Chapter 3: Max

‘Waffle House? Really? They really want to meet at two o’clock in the morning at a f*****g Waffle House?’ I sigh as I shake my head and roll my eyes. ‘Whatever, at least we are going to get this meeting over and done with and then we can go home.’ I pull into the parking lot as I find the one they sent me to. Some random Waffle House in Decatur that probably only ever sees correctional officers from the nearby work release prison and plant workers from the guys who work on the river. I shake my head again as I look inside and realize the place is pretty much deserted at least. The only ones in there were Lucas, Win, and the two employees working the graveyard s**t. At least they thought ahead when choosing a place to meet at. ‘Don’t give them too much credit, Jax. It’s likely Lucas was hungry and wanted something to eat and this is the only place open this late at night… Goddess, sometimes I wonder just how the hell he even survives without his mate to cook for him every second of every day.’ Jax snickers in the back of my head as I shake my head slowly and walk into the restaurant. As soon as I enter the building, I stop dead in my tracks. The most amazing smell on the face of the earth hits my senses and I instantly lose my breath. I pop my head up and look around the store as I find the person who smells so sweet and so good. That is when I see her and I know. 'MATE!!!' I swallow hard as she turns around slowly and locks eyes with me and I feel the mate bond slam into place. Her scent of Rosewood, lavender, and honey hit me like a ton of bricks and I do my best to not fall straight to the floor. Her eyes are the deepest pools of hazel I have ever seen. Her hair is thick with tight curls that are piled on the top of her head. Her raven hair complements her beautiful golden ebony complexion perfectly. She is short in nature at roughly five feet and four inches tall with her body being super thick and curvy. She isn’t built like a wolf, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a wolf. I feel Jax purr in the back of my head. 'I love them thick and juicy… Just… Like… Mate…' 'Hush, Jax… Not yet. I don’t think she realizes who we are…' I swallow hard as I give her a bright smile. I watch her small hand clutch tightly to the tray in her hand and I move closer to her. She is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen and I know she is destined to be mine. I stand tall in front of her as I feel Jax trying to fight for control. “Hi,” I say as I look down at her. Her eyes double in size as a blush starts to creep up her neck and land on her cheeks. Goddess she is perfect and I just met her. “Hello… uhm…” She shakes her head firmly as she lowers her eyes. I wish she wouldn’t do that, but I’ll allow it for now. She pops her head back up with a huge smile on her face. Even though I knew it was forced, I couldn’t help but marvel at her amazing smile. “Welcome to Waffle House. You can sit wherever you’d like, sir.” I feel like I have been slapped in the face. 'What the f**k was that? Jax, can she not feel the mate bond?' I felt it slam into place the moment we locked eyes with one another. 'Nope… I’m pretty sure she is a human…' Fuck… I inhale deeply and do my best to not groan at her scent as I smile and nod my head. “Of course… Uhm… My party is behind you.” “Oh! Perfect! What would you like to drink? Your two friends have gotten coffee and another drink, but you don’t have to do the same thing if you don’t want to.” She smiles sweetly at me, and I know it is genuine. I can feel it. I chuckle low and nod my head slowly. “I’ll take a coffee and a Mr. Pibb, please. Also, what is your name?” She smiles as she turns back around and I see her hazel eyes light up. “My name is Jazmine. I am going to be your waitress for the morning.” “Jazmine,” I say her name and I feel Jax purr again. “Nice to meet you, I’m Max.” “Nice to meet you too, Max… Here, let me go get your drinks and you guys can look at the menu.” She quickly turns around and I watch her walk back behind the counter to get my coffee and my soda. Goddess… She is perfect. You’re telling me. Jax continues to purr as I take my seat and I feel Lucas kick me under the table. He gives me a strange look as he shoots me a mindlink. 'Uhm… Do you mind telling us what that was? It isn’t every day you start flirting with random chicks at a restaurant.' 'Yeah! What if I wanted to take her as mine.' Win chuckles, but I don’t hold back. I growl low. Just low enough for the two of them to hear it but not loud enough to startle the two humans in the restaurant. 'That girl is my mate! She is also your future luna, so make sure you act right. Now behave, she is coming back and I don’t want you two to look like idiots.' She comes back with the tray balanced in front of her. She sets it on the edge of the table and starts to place my coffee and soda on the table top with shaking hands. I reach for the coffee and accidentally graze her skin. I feel the sparks fly between us and I purr at the sensation. Jazmine jumps though. Humans aren’t used to these same feelings and she won’t know that these little sparks are meant to feel good. “Oops, so sorry. I didn’t mean to shock you.” Right… Shocking is what they call it. “It’s fine. It isn’t the first time and I doubt it will be the last… So, do you always work night shift?’’ I want to know more about her. I want to know everything I can before I walk out of this place. She smiles politely and nods her head slowly. “I do work pretty much every night. If I am not here then I am at home working on my schooling or taking care of my son.” Jax growls. 'Has someone else gotten her pregnant?! How is that possible?!' 'Relax, Jax… Humans are far different from wolves. They don’t typically have fated mates and they don’t have to go into heat in order to have a baby.' 'We are not raising that baby… Well, we will as long as it is cute.' 'I’m sure it is cute.' I chuckle in my head as I look up into her eyes. “How old is your son?” “Uhm… Six months… He… His dad is no longer in the picture.” Perfect… “He must be one cute little boy if his mom is as beautiful as you are… Do you have any other kids?” I smile at her as she licks her lips. Goddess I want to taste those lips for myself but I know I can’t. She doesn’t have the same feelings as I do with the mate bond or with its pull. She shakes her head no as she steps closer to the table. “No… I just have him. I figure he will be my only child too.” I frown a little bit. “How come?” She smiles softly and shakes her head. “I don’t know… After his father… I just… I don’t think having a man in my life is right for me.” She is scared… Scared of her son’s father or scared of something else? I have no idea, but I want to find out. I need to find out. Not just for my sake but for her sake as well. I want her to be safe and I want her to be happy. She is my mate after all and I am going to take care of her one way or another. She stares into my eyes and I can’t help but grab her hand. I feel the sparks fly again but this time she doesn’t pull away. I want to know everything I can about her. I want to be her protector and the father of all of her kids. Even this son that she happened to have with someone else. He deserves a strong male figure in his life. I was about to make my move on her when that damn grill cook cleared his throat. Who the f**k does he think he is? I glared at him, but it was too late. Jazmine was already out of her trance.
