Zodiac POV.
I follow behind the SUV on my Ducati Panigale. I don't look around as I focus on the task at hand. This pack has searched for me. I’m not easy to find.
Only a select few know how to find me. According to the intel, the River Wood Pack has a pack of rogues that are staying not far from their borders, but they are worried they may attack. The pack warriors have killed a few rogues over recent months. But no one from this group.
But I’m not convinced the rogues currently setting up camp are of the evil variety. I know from doing this for six years that not all rogues are bad. Some alphas kill first, then ask questions. That is why I’m here to make sure that these rogues pose no threat.
The SUV rolls through a gate and continues on as we pass houses and I can tell this pack has money. The pack is like a small town and is surrounded by woodland. The SUV crawls to a stop in front of the pack house.
Some of the members have come to see the newcomer. Well, they will be disappointed I’m nothing special. I shut the bike off and swing my leg over and climb off. The alpha couple and their small children are waiting on the top step with their beta pair. I chuckle as I see the faces of the pups. They so want to play in the snow. Meghan would have been the same. I shake that thought away.
I unclip the chin strap and pull the helmet off my head, letting my shoulder length black hair fall free before I hold the helmet in my hand. A hear gasps and whispers. I pay them no mind. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before.
“Alpha, luna. Let me introduce to you the rogue hunter Berserker.” Gamma Trevor says as he bows.
The luna gasps seeing my face and I smirk as I look at her. She is beautiful, her long platinum blonde hair lays in waves down her back. Her blue eyes are wide as she grips her mates hand tighter.
“Welcome Berserker to the River Wood Pack. I am alpha Colten Reed and this is my luna and mate Eliza Reed. You must be tired from your journey. Please come inside and warm yourself and eat. Then we can discuss why I have been looking for you.” The alpha says and I step forward.
He is handsome, but then again, he is a typical alpha male with his imposing, towering height and impressive muscles. I fight the need to roll my eyes as I walk up the steps, as he moves aside and I walk past him and his mate. She whimpers, knowing she is letting a dangerous predator into her home. She is right to fear me. If Ċarnage wanted to, she would easily slaughter everyone here and pick her teeth with their bones.
I’m led through the packhouse. I don’t bother looking around because every packhouse is the damn same. Big, grand, dripping in opulence. I walk to a seat at the set dining table. Ċarnage hums in her approval at the spread that has been put out for us. Roast chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, and desserts. I, however, don’t wait to be told to sit, I just do. No one can command me. I’m too strong.
“Let’s eat.” The alpha says, and I reach for the meat. Mashed potatoes, vegetables, and gravy. I dig in like a ravenous beast. Table etiquette is out of the window as I tear into the meat with my hands and teeth.
“Savage.” I hear the luna mumble under her breath as she delicately cuts into her chicken. I drop the chicken leg on my plate and glare at her.
“Yeah, I’m a savage. But it’s this savage that your mate was searching for. So will all due respect luna. Watch your tongue, or you will see how savage I can be.” I say with a growl, and she whimpers. As her mate growls at me and I look at him and he gulps.
“Your luna needs to learn to show respect to others just because she is a luna she has no right to insult me. So keep her in check or you can deal with this situation yourself.” I say, and he glares at me before he looks at his luna. I can tell they are mind linking each other by the glazed look in their eyes and she looks down at her plate. Ċarnage chuckles in my head.
“Man, she is entitled. She wouldn’t survive an hour out there in the wild.”Ċarnage tells me and I chuckle because yeah, she wouldn’t.
“So tell me about these rogues.” I ask and the alpha looks at me and he explains to me that the rogues have set up camp not far from the border, but not on the border. He is right to be cautious.
“How many are there?” I ask, and he looks at his beta, who looks at me.
“Fifty of them. They have pups with them.” He says, and I lean back in my chair and suck on my teeth.
“They are not going to do anything. When rogues travel in groups that big. Especially with pups. They are simply looking for a place to rest before they continue on their travels. These rogues don’t pose a threat. I will go and speak with them. However, I heard you were attacked a few months ago.” I say to the beta and he looks relieved at what I’m saying.
“How would you know they won’t attack?” The luna asks and I look at her.
“Tell me. If you were travelling with your pups, just resting and recharging, would you lead an attack with your pups next to you?” I ask her as she looks at her babies, who are making mountains out of their mashed potato. I smile at this, then quickly school my expression.
“No, I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t risk them.” She says and I smirk at her and nod my head once.
“Exactly, so they are no threat. So that tells us they have no intention of doing that. Now tell me during the last attack you had, was there a black wolf leading them?” I ask because that is who I’m looking for.
“No, the rogues that attacked where mangy looking, usual colours of mud brown with red eyes.”
Not him then.
After I have eaten, I am shown where the rogues have set up camp. I enter the camp, because even though I am not a rogue, I am like them.
A lone wolf will steer clear of others. I don’t smell like a rogue. Most rogues smell of death, sulphur, and decay. Others smell like a pack, each has their own scent. Me however, I have no scent at all.
“It’s Berserker, everyone it’s Berserker.” Someone shouts, and I smile as a woman runs towards me. I engulf her in a hug.
“Why are you here?” I smile at her question when she takes me in. Caroline looks me over and I roll my eyes at her.
“Could ask you the same? I was bought here to exterminate you. Good thing I’m in a good mood.” I say as we walk further into the centre of the campsite. The rogues greet me and the pups run around my feet, laughing and giggling.
“Oh goddess no, you know us Zodiac. We are just travelling back from the temple of Selene.” Caroline tells me and I nod my head at her words. These rogues are like gypsies. They travel but keep to themselves. I have known Caroline for at least four years. I was under attack when she intervened and helped. I was injured, and she nursed me back to health, and we became close.
“Oh, we heard a rumour on the road to here.” She tells me and I hum not really interested in gossip. As I watch the pups playing in the snow.
“Well, are you going to ask what it was about?” she asks, nudging me with her shoulder. I sigh in exasperation.
“Fine, tell me Caroline. What did you hear?” I ask in mock excitement, and she chuckles.
“You’re the worst, you know that? Anyhow, according to the rumours. Your old pack, Silverclaw has a new alpha. He challenged the old alpha, killing him on the day his son was meant to take the alpha position.” I stop in my tracks and look at her, and she is smirking at me. Caroline knows my story. She is a witch hybrid and told me she could heal my scars. But I was not interested in that.
“Oh, really. I suppose miracles do happen. What happened to my ex mate Lucas?” I ask preying karma got him for what he did to me.
“He is being kept as a prisoner in the pack house by the new alpha Renko Lovelace.” She swoons, and I shake my head at her.
“Couldn’t happen to a better wolf. Anyway, you can’t stay here. The River Wood pack is getting antsy. When are you moving on?” I say, changing the subject.
“In two days, we had to rest. The pups were getting tired. But we will be gone in two days. What about you? Where will you go?” Caroline asks and I shake my head.
“No idea. I’m still looking for that black wolf rogue. So until I find him and kill him, I don’t know.” I say to her after a while. I say my goodbyes and walk back to the River Wood pack.
“Did you speak to them?” Alpha Colten asks and I nod my head.
“They are on their way back from visiting the temple of Selene. They will be gone in two days. I will stay until they leave, but tell your warriors they mean no harm.” I tell him and he breathes a breath of relief.
Two days later, I sit on my motorbike and watch as the rogues move on. Caroline nods her head at me and I nod back before I turn the bike on with my saddle bag filled with cash. I ride away, no closer to finding that bastard.
