She hadn’t taken long and was grateful for the clothes Lucian picked out for her. They fit perfectly. It was simple too. Just a plain white shirt, a pair of slim fit skinny jeans that were black, along with black ankle boots. He even had a leather jacket to coordinate with it all.
They were just perfect. She knew she would have to thank him for this.
Once ready she headed out with Thomas and before she knew it they were already there.
Striding in behind Thomas, Evie felt nervous. Meeting people was not something she had any practice in. The only time she had reached out to people was with Julius, Thomas and Erik when they first met one another. That was the first and only time.
Otherwise, Elizabeth had ensured she barely had any interaction with other people as little as possible.
The worrisome part that seemed to engulf her was she knew them already. Had seen them all before, but had to be careful not to mention anything of the sort to them. They couldn’t know her abilities. She’d have to be extra aware of her words, unlike when she was with Julius or Thomas.
Once they walked into the office Thomas’s status made everyone turn to look over to him.
“Well, if it isn’t boss man gracing us with his wonderful presence again. Took you long enough.” This was Derek. She knew that he was the goofball of the bunch. He was also known to be the player of the bunch too. From what she could see it made sense. He had an undercut hairstyle with the top dark brown hair long which worked for his strong jaw line. He had golden eyes with a tint of green in them. When his eyes drifted over to Evie she saw his eyes light up. “Oh, and who do you have with you?”
Derek got out of his chair to come over to greet her properly. Offering his hand out she reached out to shake his. “Name’s Derek and you are?”
Thomas gave a disapproving look to the man with a sharp glare. “Don’t even think about it Derek.” Once he let go of her hand Thomas addressed the room. “This here is Evie. She will be assigned to our section of the enforcement of supernaturals. Right now, she is a trainee who will be observing what we do and helping on small assignments for now until she is caught up to speed. Please ensure to treat her well as she is newly turned.”
“Hello everyone. It’s very nice to meet you all.” She smiled towards everyone unsure what else to say.
This time another person spoke up. “Welcome, I’m Claire. I can tell you’re not from around here.”
“No, I’m from Europe. This is my first time in the states.” She knew Claire would take notice first. She was the best at catching slight differences and clues in things. This was one of the reasons she was part of this team. The girl was just a few inches shorter than her height of five foot five. She had short crimson pixie hair that fit her cute face. She had vibrant emerald eyes and dressed very similar to herself.
Again, another reason to thank Julius. At least she seemed to fit in with the dress code.
A cheeky smile appeared on her face. “Well, your English is really good. Was hard to notice. I’m just good with these things. It’s awesome to have you join. It’s going to be nice to have another vampire girl on the team. Can she sit next to me Thomas? I can help show her the ropes of the place.”
Thomas didn’t look too pleased with such, but Evie wanted this. She had known that Claire would be someone she could easily get along with and was one to be fiercely protective of her friends.
Thankfully, he nodded. “Yes, that might be a good idea. You would be the best one to actually help her. If you want to get her set up that would work perfectly. We won’t be staying too long. Just have to see Erik for a few and then we have to take off to take care of some errands we have to run.”
“So, Thomas is she your girl or something? Is that why you won’t let me talk to the beautiful Evie?” At that comment Thomas sighed deeply already appearing annoyed.
With a shake of her head, she couldn’t help but smile. “No, he has been tasked with helping me. I’m under Julius’s protection and part of his clan. Thomas is just being a gracious host.” Evie hoped that all made sense and kept everything still under wraps.
“Though, trust me Derek on this one. You can’t have her understood?” Thomas pointed him with a look that read don’t even think about it.
There was challenge in the air and then it disappeared as soon as a door opened into the room and there stood Erik.
Once her eyes met his she could sense the flare of anger that emerged into the room. She wasn’t the only one either. Everyone seemed to sense it as they all moved back to their desks and quieted down. Even Derek knew better and began to work again.
“Perfect. Just the person I needed to speak to. Erik can we talk in my office. Evie, if you want to go wait out in the car I will be right out.” Without a second more, Thomas grabs Erik to pull him towards his office to avoid anyone overhearing.
All she could do was listen to Thomas for the time being as she decided to follow his advice and head back to the car, but was stopped short by Claire. “Why don’t I head out with you. I have to go check out something and figured it might be fun to continue to chat with you.”
Evie could tell that the female was curious about the interaction between Erik and her. She really couldn’t fault her either. Either way, at least she would have someone to talk with for just a short while until Thomas finished with Erik.
“Okay.”
As soon as they were out of the office with the door shutting behind them did the interrogation begin. “So, what’s up with Erik? Some hostility when he looked at you.”
Now what to say to not lie and yet not reveal their history together.
“We had an encounter last night that left with him very upset.”
Short and to the point but she wondered if Claire would be fine with that. “Well, that makes sense, though I have never seen him that angry before.” The sideways look to her made Evie sigh. She would have to reap what she sowed. She knew he wouldn’t be happy and never would be most likely with her.
“Yes, it was pretty bad.” He truly was upset at having seen her again after so long and again she knew she deserved it.
Claire shrugged. “Regardless, it will be nice to have someone else here, even if you are in training. Any help is grand to have with the paperwork and little things. We haven’t had a new person in a while.”
Thankfully the hallway was short and they took the elevator down to the main floor while they were talking. She was truly thankful that Claire at least stopped digging about Erik. She could feel the curiosity still there but was glad she decided on change of topic instead.
“Thank you.” Evie glanced towards Claire.
“For walking you to your car?”
“That and for just not pushing at things. I appreciate it.” She had only ever met a few people in her life, and it had been decades since she had interacted with anyone besides her late sire.
“I figure we don’t know one another very well so you’ll open up when you are ready. I’m not saying I’m not curious out of my mind, but I can wait. I wouldn’t want someone interrogating me constantly after just first meeting them. But I hope you can trust me one day. For some reason I just know I’m going to like you very much.” Claire smiled at her as they walked together towards the exit and to the parking lot.
From what she had seen there was no doubt in her mind. “And I think I’m going to like you as well very much.” Giving her a smile, she headed towards Thomas’s car. “It was a pleasure meeting you Claire. I’ll see you later.”
Giving a wave and smile over her shoulder Claire kept walking towards a black SUV. “Yup. See you tomorrow, Evie.”
Arriving at the car she took the extra key Thomas handed her out of her pocket to get into the car to wait. Turning the car’s engine on she turned the AC on and sat back to wait thinking about everything once again.
It was a whirlwind these last few days.
She still couldn’t believe that just four days ago that she was still imprisoned in that forsaken room of Elizabeth’s.
Then all of a sudden, the visions started to assault her mind without warning. They were just different people doing day-to-day things in different settings, nothing noteworthy. They just kept coming and going, unable to allow her out of them. They seemed to pull her in further and further she began to worry.
Then a slam of the car door actually broke her out of the trance thankfully.
“Sorry for making you wait half an hour Evie. I had to get Erik to calm down and then needed to get caught up on what was in the horizon.”
She worried that maybe Thomas had seen her stuck in her vision, but at his words she knew he hadn’t. That made her feel relief as to cause him less problems. “Were you able to get him to calm down?”
Thomas sighed. “It took some time and a call to Julius to help, but he will be fine. He just needs some time.”
“I feel like I should just stay in Julius’s villa instead. I don’t have to be out and about. I’ve stayed in one room a long enough time and a bit longer wouldn’t be a problem. It would cause less trouble for everyone. I don’t want to wreck your friendship, Thomas.” She really worried about hurting that. They were such great friends and this was causing a rift.
Thomas stared right at her without blinking an eye. “No. You’re not going to be locked in room again. You’ll stay with me as we have planned. Erik will get over it. You’re important to me too, Evie. Erik and I will be fine. We’ve been through enough that I know he won’t stay angry at me forever.” Putting the car in drive the vehicle launched forward heading towards traffic. “Now let’s get some shopping done.”
His words put her at ease some as she smiled, but worry still clawed at her.
