Justin
I walked into the precinct and was greeted by Alex, my partner. Apparently after I died he refused to have a new partner. “Morning Alex.” I greeted.
“Morning.” He grunted.
“You look like shit.” I laughed.
“Says the man who came back from the dead.” Alex snorted.
I laughed. “So, is it another boring day?”
“I don’t know, they haven’t had the meeting yet. Robert wanted to wait for you.” Alex shrugged.
“Speaking of which.” Maya interrupted suddenly, and I jumped. “He just called it.”
“What are you doing here?” I raised an eyebrow at her.
“Jen and I moved to Nahonia.” She grinned at me.
“Why?”
“Our best friend came back from the dead, don’t be surprised if suddenly we are all living in Nahonia.” Alex laughed.
“Yes, I heard that Macy and Ethan are looking for a place to live near the castle.” Maya nodded.
“Oh.” I shook my head. The three of us headed to the conference room, and I was greeted by several of my co-workers. Officer Lisa Garner saw me and ducked her head. I walked up and tapped her on the shoulder, and when she looked at me I could see the tears in her eyes. This was the first time I had seen her since coming back, and I was glad that she hadn’t quit. “Hey Lisa.” I smiled.
“Your majesty.” She bowed her head.
“Please don’t call me that. I am not King yet.” I laughed and she gave me a shaky smile. At this point everyone was staring at us. “Lisa I know you blame yourself for what happened, but I want to tell you that it’s not your fault.”
“Of course it is.” She snapped. “I shouldn’t have taken your vest.”
“No Lisa.” I said calmly, and I raised my voice so everyone could hear me. “I was the intended target. No matter where I got shot I would have died.”
“What?” Alex yelled.
“Bastian.” I said simply.
“Who’s Bastian?” A young officer I didn’t know asked. I looked him over. He was in his early twenties, brown hair, and green eyes. One sniff told me he was a wolf.
“Bastian is a demon.” I shrugged. “It’s difficult to explain, but basically he’s been trying to kill my mate, my brother, and me for the last twelve years.”
“Why?” The officer asked.
“I’m sorry.” I narrowed my eyes at him. Arrow growled. “I didn’t catch your name.”
“I’m sorry sir.” The man shuddered. “My name is Nathan Hansen. I just started here last year.”
“Hmm.” I nodded and looked at Robert. Robert’s eyes were wide with fear. I looked at Alex who pointed to the mirror and when I looked I yelped in shock. My wings, fangs, and ears were out. “s**t!” I snarled and rolled my shoulders back, my wings disappeared, and I willed myself to calm down. Once everything was normal again, I turned to look at Officer Hansen. “That’s why.” I growled.
“What the f**k man?” Alex snapped. “You can’t just beast out whenever you feel like it.”
“I didn’t mean to.” I snapped. I felt my fangs elongate again. “Can we move on?”
“Yes, it’s time for your assignments.” Robert gulped and fought to relax. I know my other form is terrifying and I would have to apologize later. Robert read of the assignments, and when he got to me and Alex, he paused. “Justin, Alex, and Maya.” We looked at each other. “I have a special case for you. Everyone else is dismissed.”
Once the room cleared I focused on Robert. “What is going on?”
“We have a murder case.” Robert sighed.
“What?” Maya gasped. “In Nahonia?”
“Yes.” Robert laid out some files and I bristled when I saw the pictures of the victims. Robert shot me an apologetic look. All five girls looked very similar to my mate.
“Is it just me, or do these girls look like-“ Alex trailed off.
“Yes.” Robert sighed. “Justin and Alex you two are my best. Maya you are new to our precinct, but you know these two. Try and solve this quickly if word gets back to Queen Claire-“ No words were needed. “One more thing.”
He placed another file in front of us. This girl looked exactly like Niky, and my heart sped up, “It’s not her.” I whispered.
“You’re right.” Robert agreed. “This one was found this morning. I need you three to go check out the crime scene.”
We nodded, and when he dismissed us we grabbed the files and headed out. “This is freaky.” Maya sighed. “Who would do this. This is obviously a threat to Niky.”
“Bastian.” I snarled. “He must know I am alive.”
It didn’t take us long to get to the crime scene. The scene was cordoned off, and when we flashed our badges the officers on duty ushered us through. The poor girl was zip tied to the fence. Her throat ripped out, and her skin ashened with blood loss. The coroner was taking pictures when we walked up.
“What do we have?” I asked.
“We ID’d her as Samantha Carsons, age twenty-four.” The coroner said grimly. “It appears that she died around four this morning.”
“Was she tied up before or after?” Maya asked.
“After.”
I nodded. “Anything else.”
“Yes.” The man handed me an evidence bag. Inside was a note. It was obviously written in blood.
“What is it?” Alex looked over my shoulder.
The note read. “We’ve got your girl. Your next.” I snarled. “Split up and look for anything in the surrounding areas.”
“What’s going on?” Maya asked, and I handed her the note.
“We need to see if the person who did this left any evidence behind.” I told them. The other two nodded.
“Be careful Justin.” Maya touched my hand. “ I know we are in a safe area, but heed that warning.”
“I will.” I agreed. The three of us split off. I wandered further down the alley way. It was a dead end. I sighed and went to turn around, when I heard someone scream my name.
“Justin run.” The scream came again, this time I looked up, There on the roof of the building was my mate, and she was being held at knife point by a demon. “Justin!” She screamed again and my instincts kicked in. I shifted into my other form and launched into the air. I heard Alex scream my name, but I ignored him.
My radio went off. “Justin come back.” Alex’s voice rang through.
“What do you mean Justin come back?” Robert’s voice came through next.
“Demon on a roof near the crime scene appears to have a woman who looks like Niky.” Maya replied. “Justin went after them.”
At this point I was staring at the demon who had his head tilted at my radio. Niky struggled in his arms, but she appeared to be bound by magical chains. “Aren’t you going to answer them.” The demon smirked. He pushed the blade into Niky’s throat. A scream tore from her throat as a small drop of blood fell. “Answer them.”
I slowly grabbed my radio. “This is Justin.”
“Justin thank god come back.” Alex snapped.
“I can’t he’s got Niky.” I snarled. “I could use back up.”
“No one can save you.” The demon chuckled. Niky’s eyes widened, and she opened her mouth to scream, but pain lanced through my head. I hit the ground with a groan. “Nighty night Trybrid scum.” Someone said and then the world turned black.
