Ishaan replied. Hael pouted, saying he needed comfort from Ishaan, not facts.
Ishaan put milk and a cupcake on the table for Hael. Hael happily sat down and picked up the glass of milk.
The next day,
"If you want the male lead role, just give me a month to convince the director," Seana said. I laughed at the idea. Just last month, Seana had been frowning whenever I asked her to get me the male lead role, even though I wasn't right for the character.
"It's fine, at least I got this role using my own talent, right?" I said, showing Seana the script. Anyway, in this drama, I'm just a supporting character and the role isn't that difficult.
I saw Seana smile. I heard Reign's voice, so I turned around.
"You auditioned, too. Thanks for this," Reign said, showing me his script. He'd gotten the male lead—as expected, thanks to Ishaan's investors and sponsors. He could get any role as long as he interested Reign.
Reign, enjoy your privileges as my canary, because your days are numbered. Just wait until I fix my relationship with Ishaan and my family, and everything you're enjoying now will be gone.
A car stopped, and the door opened. Yexian got out and immediately put her arm around me.
"Baby! Have you been waiting long?" Yexian asked. I saw Reign staring at Yexian. How could I not have noticed Reign's strange look at Yexian since the first time he saw her? This scumbag—I stepped in front of Yexian.
"You go ahead to the car. I'll be right there," I said, smiling. Yexian nodded and got back into the car without looking at Reign.
"Aren't you coming with me?" Reign asked. I shyly turned around and apologized, saying Yexian and I had somewhere to go.
Reign took my hand and said to call him if I needed anything. I smiled and nodded.
Reign turned and walked towards his car.
"Manager, you take care of us," I said, turning to Seana. Seana looked surprised but didn't ask any questions.
When we arrived at the club and our reserved room, everyone was already there; only Yexian and I were missing. Kitty was there too, looking disgusted when she saw me and Yexian.
Yexian got the female lead role that Kitty wanted. Kitty was also a main lead, but she was the antagonist.
Our seats were arranged according to our roles. Naturally, Yexian and Reign were sitting together.
This is where my jealousy of Yexian would start, but this time—it wasn't jealousy I felt, but worry.
While drinking, I kept staring at Yexian, who was right in front of me. The singing and drinking started.
I expected nothing bad to happen to Yexian if I didn't make a move, but I was wrong. Kitty caused trouble and started fighting with Yexian when Reign showed interest in Yexian.
"What are you doing, Kitty? What's wrong with being close to Yexian? Isn't it natural for me to approach her so we're not uncomfortable with each other when the drama starts?" Reign asked, trying to stop Kitty, who was already drunk. That was the exact line Reign had said to me when I'd gotten angry out of jealousy.
"Yexi? Are you okay?" I asked. I went to Yexian, who was wiping herself off. Kitty had poured alcohol on Yexian without her knowing.
"I'll go with you to the restroom," I said, taking Yexian out of the room. Yexian seemed a little drunk because her responses were slow, so I supported her as we walked.
"Do you have a spare outfit?" I asked. Yexian said she had one in her car.
"I'll get it," Yexian said, but I stopped her.
"I'll get it. Stay here," I told her. She refused, but I insisted.
"You're drunk. I'll get it," I said. I didn't want to take any risks, especially regarding Yexian's safety. I would go to the parking lot and get Yexian's spare dress.
At least I could defend myself somewhat if someone attacked me. Yexian agreed and thanked me.
I went to the parking lot and looked for Yexian's car. I found it quickly and opened the compartment to get Yexian's clothes.
After closing the compartment door, I looked around, listening... I sighed when I realized I was alone.
"I think something's changed in the future," I whispered. I walked back to the club and went to the women's restroom.
"Hello, is anyone in there?" I asked the woman coming out of the restroom. She said no one was inside.
I was surprised and peeked inside. All the doors were open, and no one was there.
I grabbed my phone and tried to contact Yexian. I cursed when I heard Yexian's ringtone coming from inside the restroom.
I went inside, and there was Yexian's phone under the sink. I bent down and picked it up.
"Yexi..."
I dropped the paper bag. My heart pounded and fear washed over me.
