Chapter 8: Promotion

Dylan Everyone gathered in the sitting room. Justin’s kids crowded around him, and Niky clung to him like she was scared he would disappear. Maybe he would. Meg sat next to me, with my kids sitting on the floor. Macy was staring at Justin with slitted eyes, and I could see the whisper of magic around her. “So are you back?” Meg asked. “Like really back?” Justin shrugged. “I guess.” “You guess?” Macy quirked an eyebrow. “I mean Jaden led me back to Ambrielle’s office, and then he wished me luck, and I was back at the hospital.” Justin locked eyes with me. “Mhm,” Macy nodded. “He’s telling the truth about who he is.” Justin laughed loudly, and my Mom jumped. “Sorry.” He grinned sheepishly at her. “Volume control is something I will have to relearn.” Niky snorted. “I’m pretty sure there are plenty of things you will need to relearn.” “Yeah.” I laughed. “Like everything.” “Not everything.” Justin smirked at his mate, and she blushed. “Ew Dad.” Hannah made a face. “You just got back.” Mason laughed. “It’s been two years.” Justin growled playfully. “Don’t judge me.” I tuned out the conversation as my phone went off. It was my boss. Last year I was hired on at the Nahonia Prosecutions Office. I stood up and answered the phone. “Dylan.” “Dylan it’s Martha.” A female voice replied. Martha was D.A Harrison Stanston’s secretary. She was a sweet older woman that had worked for the D.A for twenty years. “Hey Martha what’s up?” “Harrison wants to see you in his office as soon as possible.” She told me, and I tried not to panic. “Am I in trouble?” I gulped. “No dear of course not.” I heard her sigh through the phone, and I felt an increase in fear. “I will be there as soon as I can.” I told her. “I just have to wrap up a family thing.” “Oh dear! Is everything alright?” Martha asked. “I can tell Harrison that you are unavailable.” “No!” I said quickly. “Everything is fine. Meg pulled through, I just got her home actually.” “Oh good.” Martha’s breath of relief reached my ears. “Give me twenty minutes and I will be there.” I assured her. I hung up and saw my brother staring at me. “I’m sorry that was work.” “You have to go?” Meg whimpered. “Yeah.” I kiss her softly. “Mr. Stanston wants to see me. Sorry to cut our reunion short.” I tell Justin. “All good man.” Justin shrugs. “I need to catch up with my family.” I nodded. “I’ll be back soon.” I kissed her and ran upstairs to get ready. After a quick shower and shave, I dressed, and teleported away. The elevator doors dinged as I reached the top floor. The receptionist greeted me with a smile which I returned. A few people stopped me to ask how Meg was recovering. We didn’t tell anyone the truth about her. We told them that she was injured during training. Martha stood when she saw me. A grin stretched from ear to ear. “Dylan dear, head on in.” Martha ushered me through the door. Harrison Stanston stood when he saw me. A huge smile graced his face. “Mr. Ohmsford please sit.” I shook his hand. “Mr. Stanston am I in trouble?” “No dear boy you are not.” Mr. Stanston’s booming laughing had me strighting my spine. “I learned some information about you.” He told me. “Oh?” “You didn’t tell me that you had relations to the Princess.” He grinned. “Oh yeah well-“ I rubbed the back of my neck. “We decided it would be best for my career if people didn’t know.” “I can understand that.” He nodded. “However-“ He paused and I waited for him to tell me to gather my things. My relationship to the royal family could be seen as nepotism. “That’s a big deal Dylan. You are practically royalty. Even if it is by marriage.” “Not really though. My brother was the one who married into the family.” I shook my head. “I am not looking for any special treatment.” “Of course not.” He nodded. “I’m sorry about your brother.” “Thanks.” I didn’t know what else to say. “Anyway the reason for our meeting.” He paused then spoke into the intercom. “Send him in.” The door opened and Captain Robert Hollows. My mouth drops when I see him. “Captain Robert?” “Hello Dylan.” He nods. “Captain Robert told me that you assisted in the arrest of one their most wanted.” Mr. Stanston begins. “I would like to offer you the lead role in the prosecution for this case.” My mouth dropped open again. “Really?” “Yes it’s yours if you want it.” He nods. “Of course I do.” I answer a little to enthusiastically. Clearing my throat I try again. “I would be honored.” “Very good.” Mr. Stanston smiles. “Here is the file. Do well and you are looking at a promotion.” He dismisses me and Captain Robert follows. “How is Princess Niky holding up?” He stops me. “About that.” I pause. “You should come with me.” “Is everything alright?” His eyes widen. “Yeah, but- you should really come to the castle with me.” I tell him. He agrees and I telport us back to the castle. I lead him to the sitting room and find everyone still there. The kids are gathered on the floor and the adults are sitting on the couches all of them staring at Justin. Robert gasps. “It can’t be.” Justin looks up and he grins. “Robert.” He stands and walks to the man who is still as a statue. “It’s good to see you.” “Justin!” Robert takes Justin’s out stretched hand and pulls him into a hug. Justin hugs him back. “When?” “This morning technically.” Justin shrugs as he pulls back. Robert pulled something from his jacket pocket. It was Justin’s badge. “I’ve had this on me everyday for two years. It’s yours if you still want it.” Justin pauses and looks at me. “Congrats by the way Dylan?” I blinked at him. “How did you know?” “I sat it go down.” Justin chuckles. “Oh thanks.” My face reddens. “You should take the job Justin.” “I think I have to much to do right now.” Justin tells me. “Take the job Dad.” Hannah interjects. Justin looks at Niky. The fear in her eyes is evident. He shakes his head. “I can’t. Niky-“ Everyone looks at her and she burst into tears. “No.” She shakes her head. “I am terrified of losing you, but I will not stand in the way of your dream.” “Niky I-“ “No Justin.” Claire interjects. “Being a Trybrid is dangerous, and it would be good for the four of you to have an in at the police department.” “Claire’s right.” I nod. “Things for us as the Trybrids just got real. The fight is really on now Jay, and we need all the help we can get. Take the job.” He suddenly grins. “This could be good for us.” “What do you mean?” I tilt my head. “One in law enforcement, one in prosecution, one in healthcare, and one in government.” Justin smirks. “I can see it all.”
