The last werewolf standing

Chapter 3

Lunchtime arrived quickly, which I am truly happy about; one because I am starving and two because I can talk to Lara and Chris about the weekend. It’s Wednesday already, so I don’t have much time left. I need to find a safe place for my turning and I hope I can control my wolf when she arrives. If not, then I am screwed.

I remember when I was ten, I saw a boy getting his wolf and turning for the first time. He found his mate right away, but she was with her boyfriend and the boy couldn’t control his wolf, so he ended up killing his mate’s current boyfriend. It wasn’t a pretty sight to see, and I didn’t want to hurt anyone, so I must control myself before I do something that I will regret for the rest of my life. The best would be if Chris turns out to be my mate, then I could just continue with my life as it is, but I have a feeling nothing will be easy for me once I turn.

“A penny for your thoughts.” Chris says with a smile when he joins me by our regular table.

“Hi, babe. Where is Lara?” I asked him.

“Always the same question… I don’t know, she is your friend.” He says playfully, and I narrow my eyes at him.

“She is your friend too,” I told him with a chuckle. They are indeed friends, but they like to tease each other. They argue a lot too, like siblings do.

“There she is,” he says while he shakes his head and rolls his eyes when we spot her in the line watching the football team with dreamy eyes. I let out a laugh. ‘Yep, she is Lara for you.’

“Hi guys, did you see how handsome Hayes is today?” She says while sitting down, but she doesn’t take her eyes off of the football team’s table. Chris just rolls his eyes again and eats his food quietly.

“I don’t see any difference from what he looked like yesterday,” I tell her, and eat my food as well.

“Whatever,” she says and starts eating too.

“Guys, what should we do on Saturday?” I ask them.

“It’s your birthday, babe. We will do what you want to do,” Chris says, and I smile at him, but before I can answer, Lara cuts me off.

“No..no..no. If it’s up to her, we will watch a movie by her house and go to sleep early. Nuh.. hu.. We will go to a club and have fun. You turn eighteen just once in your life, so we must celebrate it,” Lara says, and I roll my eyes, she knows me so well.

“Alright,” I said, and let out a sigh. “You will go to a party on Friday. I don’t know why you insist on going to one on Saturday as well.” I tell her and Chris nods his head in agreement.

“Let’s skip the party on Friday, I wouldn’t mind,” he says and Lara glares at him.

“You guys are mean, but anyway… you already agreed, so deal with it.” She says smugly and continues eating. I am not in the mood to party. I am worried about the whole weekend. What if I can’t control my wolf and I hurt someone or what if everyone notices the changes in me, and they will lock me up like an experimental rat?

“Babe… baby? Are you okay?” Chris' question brought me back to reality and I looked at him with a fake smile.

“Of course, I just can’t believe I will turn 18 already,” I tell them.

“Yeah, time will go even faster after 18,” Lara says, and I look at her questioningly.

“How do you know that? You are not yet 18 either,” I tell her with a chuckle.

“Whatever, that’s what adults say all the time,” she says while she rolls her eyes. Chris and I just look at each other and shake our heads. She is so silly sometimes, but I love her anyway.

After lunch, we continued with our classes. I have two left, and then I will be out of here. I just want to go home and lay down on my bed with my book. I can’t wait.

“Angel, can we do the biology project today after school or are you busy?” One of my classmates, Tony, asks when I take a seat. I am thinking about an excuse that I will tell him when I hear an annoying voice say…

“Busy? She doesn’t even have friends to start with,” Hedwig says, and her minions start laughing like she said something hilarious. I just raised my eyebrows at her. As the years pass, I have less and less patience. Sometimes I just wish to shut her up with my feet. Sadly, we share this subject, so I am stuck with her and her minions. They are laughing like hyenas…so annoying.

“Actually, I have plans for today already, but what about tomorrow?” I ask Tony while I ignore Hedwig completely, who just scoffs and leaves with her friends to take her seat in the back of the classroom.

“Tomorrow is fine,” he says with a smile. “Then see you tomorrow in the library after school.” He says and walks away. He seems like a nice guy, he never tries to flirt with me, unlike most of the guys in this school, even though they know I have Chris. Actually, that’s a bit offending. What do they take me for? I am not a sl*t.

Two days later it’s already Friday, and I am very nervous about today. Yesterday, Tony and I finished our Biology project. Luckily, that was the last subject I needed to study for. The next step will be graduation next week and I can’t wait to finally be free from school. I am a good student, but I don’t really care about my grades to be honest. I just don’t care for some reason. I feel like I have more important things to take care of in the future. I know it sounds weird, but I can’t really explain this feeling. I think I will look for a job and help Nana financially. Chris and Lara got accepted to the college in the city, so they won’t be far from me luckily. My teachers and Nana tried to push me to study further, but I didn’t want to. I told them I can still do that if I change my mind later, but I don’t think I will.

“Don’t forget about tonight,” Lara says for the hundredth time today when our last class ends and I roll my eyes once again, along with Chris.

“I won’t, Lara. Don’t worry, and you don’t forget what I told you…” I tell her and she nods her head.

“I know.. I know. Don’t be clingy and act like I am not interested…” she repeats, and I nod my head.

“Right. Then see you guys tonight,” I tell them, and give a kiss to Chris before heading home. Yesterday I found a small cave that will be perfect for my shift. The entrance is not so big, so I can barricade it with some rocks to silence my screams. No one goes there anyway but just to make sure no one hears me. I am excited and scared at the same time. I hope everything will go smoothly.

“Nana, I am home.” I call out to her when I get home and I find her sitting in her armchair in the living room, watching TV.

“Hi, darling. Eat till the food is warm.” She says when I press a kiss onto her cheek.

“I will, have you eaten already?” I ask her and she shakes her head.

“No, honey. I was waiting for you,” she says.

“Come on, I will serve the food then,” I tell her with a smile, and she sits by the table while I serve the spaghetti she made.

“I was invited to a party today,” I tell her while we were eating.

“That’s great honey, you should go.” She says kindly. She always encourages me to go out and have fun with my friends when I just sit in my room and read. This party is a good excuse actually to go to the cave and shift for the first time. At least I don’t need to lie to her because I will go to that party after all. My parents told me before they sent me away to tell everyone about my birthday being on the 29th June. They knew I would have problems while shifting among humans, so Nana is no exception.

“I will Nana. Lara wouldn’t leave me alone if I didn’t agree,” I tell her while I roll my eyes and she chuckles softly.

“What are you going to do on your birthday tomorrow?” She asks and I shrug my shoulders while saying…

“Lara wants to go to a club,” I tell her, and take a bite.

“Just be careful darling, don’t talk to strangers,” she says, and I nod my head with a smile.

“You know that I can take care of myself and Chris will be there with me. You don’t need to worry,” I tell her. She knows very well that I can defend myself since she saw me training several times. I tried to stay away from people all in my life, so I don’t think that will be a problem either.

“I know honey, but don’t accept drinks from anyone. Try to drink from the bottle if you do.” She says worriedly.

“Alright, I promise.” I tell her with a smile, and she smiles back at me. I wash the dishes when we finish and watch TV with Nana for the rest of the afternoon. Nana goes to bed early while wishing me a good time. I still have two hours to go since I plan to go there a bit earlier to set everything up, so I take a shower and dress up.
