Chapter1
Sophia’s POV
“I would not be getting married to you, I don’t think I want to spend the rest of my life with someone like you..”
His words echoed in my head as I stared in shock, my hands trembling as I tried to pull myself together. I had been anticipating the day he would marry me which was in two days irrespective of his earlier behaviors but this?
This was far more than I had even reasoned but why all of a sudden?
The pain lingered in the back of my throat as I gazed at the ground, anger surging through my veins when a notification popped on my phone, I checked to see if it was a reminder to attend the annual moon festival.
I had lost every ounce of will to go anywhere, my fiancé had just called off our wedding because he had his eyes on another woman, what’s crazier than that?
I summoned the strength to not let out a tear, I can’t let this pain get the best of me.
What hurt me the most was that I had given. So much of my time with him, trying to achieve goals together all for it to end up in vain, and to make it all worse, most people knew about our marriage and many other high-status elites in the country will be attending in two days. How would I cancel it? I’m quite sure he doesn’t care about that and would heap it all on me.
My parents had warned me when they noticed how oddly he was acting when he got involved with Zara but I had soothed them and hoped he only had eyes for me but that was a blatant lie.
Getting home I dragged my feet inside wanting to hang in the comfort of my home but the air reminded me of him, everywhere I went he had something to do about it and I resented it.
The night's air was soothing and eased me a little as the moon shone brightly which was my favorite part of today. I leaned back and closed my eyes, trying to shut out the pain I was feeling.
“Ma’am we’ve arrived.” My driver’s voice shot through my ears, slowly opening my eyes I glanced at the entrance of the hall and sighed, the paparazzi were already waiting to capture whoever it was that came on the red carpet, and for once I felt a pang of distress, not wanting to step out but I had no other option. This was going to be their newest gossip.
‘Sophia Montel spotted without her Fiancé’
Although it doesn’t sound too bad, I hated it, I hated the fact that they made it their point of duty to find a single duly in me without knowing the full details
One of the security men opened the sort and I got out, plastering a beautiful smile on my face, trying not to show a hint of discomfort or annoyance I was feeling as the lights flashed nearly blinding me.
“Where is your fiancé, Miss Sophia?”
“You’re without Mr. Vaulaf today.”
I remained quiet to their questions before making my way inside before they would engulf me with more annoying questions.
“Sophia.” I heard a familiar voice call out to me and turned to see Zara smiling while walking towards me. “I’m glad you could make it here.”
“And what’s this about?” I tried to hide my irritation but it slowly seeped out from my tone.
“Benny had told me he wasn’t able to go with you earlier because I had asked him to follow me shopping, just wanted to apologize.” Her eyes fluttered as she gazed at me, although she seemed so frail and fragile, I could tell she was disgusting and wicked inside.
“Is that all?” I arched my brows, ready to leave, there was no point causing any ruckus here.
“And sorry about your breakup.” She giggled, her eyes sparkled in joy seeing my distraught look while she sipped a glass of wine in her hand before walking away leaving me stunned. It felt even worse than when Ben had told me, it felt fresh as if the realization had just hit me.
“Are you okay Sophia?” My mom's voice erupted, jerking me out of the trance I was in. I slowly turned around to look at her, trying to hold a smile but failing woefully.
“Certainly.” I nodded. “Why?” I arched my brows darting my gaze from her to the other guests in the hall either listening or talking to one another. Refreshing each other with the latest topic or crisis going on.
“What is this that I have heard? I warned you not to go ahead but you were so lovesick you had to be fooled by that lowlife.” She folded her arms on her shoulders, her face contorted into a frown as she approached me, she had dressed somewhat similar to me but she was thicker and had more curves that I had wondered why I hadn’t genetically inherited.
“What is it this time mom, there’s no point complaining when the wedding is in—-“ I paused when she showed me the picture on her phone, I was dumbfounded and stood there in absolute shock.
“Do you have to go this far to ruin your reputation? Honey, you can do better than this.” Her frown dissipated, replaced with a worried look.
What I saw was a headline portraying Zara and Benjamin holding hands like lovers when his wedding is in a few days—- I mean there’s no wedding but that’s what the public thinks.
“We can just cover it up—-“
“Another desperate attempt to shield him? Do you even think of yourself, Sophia?” My mom hissed harshly at me, I was about to defend myself when the sound of glass clinking on the platform caught the attention of everyone.
“Good evening our dear esteemed guests, I’m deeply pleased to have you all here to engage in the moon festival,” Benjamin announced with a big smile on his face as his gaze shifted around the room.
I felt a knot in my stomach and the unnerving ache in my chest by just gazing at him.
“Well on this special day, I would like to introduce the special woman in my life…. Although we have spent a little time knowing each other, it would be an honor to spend my whole life with you.”
I could feel the gazes of people on me, expecting me to be the one he would call or perhaps they knew about his affair with Zara and were looking down on me with pity, I couldn’t tell.
“Darling please come.” He stretched his hands towards me, I froze staring at him in surprise, wondering if he wanted to fake our relationship, and reached my hands towards him, his eyes gazed down at me in disdain as our hands almost met but in a flash, his hand darted to another direction holding on to someone beside me.
I felt a part of humiliation hit me as I saw Zara reach out to him with a beaming smile on her face as she gently made her way up the stairs.
“Everyone meet the woman I would be marrying.”
What?
