Emilia woke up the next morning feeling like crap. She had been drinking until midnight with her mother, so she wasn't shocked when she puked up her dinner. When her stomach settled, Emilia brushed her teeth to get rid of the taste. Taking a shower, she took her time under the hot spray and then jumped out to get dressed. Emilia rushed out of her dorm, quickly grabbing her phone.
Swiping away the unknown missed call, Emilia rushed to her first class. Emilia went through the day feeling drained and slightly weak, like someone was sucking her energy. Sighing Emilia rejoiced when lunch rolled around and ate a warm broth for her stomach with sprite.
She felt better up until the middle of her fifth lecture for the day. When Professor Mitchell was in the middle of his spill, Emilia got the horrible nauseous feeling again. Telling Blair to take notes for her, Emilia rushed out and as soon as she got into the hall, she threw up in the closet trash bin.
Seeing his student getting sick, Professor Mitchell rushed to her, "Do you need to go to the nurse?" Emilia nodded feeling light headed and soon, Blair and a male classmate she didn't know walked her to the nurses office.
Nurse Jackson was a sweet American woman who had been in Ireland for ten years. She loved helping people and when she saw the pale girl, she immediately had her laid down. When the two left, Nurse Jackson looked to her, "How do you feel Emilia?" Emilia let out a shaky sigh, "Well I had been feeling nauseous, then dizzy, light headed I guess. Now I just feel pooped." Nurse Jackson smiled kindly, "Okay and have you been drinking? It could be a hangover."
Emilia thought on this, "Well I had two with my mom, but the rest of the night I drunk water. I'm sure I threw up most of it thought cause I woke up at like three this morning and three up to."
Nurse Jackson looked at Emilia carefully, "Have you been having unprotected s*x?" Emilia started to say no but then realized Carter had c*m inside her. "Yes...but I have the nexplanon." Nurse Jackson nodded, "Which arm?" Emilia held up her left and Nurse Jackson felt the inside of Emilia's arm. "Well I don't feel it, it must have not been inserted right."
Emilia started to panic then, "Wait so..." Nurse Jackson went to a drawer and came back with a pregnancy test. Emilia hesitated to take it, but she had to know. Going into the bathroom, Emilia peed and waited. The entire time she kept thinking what if she was pregnant?
She hadn't seen Carter in the 2 months they'd been seperate out of sheer desperation of not wanting to have a melt down wherever they stood. She also didn't know if their was a baby, if he'd want him or her. They'd never talked about it.
When Emilia's phone pinged she slowly lifted the test.
Pregnant.
It said it in big bold letters but it took a second for it to sink in.
Emilia came out of the bathroom and when Nurse Jackson saw her face she didn't even have to ask. Sitting Emilia down with orange juice she softly asked, "Are you with the father?" Emilia sniffled, "We were. We've broken up and now... it's been months though..." Nurse Jackson nodded in understanding, "Sweetie first make an appointment and find out what happened to your birth control rod. Then worry about what you're going to do."
Emilia thought about that when she made the appointment and sat in the waiting room. She saw other pale, scared teen girls and even some older. Some already with kids. Nervous when her name was called, Emilia went to the back.
After the usual blood pressure, iron, and physical part of the exam, she waited on the doctor. When Dr. Patton walked in she looked at Emilia and let out a deep breath of relief, "Emilia, thank god what a relief!" Emilia looked at her concerned, "Huh?" Dr. Emma Patton smiled a thousand watt smile but her eyes showed nerves.
"Well...when you came to get your birth control inserted into your arm, there was a mishap. It didn't insert when injected into your skin. When we went to dispose of the vial, we saw the rod still inside. The vial used to give it to you was faulty."
Emilia let out a shudder, "That was two months ago! No one called to tell me that!" Dr. Patton nodded and tried to calm her down, "We did call today to inform you of this, and we're so sorry we didn't catch this sooner." Looking at her files on Emilia she closed her eyes when she saw why she needed to come in.
"You think you're pregnant?" Emilia nodded, "I took a pregnancy test and it was positive." Dr. Patton told Emilia to lay down and after checking her out downstairs, she put some cold jell on her belly. Sliding the wand around the skin, Dr. Patton stopped as the baby's heart beat took over the room.
Emilia looked at the screen and whispered, "How far along?" Dr. Patton coughed, "Two months exactly." Emilia let out a deep breath, and Dr. Patton turned to her, "You do have other options Emilia. You can choose not to carry the pregnancy to term, or give it to a couple who is ready for a baby. It's your body, your choice."
Emilia sniffled, "I can't think of this right now. I need to speak with the babies father first. My family."
Dr. Patton nodded and started to say something but decided not to. Emilia sat up and wiped her belly as she whispered, "I'm not going to sue, it was an accident." Walking out of the office, Emilia hailed a cab and went to her brothers. Sitting with them, she told them the truth from beginning to end. When she was done, the hugs she got were unexpected but nice.
She needed the comfort and support of her family. Because when she told her father he bitterly cackled at her, "I knew it! I knew it! Now look at you, in here giving me the sad eyes. Well I refuse to raise that bastard! You better go find whoever it's father may be and make him!"
Emilia sniffled at her father's harsh words before delivering her own, "And this is why momma left you and won't come back! You are a heartless bastard! I will take care of my baby on my own! You will stay away from us Ernesto." Emilia had then left and went to sit at the coffee shop around the corner from the hotel.
She stared into her cup of water wishing it held answers. Any answers.
"Sis," Looking up at Julian Emilia winced, "Don't be mad."Julian sighed and sat across from her, "I'm not mad, I'm just shocked sis. I'm sorry about dad, he's drunk and a douche. He's not thinking clearly, but when he wakes up in the morning and remembered what he says he's going to hate himself." Emilia sniffled, "It's just a lot. Me and my babies father are not together and he might not want it. But I do."
Julian nodded, "You going to come home?" Emilia thought on that. If she went back to Phoenix she'd be walking away from the home and people she had come to love. "No." Julian didn't have to ask his sister why either. Hell if he had found a private island away from their f****d up dysfunctional family he'd never leave either.
Smiling Julian came up with an idea, "Okay, so how about this. If the father of your child don't want anything to do with the kid, I'll move here. With the two of you." Emilia nodded and whispered, "I would love that Julian, thank you."
Watching his sister play with her water he softly asked, "You know how you're going to tell him?" Emilia let out a nervous titter of laughter. "No. I'm most likely going to freak out and just blurt it out like an i***t. God I really don't like this and I don't want to see his reaction."
Julian nodded, "I know. But he needs to know, he deserves the chance to at least be there sis." Emilia nodded in agreement, "So the real question is, how do you blow up someone's life in the gentlest way possible?"
