(Sophie) I stayed close to Alexander, letting the warmth of his body settle around me. The doctor’s words still echoed in my mind. I was pregnant. The thought spun me in a way that was dizzying and exhilarating all at once. It felt like my life had turned a corner before I had a chance to understand what had changed. I rested my hand lightly over my stomach, feeling the faint pressure of possibility beneath my fingers. The idea of someone already growing inside me was both strange and miraculous. I tried to imagine them, picturing little features that might belong to Alexander. Would they have his eyes, bright and calm, or his quiet laugh? The thought made me smile.
