Chapter 2: Up In The Trees

1385 Words
After battling our way through cobwebs and a series of wrong turns, Christina and I arrive at the border that separates no man's land from the legendary Blackwood pack's land. We lay in wait next to the road where in any minute our pack committee caravan will pass. Its important we enter the grounds at the same time as the group so the Blackwood's will only sense one entrance. I shift uncomfortably on the damp ground. Laying in a bush at one in the morning and about to trespass onto the most dangerous' pack's land, is not how I saw my night going. "Oww, get off my foot" I nudge Christina in the butt. "My bad," she chuckles. She's laying on the ground with a pair of binoculars positioned through a gap in the bushes watching pack movements. She looks similar to a sniper in position to take a deadly shot. "Keep a look out for the trucks," she whispers to me. "I'm looking, keep your pants on." I stare beyond the bushes at the long gravel road that runs from the main highway to the Blackwood's main gates. I feel a slight tickling on my leg and move just in time to see a large hairy spider crawling down my knee. I screech and flick it with my index finger, sending it flying into a nearby shrub. "Shhh! You're going to blow our cover!" Christina snaps. "Oh don't even star- Wait, I see them!" I whisper yell to Christina. She turns her binoculars down the road and breaths 'finally' when she sees the three SUVs approaching. Quickly gathering up our duffle bags, I roll onto my side preparing to jump over the borderline. As the trucks get closer, Christina and I smile. Just as the SUV's cross the border, we duck and roll over the border at the same time. They don't see us because we dodge into the bushes again on the other side "Perfect. Come on!" Christina urges me. We quietly step behind various trees to keep from view, as we follow the gravel road. It appears to go on for another mile deeper into the isolated forest. "How do we know where to go?" I ask stupidly. I mean, come on! I'm tired, what'd you expect? "Duh! Follow the road dummy," she rolls her eyes, gesturing to the terrain. We walk in silence, listening with our wolf hearing for any unsuspected fighter wolfs. Most pack members that belong to the Blackwood pack, are trained at a young age to kill and destroy. A five year old can be a lethal as three strong fighters put together. Its what the Blackwood's do best, preparing for wars at any opportunity. I squint ahead through the fog, I can barely make out an outline of a large building. I gulp, this is it, no turning back now. I slap Christina on the arm and gesture to the outline. Her mouth forms a perfect 'o' at the large structure. "That must be their pack house," I whisper quietly. "We need to find some place to hide and watch. We can't just walk up in there," she says. I nod in agreement and start to scan the surrounding trees for a possible hideout. My eyes catch sight of a perfect place, and I elbow Christina in the ribs to get her attention. She yelps and hunches over breathing deeply. "What!?" she gasps out. I gesture to the tree I was eyeing, "That one looks good." "How are we both gonna fit up there? Its pretty small," she squints. "Not if we squish in. Plus I need the body heat, I'm freezing" I complain. "Fine, fine, winny baby, get climbing. I'll keep a look out." I drop my duffle and use my strength to climb the trunk of the twenty foot tree. I'm not a big fan of heights, but I don't want to miss a chance to get a birds eye view of the notorious Blackwood pack layout. I step carefully onto the sturdiest looking branches until I'm at a good place. The branch I'm kneeling on looks like it'll support both me and Christina, and the surrounding branches give us a good view of the land but will still keep us concealed. "All clear," I call down to Christina. She begins to climb up, and I take in the surroundings. Ahead of me lays the Blackwood's territory. The packhouse stands tall in the far corner of the main square. It's beautiful, modern, yet cozy at the same time. A glistening fountain sits in front with a circular drive way around it. Beyond that stands different training rings where men and women are brutally training. It's like they're training for the Hunger Games or something. Throwing knives hit the stuffed target dead in the heart. I see a girl around my age fighting a boy of the same age. She flips over him then knocks him forward with her legs. This looks insane. "Wow!" Christina gasps looking around. I nod, "They are certainly preparing for something." "They've got a ton of enemies, but that's what happens when you're the largest pack in America. They have to be prepared for anything," she explains. "Look!" I point as she looks to where I point. The iron gates are pulled open by buff looking guys, and our pack's SUVs drive in one by one. I keep my eyes on the first one, that's where my dad usually rides. The cars drive down the center road until they pull up to the fountain in front of the packhouse. Each car parks and two guards emerge from each. I remember my dad saying that when he travels to other packs, he takes four cars, four guards in each, and one pack official to be protected. My father emerges from the first car and is immediately followed by the other two guards. After him, emerges Christina's father, our pack's third, then our fourth in command. All four members form a box with their guards. Two guards behind the official then two guards in front. It's meant to look intimidating to other packs but it won't work on the Blackwood's. They all stand facing the packhouse waiting for the Alpha. I inhale nervously while knotting my fingers. I look at Christina as she stares ahead, looking like a deer in headlights. My heart rate increases and I start to get dizzy. I brace myself with the trunk of the tree for support, but my heart rate continues to grow steadily. Then the door of the packhouse opens and out steps the Alpha and Luna. Alpha Tucker and Luna Rose. Their love story is the modern take on Romeo and Juliet. They met while at the Full Moon Festival many years ago. Their fathers were enemies but temporarily put aside their grudge just for the Full Moon Festival, where all packs in America met for a week to thank the Moon Goddess. Since it was the Moon Festival, the mates found there were said to be stronger than most. Tucker and Rose accidently stumbled into each other and rumor has it, time stopped for a total of five minutes. In those five minutes they fell deeply in love and marked each other then and there. Now they are the mates that every unmated she wolf wants to be like when she finds her mate. "Oh my god, they're perfect!" Christina gasps. For some reason I can't answer her. The dizzy feeling gets stronger and my heartbeat slams against my chest. Its like it's getting worse. My eyes get blurry and my breath grows shallow. Christin fails to notice what's happening to me, she's too engrossed in the Alpha and Luna. The feelings grow to be too much and I slide off the branch. Just as I began to fall, I saw another blur exit the packhouse but I didn't get a good look at it. Since I'm a werewolf I can't get injured by simply falling out of a tree, so I don't worry that I'm falling to my death. All I can focus on is the pounding of my heart and that figure that exited the house. Something tells me that my life is about to change and I have no idea why..
