Summer’s P.O.V.
“I am not having a good feeling about this situation, Marie. What if this second chance mate of ours also wants to reject us?” I asked Marie anxiously while pacing to and fro in the room. This uneasiness in my chest was making me panic.
“Don’t jinx ourselves, Summer. He is our mate. He needs to accept us.” Marie tried to comfort me, but I could also feel her anxiety.
“Di… did you talk to his wolf?” I asked her anxiously while stopping and slowly walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. One could see the whole hall down there through the glass.
“No.. it… it seems that he.. he is trapped at the back of his mind by his human.” She answered me anxiously, and my heart sank. I slowly put my hands on the window and leaned on it.
My heartbeat loudly when I saw Theo entering the stage with a tall man. My breath hitched when I realized who that person was.
He was Nathan Grant, clad in a deep brown tuxedo mixed with a blue shirt, he was as tall as Theo, or a few inches taller than him. There was a quite distance between us, and because of the walls and windows, I couldn’t feel his aura, but I could say that as an alpha, he was more intimidated than Adam.
My heart was racing hard against my ribcage. Was he my mate?
No, it can’t be.
William was a beta. Yet he rejected me.
Nathan was a powerful pure-breed alpha. If he is my mate, would he accept me, already rejected once she-wolf?
“Let’s get out of here, girl. Now I am also not sure.” Marie urged me anxiously. She was scared, and it made me feel a sense of foreboding.
His face was completely devoid of any expression. His eyes were cold and blank. He stood up to address the crowd, but I moved away from the window. My mate’s scent was so strong in the room that I felt breathlessness a few times.
I started pacing furiously once again, rubbing my palms to calm my nerves down. Not only were my palms sweaty, but I felt sweat dripping down on my back too. I was never this nervous my whole life, but this was something out of my control now.
I stopped in my tracks when I felt a presence outside the door. I was so frightened that I could hear my heartbeat clear and loud in my ears.
Two tall and burly men entered the room. Both of them were humans. “Ms. Holt. Please follow us. Mr. Grant would like to meet you in the suite above.” He informed me with a polite request.
“Okay.” I just nodded and stormed outside. I wanted to go away with the scent of my mate. It was still not clear to me who my mate was as I still meet him, but now I wanted this farce to be over as quickly as possible.
The corridor also had the lingering scent of my mate which was still stronger than other scents mixed here.
They went to the elevator but I refused. “Ummmm…. Let’s take the stairs.” I requested and without waiting for their reactions, I walked towards the staircase.
“The suite is on the 31st floor, Ms. Holt. Taking the elevator is the best option.” One of them told me in a worried tone.
I needed some time to clear my mind before meeting with Mr. Grant, or my mate, I don’t know…. I still don’t know, and it was now getting on my nerves.
“We will take the elevator some time later… ju… just let me take the stairs for now.” I mumbled absentmindedly, and opened the door of the staircase.
I stopped abruptly and sucked my breath when his intoxicated scent hit me hard again. “He was on stairs when we reached here.” Marie mumbled anxiously, but I could feel hurt in her voice.
“Our mate is avoiding us.” I said to her in a bitter tone. What a sh*tty luck I have. I go the second chance and just like William, this mate also didn’t want me.
I felt tears in my eyes, but I blinked them away. “Ms. Holt.” Someone called me in a concerned tone.
“Let’s go.” I mumbled and without waiting for them, I stormed towards the stairs. I lifted my gown a little and almost ran upstairs.
“Be careful, Ms. Holt.” One of the yelled behind me in panic. I was a werewolf. Above all, I was a trained and skilled warrior. Of course, I was faster than them.
“What’s the use of this life if no mate of ours wants us? What sin did we commit to be rejected by them? Why????? Just why?”
The pain, the heartbreak, the hurt, everything was so unbearable to me that I wanted to run away from here. Anywhere where I don’t have to live in fear that a mate will come and reject me, telling me that I am not good enough to be like by my mate let alone love.
I stopped and held my chest tightly, leaning my waist. Tears streamed down without any prior warning. Marie also whimpered aloud.
“Ms. Holt…. Ms. Holt.” I heard someone calling me in panic, but all the voices was now coming from distant.
“Marie…. Listen to me girl.” I called my wolf when I realized that this rejection could cost her life.
“I am not leaving, Summer. We are together in everything and we will face this together.” She refused stubbornly, but I wasn’t ready to lose her.
“No, Marie. You listen to me. Sleep now. Go deeper, and sleep now until I call you back.” I commanded her in an authoritative voice.
“You can’t command me.” She snarled in despair. “I can, and I am commanding you, Marie Holt to go into a deep sleep. You are not allowed to come out until I call you back.” I commanded her in a stern tone this time.
She snarled again, trying to reject my command, but both of us knew that she had to listen to my command. It was unusual for a werewolf, human having such authority over the wolf, but I had this power.
I squatted down, closing my eyes, still clutching my chest when Marie went deep inside my mind. I still could feel her fear, disappointment, and hurt, but I wasn’t ready to lose her.
The rejection always took a greater toll on the wolf’s mind and heart than his or human. Marie took almost two weeks to recuperate from our first rejection. It was from a beta. What would happen if Nathan Grant, a powerful alpha, was my mate?
His rejection could cost me Marie's life. I could bear parting with anyone in this world, but not with Marie. Not now, not ever.
“Ms. Holt… Ms. Holt. What’s wrong with you? Should we call a doctor?” I heard someone asking me in a worried tone. I sniffed harder and slowly looked up.
The man was one of those who were assigned me to take me to the suite. “Here… please take this.” He offered me some tissues in a worried tone.
I took the tissues and cleaned my face. “Sorry, to make you worried. I am okay… it.. it’s just issues from home lately.” I made an excuse and apologized genuinely in a choked tone.
The other man came with a glass of water. “Please, drink some water, Ms. Holt. You will feel better.” He asked me in a worried tone and I smiled weakly while standing up.
I took the glass and emptied it in one go. “Thank you.” I thanked him with sincere gratitude and sniffed one more time.
“Let…. Let’s take the elevator.” I suggested while looking at them guiltily. I noticed the number at the corner, and it was already the 15th floor.
It meant that I ran 12 floors, and they followed me. As a human, they gave their best efforts to catch up with me, and I was now ashamed to put them in such exhaustion.
My mind was now clear. The pain in my chest was still there but it was bearable now.
They guided me outside the staircase and we walked towards the elevator. “Are you sure, Ms. Holt, are you okay?” the first man asked me in a worried tone again when I wobbled a little.
“Yeah… I am fine… no need to worry. But thanks for your concern. I really appreciate your help.” I answered him but looked at both of them with gratitude.
They just smiled but I could see their concern for me in their eyes. I was ashamed that they witnessed my break-down, but I was also glad that they were concerned about me when they were a stranger to me.
We entered the elevator, and I took a deep breath after stopping behind them inside the elevator.
“You are strong enough to face this, Summer. You can do this. You must do this, not for yourself, but for Marie.” I encouraged myself while holding my chin high.
Maybe I am really not good enough to have a mate like others, or I have done a grave sin in my previous life that I had to face rejection all the time.
Whatever the reason this man had to reject me, I was ready to face it now.
I won’t let anyone trample on my dignity just because he is a high-ranked.
I walked out of the elevator behind them at a steady pace, ready to face whatever the night was about to bring in front of me.
We walked to a door and they stopped in front of the door. They looked at me with concern one more time but when they saw a faint smile on my lips, they also smiled stiffly and opened the door.
"Thanks." I mumbled before entering the suite in a steady pace. They closed the door behind me and I stopped in the middle of the living room.
The suite was vast, bigger than the whole area of my apartment, but I wasn't here to admire the interior of the suite. I was here to face another rejection.
My breath hitched when I heard the click of the knob behind me. My whole body shuddered hard as soon as his intoxicated scent hit my nostrils, making me inhale sharply.
"Mate." he growled aloud, sending a shiver passing through min spine, going straight to my lower abdomen.
