Renko’s POV.
I never thought I would have a second chance, mate. I never f*****g expected that my second chance would be the famed rogue hunter known as Berserker. But she is and even with the scars that mar her face, she is the most stunning creature I have ever laid my eyes on.
Well, apart from my first mate. She was beautiful and even still to this day, the pain of losing her and our unborn pup still hurts. But the pain that Zodiac has been through outweighs that. She has so much anger inside of her, and I know why.
There are things Zodiac does not know, and she will in time. But right now, I need to make her comfortable in her pack again. She has been a lone wolf for the last six years hunting rogues.
I turn and look at Zodiac as she stands there in her naked glory. I hold my hand out to her and if looks could kill, I would be ash. I remove the shirt from my body and hand it to her. She snatches it and pulls it on. I smirk at this. She has spirit. She even sniffed the fabric.
She walks past me, and I chuckle as I follow behind her. Her mom is trying to talk to her, but Zodiac is not responding to her and I don’t blame her. I heard the rumours that Cora abandoned her daughter and never intervened when she was bullied. Hell, she didn’t do a damn thing when she learnt what Lucas did to Zodiac.
“Zodiac, you will be staying in the pack house on my floor. I will have clothes brought for you. I know you don’t want this, but this is the best place for you to be.” I try to make conversation with her, but she just walks faster and I sigh.
“She is going to hate us.” My wolf Zeus says with a whine and I nod my head at his words.
“I know, buddy. Give it time.” I say to him as reach the packhouse and Zodiac turns and walks in a different direction.
“Zodiac, did you not hear what I said?” I shout after her and she keeps walking.
“She is going home,” Cora tells me and I just watch her walk away. I follow behind Zodiac just as I see her disappear around the back of the house. I continue to follow her when I stop in the treeline and see her sitting on the back steps clutching her knees to her chest. I can hear her crying. My heart cracks as I watch her.
I watch as she shifts in her beautiful white wolf. She curls her body up and whines. Zeus whines too. Knowing we caused this, all of it. We stay here just watching her until she cries herself to sleep.
I walk out of my hiding place and walk closer to her when she opens her eyes and looks at me. She growls in warning, and I stop walking and just watch her.
“Zodiac, I know you can hear me. Please, you can’t stay here.” I try to make her talk to me, but she turns her head away from me. I sigh as I move closer when she stands up and I will say this: she is big.
“You are such a pretty wolf.” I try to appeal to her wolf, who c***s her head to the side and is watching me. I hold my hand out to her so she can sniff me. This is going to be hard for her wolf, too.
“I’m not a dog. But you are wise to be cautious of me. Zodiac will talk to you once she has calmed down. Being back here is bringing old memories to her. Memories that nearly destroyed her. I hope you understand.” She says and I do understand I understand all too well what those memories are.
Not just what Lucas did to her, but what happened to her when she was just a pup. I know all of this because I was there. I was right here when it happened to her.
“What is your name?” I ask her as she allows me to sit closer to her.
“Ċarnage. What is your wolf called alpha Renko?”Ċarnage asks and I smile at her.
“Zeus, and you don’t call me alpha. I am your mate, so you don’t need to use my title.” I tell her softly and she nods her head once before laying back down and placing her head back on her paws. Ċarnage has the same scar on her face as Zodiac does.
We sit like this for a while when she shifts back, and Zodiac is looking at me. Her good eye fixed on me. She sits up, her black hair brushing the top of her slender shoulders.
“I will never forgive you for doing this. For claiming me, for bringing me back here. You think I will roll over and be the perfect little luna? Well, you are dead wrong. I am no mate and I don’t need or want one. You will do well to remember that alpha.” She spits the title full of venom.
“No matter, you are here now and you will take your place. I know this is hard for you and I’m …”
“Don’t. I don’t need your sympathy. I know what I am. I know why I’m like this. The bond can f**k off. You may have claimed me alpha, but don’t think for one millisecond that I will comply with you or this pack. I would rather see you all burn.” She says as she stands and walks to the door and pulls it open. The smell of dust hits me.
“Good night alpha douchebag.” She says as she closes the door. I sigh and it is taking everything in me to go rip the door off the hinges and drag her out kicking and screaming.
“Mate is feisty and fierce. Give her time, Ren.” Zeus says and I sigh before I turn and walk away. Giving one look at the house and I can see her watching from the kitchen window. I shake my head and walk back to the pack house.
She will give in sooner or later, but I won’t give up. Even if I have to command her. But I don’t want to do that either. I need to gain her trust. I need to show her I’m nothing like Lucas. Ok, who am I kiddin? I’m so much f*****g worse.
After all, it was me who destroyed her life, the black wolf she has been searching for. The one who scarred her. I’m the cause of everything bad that has happened to her. But with Selene as my witness, I will make this right somehow.
