Dylan
I scrubbed a hand over my face before checking my watch. I had about thirty minutes left before lunch. Sighing I went back to looking at the documents on the table in front of me, but the words swam on the page. I was running on four hours of sleep and had been at the office since six this morning. I could have taken my lunch already but Meg didn’t go on lunch until one, and I wanted to spend some time with her today since she would be at Blue Moon Hospital for the next two days, and we would barely see each other.
A knock on the conference room door pulled me from my thoughts. A young woman with curly brown hair walked in. “Hi are you Dylan Ohmsford?”
“Yes?” I said cautiously. “Can I help you?”
“Hi.” Relief flooded her eyes. “My name is Abigail Krossans, and I was told to come find you, I’m your new assistant.”
“I think you must be mistaken, I don’t have an assistant.” I told her.
“You do now.” Mr. Stanston said from behind the girl. “This is a big case, and she is an intern. Let her help you.”
“Yes sir.” I nodded partially relieved and partially pissed that he thought I couldn’t do this on my own.
Mr. Stanston left us alone and the girl took a seat across from me. “How can I help you?”
I handed her a stack of folders. “I need all dates from the year of 2015 highlighted.” She nodded and got to work. The next thirty minutes flew by in comfortable silence, and I decided that I wouldn’t mind working with this girl. The alarm on my phone went off, and I sat back in my chair. Abigail looked at me with a raised eyebrow. “I’m going on lunch.” I told her.
“Alright.” She nodded and focused back on her assignment.
“Abigail you should take your lunch to.” I told her.
“I’m okay.” She responded. “Would you like me to go through all of these while you are gone?”
“Uh- sure.” I agreed. “I will only be gone for forty-five minutes.”
“Enjoy your lunch.” She smiled.
I stood and looked at her for a moment before I shrugged and teleported to the Blue Moon Packhouse. One of the Omegas yelped when I appeared in the kitchen. The hospital was a ten-minute walk from the packhouse. I could have teleported straight to the hospital, but there are humans there who don’t know about the supernatural. We are very cautious when we know that there are humans nearby. At night the hospital is staffed by supernaturals only so that we as wolves can run around freely, and thanks to Macy we have a cloaking spell over the pack grounds in case of an emergency, which will wipe the memories of any humans that see something they shouldn’t.
Speaking of Macy, she stood in front of me, hands on her hips and a scowl on her face. “Dylan Ohmsford what have I told you about scaring the omegas.”
I flinched. Everyone here knew what I was, but when I teleport my aura comes out. It’s stronger than even Ethan’s and he hates that we out rank him. I stepped down from the Gamma position about a year after Justin died. “Sorry Macy, I wasn’t thinking.”
“You’re right, you weren’t thinking.” She snapped.
“Where is Ethan?” I asked trying to change the subject.
Macy rolled her eyes. “He’s at the office.”
“Cool.” I nodded. “Well see ya!” I darted out of there as quickly as I could so that she couldn’t lecture me again. The normally ten minute walk only took me about five with have fast I was moving and soon I was walking through the doors of the hospital. It took me a few minutes, but soon I located Meg on the third floor, standing at one of the desks. Her nose buried in her chart. I chuckled internally at how cute she looked, Not that I would tell her that because she would have my balls. She looked up as I made my way to her.
“Hey babe.” She smiled.
“Hey gorgeous.” I said as I kissed her cheek. “Are you free for lunch?”
“I am.” She giggled. “Give me like five minutes.”
I nodded and moved to stand next to the wall.
“Oh my god.” I looked up to see a girl staring at me. A quick sniff of the air told me she was human. “Who is that?”
“That would be Meg’s husband.” Melissa snorted.
“That’s your husband?” The girl gasped.
“Damn he’s hot.” Another woman said.
“Yup that’s my husband.” I couldn’t contain my smile.
“I heard the Ohmsford brothers were built like gods.” One of the male residents laughed. “I just never thought I would see one in person.”
“He’s here to join me for lunch.” She told them. “Speaking of which, I will see you guys in a bit.”
They bid her goodbye and I escorted her out of the building. We caught up during lunch. The waitress made it clear that she wasn’t my biggest fan, but for what reason I don’t know. She reminded me of the upcoming parent teacher conferences. Which to be honest I had forgotten all about. When Meg excused herself to go to the bathroom, Jackson perked up as we watched the waitress follow her in that direction.
The waitress came back a few minutes later, and then brought our food while giving me the stink eye. Meg wasn’t back yet so I folded my hands in front of me to wait for her. I have a rule that I will not eat until my mate is seated as well. We have never stopped the kids from eating, but as the boys have gotten older they have followed my example, and all except for Tasha, none of us will eat until Meg is seated. Of course there are days that she isn’t home for meals, and we eat without her, but I hold firm in my decision to wait.
When Meg returns I notice the kitchen staff is watching us. “Why are they staring at us?” I ask.
“I don’t know.” Meg shrugged.
When we were done eating I walked her back to the hospital, and after I kissed her goodbye I made my way back to the packhouse and into the forest. I know I told Abigail that I would be back in forty-five minutes, but Jackson was insisting on a quick run before I returned to work, and for once I chose to cave in to his demands. I summoned my power around me in order to shift with my clothes still intact, but just as I relaxed enough for the shift to happen, something sharp smacked me in the back of the head.
I hit the ground, and my vision blurred. I felt the sting of a needle in my neck and everything went dark. Then next time I opened my eyes I was strapped to a metal chair. Niky and Justin were on either side of me, both still unconscious.
“Interesting.” A voice said from behind me, and the blood in my veins turned to ice. I knew that voice. “I would have thought it’d be your brother who woke first.”
“Bastian.” I snarled.
He moved to stand in front of me as Niky and Justin began waking up. “Hello Dylan we meet again.”
“What the hell?” Niky screeched and I winced.
“Let us go!” Justin snarled.
“Not yet.” Bastian raised a finger as if asking for silence. “Not until I am done with you.”
“What the hell do you want from us?” I asked.
“I want to know how you three tick.” Bastian said plainly. “I know for a fact that Justin died two years ago, yet here he is.”
“Yeah well I’m back.” Justin growled while struggling against his restraints.
“Yes I can see that.” Bastian snapped before schooling his face. “Are you aware that I can’t kill you?”
“Bullshit.” Niky snapped. “Justin’s death is proof that you’re lying.”
“No.” Bastian smirked at her. “I didn’t kill him, I just ordered the hit, but if I were to kill you right now-“ He trailed off for a moment. “I would die too, and vice versa.”
“Why are you telling us this?” I asked.
“I am aware that my sister gave you all nine lives. She always did have a weird sense of humor.” Bastian replied. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t experiment on you. I need to know why I can’t kill you.”
I looked at Justin, but he shrugged. “What do you mean experiment?”
“I wondered if there is a way to flip you to the dark side.” Bastian grinned. “I have been doing research and according to what I have found, if I kill your soul with a demon blade before it can return to your body, it will infect you, and slowly you will become demonic.”
I shuddered at the thought. “Won’t that kill us though?”
“No!” Bastian snapped. “There’s a whole ritual, but before I can do that I need to know what works on you and what doesn’t.”
He waved his hand and three demons stepped out of the shadows holding syringes. “I would say you won’t feel a thing, but I am oh so hoping that you do.”
I recognized the solution in the syringe and began struggling in my chair. Liquid silver. This was gonna hurt like a b***h. The demon plunged the needle into my arm, and the burn started immediately. A yell tore from my lips as I felt the silver enter my blood stream. I could hear Niky and Justin’s screams of pain as well. My heart and lungs felt as if they were on fire, and for the second time today the world went dark.
