Chapter 19 I drew the blinds shut in the café’s windows, but kept the door unlocked for John, who’d taken up the habit of stopping by for his habitual slice of late afternoon cheesecake. Wearily, I dragged my feet back to the front counter. Today had been a busy day and I’d trudged through the work alone because Donnie hadn’t shown up this morning. Concerned, I’d left a message on Aleid and Liliana’s machine, and then had phoned Drika, but no one had called me back. Throughout the day, I’d experienced surges of anxiety. Something felt wrong. Behind the counter, I rang up the day’s total on the cash register and then started counting bills. I hadn’t slept well last night and my mind was on Donnie and the effects my words might have had on him. I kept miscounting and having to start again.
