Chapter 1: The Impulsive Idea
"Idiot! Why did I let you talk me into this?" I snap, pulling my messy brown hair into a bun. My best friend Christina merely smirks at me, and then continues on ahead down the dark road. We've been driving for about eight miles, following our fathers and their men's cars. How they haven't sensed us following them, I don't know, maybe they're getting old. Christina steps on the gas, whizzing by trees at a thunderous speed. I have to practically dig my nails into the leather seats to keep from tipping over. "Slow down psycho!" I growl. "I can't, or I'll lose sight of them" she says pressing the gas some more. I grit my teeth in an attempt to refrain from grabbing the wheel. I don't know how much more of this I can take. "We need to go back. If they catch us, I'll be grounded for a month." "If you'd stop whining about my driving, then I can get us there before they can catch us." Her usually neat blonde hair is messy due to her nervous scratching, and the open drivers side window. She looks almost as insane as this plan of her's is. Miss Leadfoot here, had the brilliant idea to trek across eighty miles after our pack's leaders, onto another pack's land to see if the mysterious future alpha of the Blackwood pack lived up to his reputation. Keaton Thunders. Every syllable sends shivers down my spine. But back to this 'show stopping' plan of ours. Our pack's most important officials were to travel across the border, to the Blackwood pack to form our new peace treaty. The Backwood's were notorious for starting wars and ending them with as much blood and gore, as all the world wars combined. So forming a treaty with them would be the safest thing to do, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the Blackwood's wrath. This whole peace treaty thing was supposed to be top secret, not a werewolf in the pack was to know of the treaty until it was over, but once Christina Martin finds out, you better believe she wants in. Her dad being the Beta doesn't help, she gets wind of all sorts of stuff. I'm glad I'm the Alpha's daughter and not her, or she would know about all these gathering first instead of second. So that leads us to this very moment on a dark road, doing almost ninety to keep up with my dad's men. Some plan this was, because this whole thing could go south at any moment. Traveling onto another packs territory without the invited group's permission, could lead to complications, and by complications I mean instant death. Especially trespassing onto Blackwood territory, would be worse than most. "I think I'm going to be sick," I gag. What can I say, one minute we're in my room relaxing, and the next she's pulling me into the car. I think I've gotten whiplash just from staring out the window at the constant blur of scenery. "Come on, Lola. I want to cross at the same time as them, so Blackwood think one big group passed onto their land," she grunts. She is truly a woman on a mission. I look at her, nose flared, eyes filled with determination, and mangled wind whipped hair. I stifle back a laugh. "Keaton Thunders. Can you imagine, Lola? I wonder if he's as deadly as the stories make him out to be" she smiles giddy, keeping her eyes on the road. All the stories of Keaton Thunders whisper three things: sex, danger, power. He's a legend in the werewolf world, and he's not even twenty one. His name is on everyone's lips. His father plans to hand him the title any day now, it's only a matter of time. They say he's to be the most powerful alpha in this day and age, and can kill in an instant without hesitation. The reaction to his name and reputation would usually scare or send any werewolf running in fear, but to me the stories only intrigue me. Maybe something's wrong with me. But I guess I'm not alone, because Christina feels the same. "Holy shit!" I scream, pointing through the windshield. Christina slams on the breaks and the car screeches to a halt, narrowly missing a raccoon. The rodent stares at us with beady eyes that glow yellow when faced with our headlights. "What the-" Christina honks the horn and the creature hissed, before scampering off into the bushes. I close my eyes and attempt to calm my pulsing heart rate. "Well that was fucking close," Christina breaths, before restarting the car. "Now will you slow down? You nearly killed that thing" I snap. She doesn't reply, she squints ahead trying to see the glowing lights of our pack council's SUV. "Can you check where we are?" she requests, turning on the fog lights. I groan and check Google Maps. The traveling dot claims we're about two miles from Blackwood pack territory. I look around and realize if we want to stay hidden, then we'll have to park in the woods and hike the rest of the way. "Pull over onto that path. We should walk the rest" I mumble. Christina turns onto a gravel road and goes about ten feet, before putting the car in park. She reaches into the back seat and grabs her small duffle bag that she packed before we left. I stare at her questionably as she opens it. She pulls out a pair of flashlights, a compass, and two black hoodies. She throws the second hoodie at me. "Put this on. We need to blend in." "What is this? Black ops! I'm not participating in your crazy mission" I huff, crossing my arms. She looks at me and says the two words she knows will make me cave, "Keaton Thunders." My breath catches in my throat like its the first time I've heard the words. My heart begins to beat fast, and my palms get sweaty. Why does a simple name cause me to react this way? I pull the hoodie over my head and snatch one of the flashlights from her open hand. Christina's eyes glitter with imagination and victory. Show off. "Okay, game time. Let's do this" she states, flinging open the car door. Groaning in annoyance, I slide out into the dark of night. The woods are eerily quiet and a thick layer of mist coats the trees. It's beyond creepy, like something out of a horror movie. I pull my hood over my head, flick on my light, and turn to face Christina. Her eyes meet mine and we nod. Creeping quietly into the woods, we begin our mission to see the mysterious future alpha.
