“What you’re doing for Elena is really nice…” Lily said as she interlaced her hand with mine. “You just met her but you’ve been nothing but kind to her.”
My eyes were fixed on the water that flowed through the fountain.
“Yeah, she’s your daughter,” I replied, swallowing my guilt. “And I’ll take care of anybody you love,” I added, stroking her head as she lay her head on my chest.
“This means a lot to me.”
“It’s nothing, Lily. You don’t have to keep thanking me all the time,” I said with a humorless chuckle.
