Chapter 15

Making friends might have been a bad thing. One of the reason why was because you would have to give up one lazy weekend just to hang out with your friends. Ayanna did not like that. But she could not say no to the varsities when they asked her and Lilia to hang out on Sunday at the mall. So, she accepted the invitation in behalf of Lilia then proceeded to whine about it on Saturday evening. “I don’t even like shopping that much! I mean, at least with guys, I don’t enjoy it,” she complained as she was sitting on her bed, hugging her pillow. “We could be watching movies all throughout the weekend.” “Or studying,” Lilia muttered before sighing as she faced Ayanna. She was on her seat in front of her desk, studying. “Your whining won’t do you any good unless you decide to whine to Lake instead. Anyway, you’re the one who accepted the invitation.” Ayanna whined, “b-but how can I reject when Ethan and Lucio looked pretty excited about it? Fine, I just have to suck it up and be a big girl, right?” “Yes, yes.” Lilia nodded. “By the way, Camille messaged me, talking about a class reunion of some sort,” Ayanna said in a soft voice. “Are we going?” Lilia shook her head. “Let’s not if you don’t feel comfortable around them enough. It’s enough that you have seen her last Wednesday. Are you sure you’re not upset about it anymore though?” Ayanna was not sure if she still was. For nights, she had a hard time sleeping. Their voices echoed in her head. Then, suddenly, they became some unknown voices that told her that she and Lake were Earth and heaven. She did not know why that upset her more than it should but it did. It once again ruined her confidence and her pride. However, she did not want to admit any of that to Lilia. Not when the girl would obviously worry a little too much. “I’m fine,” she assured her best friend. “I’m a tough person.” “Fine, if you say so then.” Lilia shrugged, turning away from Ayanna. She resumed writing the notes she had been trying to copy. “If you have extra time to whine, why don’t you go and find yourself something to wear? I’m sure that tomorrow that’s what you’re going to complain about.” Ayanna frowned but did not argue because she knew what Lilia said was true. She was so going to complain about her lack of clothes to wear the next day. It seemed like her consistent pattern already. With a pout, she stood up from her bed and headed to her closet. Because it was her dorm’s closet, she barely got enough clothes to wear. Usually, she would not mind repeating her clothes over and over again but this was the University’s infamous varsities! She should at least make an effort. “Lake has seen all of my clothes and that’s just annoying,” she said out loud. “I don’t think Lake would mind. He sees you on your pajamas all the time,” Lilia helpfully commented. “That’s different,” Ayanna argued. “It’s his fault for deciding to come here almost every night. It should be my rest time, you know?” Although to be honest, she did not see why those two would be so different except for it was worse being seen in her pajamas. “Wear white again,” Lilia suggested. Ayanna glared at her best friend. “Never. I’m going to wear black instead. To hell with the color white. I won’t be teased again. Mark my words.”   *****   Lilia really did mark Ayanna’s words, the latter knew because of how the former was smirking in triumph. It turned out, Lake had the same idea as Ayanna and he wore a black shirt and a pair of jeans, conveniently matching Ayanna’s black shirt and jeans. They find out about it when the boys came to pick up the two girls. The boys came out of the two cars—Lucio’s and Lake’s—just so they could have a good laugh. Ayanna had to hit her own forehead in embarrassment. “Shoot me now.” That made everyone else, including Lake and excluding the as usual smirking Zaire, laugh. They seemed to enjoy embarrassing Ayanna. The female let out a sigh. “I’m going to change my shirt,” she declared. “Nah, that’s not fun,” Lucio said. “Plus, it’s gonna take too much time, you know?” He smirked before scowling. “I knew I should have asked my girlfriend to come if only she’s not too busy. I hate the fact that Lake can show off his good relationship to us all.” Kurt groaned. “Should have found myself a girlfriend.” “You’re a player, when do you not have a girlfriend?” Ethan frowned at Kurt. “Okay,” Lake intercepted before the two could argue. “Before these idiots fight, how about we leave now? And can you guys please stop teasing Ayanna every time you get a chance?” “We can’t promise but we’ll try,” Kurt said, earning a warning glare from Lake which he skillfully ignored. “Anyway, we should get going! Let’s go!” He ran to Lucio’s car. The others followed the suit. Lucio, Kurt, and Ethan rode Lucio’s car while Ayanna, Lake, Zaire, and Lilia rode Lake’s. Zaire came with them because he claimed that he did not want to be stuck with idiots. It was pretty understandable so Ayanna did not have any objections—not that she had the right to object in the first place. Arriving at the mall, the group met up by the entrance of the mall. And apparently, Ethan came up with another ridiculous suggestion. Apparently, they just decided that on the way to the mall. “Since it’s a hang out to get to know each other, how about we split into pairs? Surely, Lilia and Ayanna would prefer to hang out with each other but we’ll forbid that. We’ll forbid the Layanna couple as well,” Ethan declared. “What’s with those rules?” Lake frowned. “I mean, the two of you already close and the purpose of hanging out is to become close so what’s the point of letting you stay together?” Lucio complained. “I and Ayanna will be together!” Kurt dibbed. “Lake and Zaire are together, Lilia and Ethan, and Lucio by himself.” “Hey!” Lucio exclaimed, surprised that he was alone. “I’ll tag along Lilia and Ethan. I’m allergic to Zaire.” “And you said that me being allergic to ants is ridiculous,” Ethan scoffed. “Quit arguing and let’s go!” Kurt urged. “But why is Ayanna with Kurt?” Lake asked, looking dumbfounded. Ayanna laughed at his face. “It will be fine, Lake. We’ll just hang out. No big deal,” she said although she was quite worried about hanging out with a player that was probably even bigger of a player than Lake. The only good thing about him aside from him being nice was that at least his girlfriends sometimes lasted for months. Before Lake could even say anything else, Ayanna was dragged away by Kurt. The female decided not to utter anything as she was dragged towards the department store section of the mall. “Quick, pick a gift!” Kurt told Ayanna which confused Ayanna. “What?” “I knew it! You didn’t know, did you? Lake’s 20th birthday is next Saturday. That’s why we brought you to the mall, so we can help you pick a gift. How thoughtful of us, right?” The boy wiggled his eyebrows. “Lake is only twenty?” Ayanna asked, dumbly. “Okay, I know, that’s beside the point,” she muttered when Kurt gave her a look that said “that’s all you got from everything I said?” “So?” “So? What does Lake like? I just know that he likes white. I doubt he’ll appreciate a white crayon gifted to him now, right?” “Lake barely cares about the color. I think he’ll like it as long as it came from you,” Kurt said. Ayanna doubted that. She was sure Lake received more expensive and better gifts. He probably enjoyed too much attention from other girls before and even at the present. He might be smiling as he opened the presents they got for him. For some reason, something about that made Ayanna extremely uncomfortable.
