It's Her Fault

Adam’s P.O.V.

“We have known each other all our lives, Adam. You know very well that all my life, I prepared myself for this position, not because I am the right heir for this position, but because I want to. How could you, my best friend, do this to me?” William once again yelled at me, and I scoffed in disdain.

“One thing that I want to correct you, William, is that there is no hierarchy for the higher positions in a pack. I am the future alpha of this pack, but if I don’t perform well, and obey the right laws and believes that we have all our lives, the pack will take a second to strip me from the title and give that to someone who can fit it on the criteria.”

I paused and slightly tilted my head, disdain and coldness evident in my gaze, and I didn’t try to hide it from him.

He was still looking at me with a hurtful expression on his face. I announced to take Walter, his younger brother, to take as my beta, and sent him to the royal academy for further training. I still had a few months before I would take over alpha’s position from my father, and I wanted to use them to groom Walter.

“The day you decided to deceive us by lying about Pearl being your mate, you betrayed our trust, William, and once your trust breaks, nothing stays same. If you can lie something this big, you can lie easily at any time according to your convenience.”

His eyes widened in shock and disbelief. I sneered and leaned on my chair. “You… you are doing this because of Summer, right? You always treated her as your sister, and now you are taking revenge on her behalf, right?” He asked me in an accusing tone, his voice cracked a little in the end.

I laughed at his stupidity this time. “You think so highly of yourself, William. A liar like you doesn’t deserve anything from Summer, William. I am glad that you rejected her, because she deserves someone much better than you.” I spat on him in disgust and hatred in end, anger bubbling up in my heart.

He looked too hurt to even utter a word, but I had no patience left for him to listen any of his accusation or bantering.

I pulled my laptop towards me while trying to suppress my anger towards him. “If you now excuse me, William. I have enough on my plate to deal with. You go and supervise your mating ceremony with Pearl. At least, you got the mate you wanted in the end.” I asked him to leave, but didn’t forget to taunt him in the end.

There was thick silence in the room, and it was now suffocating me. To be honest, his mere presence around me irked me so much. We were best friends for all our lives, and I always thought that I knew him well enough to trust him with my life.

But after what he did to Summer, and to the sacred mate bond that he was blessed by our goddess, my lifelong trust in him shattered completely. It wasn’t only Summer who was hurt at that time. I was also hurt by what he did, but I couldn’t show my pain because of Summer.

“Please, Adam…. Don’t do this to me. I… I have become a joke to the whole pack. They… they even started criticizing Pearl. They called her mate-stealer now. Do you think our mating ceremony will be a happy occasion for us now? No, Adam…. The best occasion of our lives has become the most embarrassing event of our lives.” He pleaded in a desperate tone after some time.

I closed my eyes, balling my fists tightly, suppressing the urge to beat the s**t out of him. He still didn’t understand that it was his own doing that had backfired on him.

“Are you and your happiness above the pack and the natural laws bestowed by the moon goddess, William?” I asked him in a stern tone filled with mockery.

His already widened eyes nearly popped out of their sockets in shock this time. “The management is already lenient towards you to letting you and Pearl stay in the pack and letting you hold your mating ceremony instead of throwing you two out of the pack for your heinous crime. Choosing a mate is not a crime, but lying about the mate bond and rejecting your mate only to keep your lover happy is a crime in our world, William. Instead of reflecting on your mistakes, you are asking me to let you be on the beta position? You want me to pay you for your crimes?” I continued taunting him angrily.

He just kept on staring at me without blinking, his eyes continued to stay wide opened. He was hurting, but it was his own fault.

“You want me to give others a reason to follow your steps and hurt innocents?” I threw another taunt and banged the top of the table with my palm harshly.

The tension in the room was so thick that it could be cut by the knife. I was now breathing heavily, but closed my eyes to calm myself down a bit. It was impossible to wake up someone who pretended to be asleep.

“Go, William. I have so much work to finish, and your mess to clear. This incident has reached to the palace and now I need to give an explanation to my superiors because you were my future-beta.” I asked him to leave while telling him what he had brought to me.

“You…. You were summoned by the palace?” he asked me in a shocked tone, filled with fear. I snapped my eyes angrily once again, and a loud growl erupted from my chest, making him tremble in fear.

“Out.” I snarled at him, and he almost fell from the chair while trying to stand up. My father refused to deal with William and his mess because of the summon that we got from the palace. William and Pearl had turned our pack into a laughing stock in front of other packs.

“I… I am sorry, Adam… I am really sorry.” He muttered his apology in a fearful tone before running out of the room. I banged the table harshly once again, making its legs squeaked aloud but I didn’t pay attention to it.

William’s P.O.V.

I ran without having any destination in mind. I just wanted to go away from everything for a while so that I could clear my mind. Everything was going in a perfect direction in my life until I messed with my mate's bond with Summer.

Why did that happen to me?

What did I do wrong by pursuing my happiness instead of accepting what the goddess had chosen for me?

Why can’t I choose my mate?

Was it my fault that Summer is not as intelligent, and strong as Pearl is? Why can’t they see the difference between both sisters?

To my dismay, my wolf, Will, had also stopped talking to me. He was angry with me because I rejected our fated mate.

I stopped right in front of the big pond that we had in our pack. I fell to the ground on my knees and closed my eyes.

The beta position was my pride, and to get the love of my life, I was forced to leave that position. Why?

Everything went worse after Summer left the pack. Everyone, including my parents, blamed me for creating this chaos, but why can’t they see that it was Summer?

She was the one who created a hill out of mole. She was always jealous of Pearl. It was her fault that she was out of league of Pearl. She should have accepted the rejection silently. Instead she made me and Pearl the bad people here.

I slowly opened my eyes and looked at the calm water of the pond. I needed to talk to Summer. She had to help me get everything back.

I am sure that for the sake of Adam and his position as the future alpha, Summer would do anything even if she had to take the blame of rejecting me on her will.

I took a few deep breaths with the resolution in my mind. I needed to talk to her at any cost, but the problem is that I didn’t have her number.

I picked my phone out and call a number, my eyes still glued on the water who sometimes had ripples on the surface.

“Find me the number of a girl named Summer Holt. She is a former member of the Blood River Pack, and currently residing in a human city.” I gave whatever information that I had on her to the person on the other side of the call.

"This is not enough. Give me more information about her workplace, or school or college name if she is still studing." the person asked me in a hoarse voice.

"I don't have any more information except this, but I can send you her pic." I replied to him in a stern tone, clutching the phone tightly.

"That will not help either. Still, send me. I will try my best to get any information on that girl." he asked me in the same tone, and we both hung up.

I closed my eyes again but felt a pressure at the back of my mind. I opened the mind-link immediately. "Where are you?" Pearl's voice boomed at the back of my mind. "I am out. What's up?" I asked her in a calm and gentle voice.

"Why didn't you tell me that you are strip off beta position?" she yelled aloud and I furrowed my brows.
