Chapter 53

While Courtney's out, I figured now is just as good a time as any to tell my parents about our big move. They've just pulled in the driveway, so I take a deep breath and sit down on the sofa to wait for them.
When they come through the front door, I stand up to greet them, but the expression on their faces makes it feel as if I've been pushed backwards by an invisible force.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
Dad shakes his head and starts up the stairs. Mom sighs and takes a seat on the sofa, patting the space next to her for me to sit down.
"Ryder, I got some pretty bad news today," she starts, placing her hand on top of mine. "I went to see Dr. Henry a couple of weeks ago about the lump in my breast, and as it turns out, it definitely is breast cancer."
