An unintentional scream escaped my lips as I covered head with my arms to protect it from the incoming impact in my way.
I waited for the extended claws to rip through my flesh or the pain from the canines tear through my skin but nothing came. The sound of a balloon rubbing against glass was what came instead making me to open my eyes and find a golden, patterned light between me and the naked attacker. The light worked like a shield, holding the assaulter back as I saw the anger and hatred in those glowing yellow eyes.
The expanded and threw the feral guy away back into the forest.
I reflectively looked back at the TWPs to find West doing some bizzare movements with his hands and the light shield dancing accordingly.
Kai and Orwell, engaged in a hand to hand combat with the other two naked guys while West was left with the rest two of them.
"Run, Priestley. I can't keep saving you," Zervos hissed in his accented voice pushing the two of them back with his shield and I swear I could hear the sounds of the fallen one in the forest who was closing up on me again.
And I knew that he was being dead serious about it.
I mustered my courage again and I crawled before getting on my feet and making a run again in random direction.
I tripped and fell but not once did I look over my shoulder again, afraid that one of them was still on my trail, ready to rip my face off like an animal.
The scratches on my exposed skin from all the twigs and bushes, the bleeding knees, splintered hands or the leaves in my hair that had pulled out a few strands of my hair by getting stuck on the low hanging branches was none of my concern. I couldn't feel any of them to make me slow down.
I don't know if I was just paranoid or if there really was someone still chasing after me for I was still hearing the sounds of the footsteps behind me.
I don't know how far I ran or for how long. Everything looked like a slow motion filter had been enabled, dragging the time so long that it was hard to make out how much time had passed by.
I stumbled into the clearing, still quite far away from the civilization and the worst fears of mine had come true. There was still one of the inhumane naked being chasing after me who had now sent a rock hurling my way, once his location was exposed in the open. I skidded over the lose soil, dodging the rock which was the size of my head by an inch. And that scared the s**t out of me.
The side of my shoulder grazed over the stone, leaving an angry gash making me hiss in pain. I struggled back on my feet while the assaulter closed the distance.
Why in the hell were they even after me? I don't remember kissing his girlfriend and saying sorry, for him to try and kill me only to say very sorry.
Without Vann or West and his group, the hope to survive through this was diminishing. Whatever they were, at least they stood a chance against these creatures. Me on the other hand, finally understood that being an ordinary human was not a child's play. First I had to deal with highschool but now I had to deal with this too.
I crawled and tripped and crawled again before finally getting back on my feet as I ran into the woods ahead.
My body was exhausted, the adrenaline rush had emptied itself. I was hungrily gulping air through my mouth, trying to keep my lungs working and not give up on me. I bet I could beat a dog if we were in a competition for panting. The burning in my throat and chest accounted to this.
My trembling hand reached out to touch the nearest tree to get a hold of reality and not another nightmare. I pushed my crumbling body away from the tree with enough force to help my now jelly legs. The only thing that kept me going was my life being at stake, otherwise I would have crashed on the floor a long time ago.
"I must keep going," I repeated to myself, for my life, I couldn't give up now.
With the new determination, I looked ahead for a possible path of security. That was when the air before me condensed, like it was crumpled like a sheet of paper with folds and creases. Kind of a rupture in the space. I stopped feeling the energy emitting through it, not have enough courage to go through. I looked over my shoulder to see if it was the doing of my assaulter but he was still far behind for me to actually comprehend what was happening.
The grabbing of my arm, captured my attention and right there stood an elderly man in his late forties wearing a wrinkled suit, only the shirt and pant part though, since he was holding the coat in his other hand.
The features were princely, with him being tall and good physique. For someone in his forties, he sure was a good looking person. Perhaps my mother would have also had a crush on him if she ran into him in a shopping complex, and note when I tell you that my dad wasn't someone to be ignored in the looks department who had made my mother blind to the world of handsome men because of that.
He rather looked at me with poker face for a second before surprise etched his features as he mumbled in his deep baritone, "femme fatale."
The term wasn't new to me, which meant an attractive or seductive women but something about the way he said it, the gravity to it made a chill pass down my spine and goosebumps raise on my skin. Or was it his deep voice that made me shiver?
From the corner of my eyes, I found the assaulter skidding to a stop upon looking at my company.
And the next thing I know was me being pushed into the rupture as the thunder clapped in my ears before rendering everything to silence. I was on all four of my limbs, trying to stabilize the swirling of my head and my stomach churned as nausea took over.
Without a care or thought, I turned on my left and emptied the contents of my stomach. The strong pungent smell made me want to go for a round two but with nothing left to empty, only air flooded out.
Without the sense of sound, it took a moment to realise what was happening. The surroundings looked eerily family as a car zoomed passed noiselessly over the paved road.
Oh god, how much did I just want to fall back and get over with my misery but the chirping of birds slowly coming back to me gave me enough will to gather my strength and stand up back on my feet. I staggered towards the road and around the bush just to end up coming face to face with the one person I would have prayed not to face at this very moment.
Standing by the car parked before the very familiar house, was the one woman I was hoping hadn't seen me, who was holding a bag of groceries while slamming the trunk shut only to drop those groceries at my sight.
"Oh my goodness, what in the earth happened to you?" She exclaimed quite horrified.
And who wouldn't by seeing a girl that looked like she came out of a war and puke stains and dirty like a jungle hobo? Especially, when it's someone who you carried inside of you for nine months...
"Mom, I can explain," I raised my arms to stop her panic but the joke was on me because I had nothing that I could use to explain this condition of mine without sounding crazy!
