Avery’s P.O.V.

The pain in my chest was so dense that I wanted to clutch my chest hard and didn’t have any strength in my legs to stay stand. Jacob screamed and fell to the ground on his knees while clutching his chest. Tears spilled out of his eyes while he looked at me with disbelief.

I am not a cruel person, but I am vengeful. I couldn’t describe how happy I was while watching him writhing in pain. Emma was an innocent and timid personality, but not me. They wanted to ruin Emma completely by announcing this pathetic reason, but I am not Emma.

“Accept the rejection, Jacob,” I demanded in a commanding tone, suppressing all the pain and hurt. A hand snaked around my upper chest, and my back was pressed to a strong muscular chest. It was weird, but I felt my strength coming back to my body.

“Accept the rejection, Jacob,” I commanded him again in the same tone, leaning on the support. “You are killing him. How could you do this?” Sandra yelled at me in a cracked tone, holding Jacob tightly into her embrace.

“If he can play with my life, my emotions, my dignity, with the mate bond, then why can’t I let him feel what I felt all these years?” I retorted immediately in the same cold and commanding tone. Her eyes widened more in shock.

“I…. I…. J… Jacob Bennett….. a… accept yo.. your re… jection, E…. Emma Harper,” Jacob uttered painfully in a choked voice. I felt that someone knocked all the air out of my lungs when the intensity of the pain increased inside my chest.

I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs because of the pain…. It… it was unbearable…. I felt like dying once again… the overwhelming desperation of saving my life when I was trying hard to get out of the fire before my death overpowered me once again.

“You are stronger than this, my love…. don’t let them see your weakness now.” Suddenly a magnetic low voice rang in my ear, and I shuddered hard. The voice had a weird soothing effect on my dying body, and I felt relaxed.

“Jacob….. Jacob…. Somebody help him.” I slowly lifted my eyes and saw Sandra yelling aloud for help while holding Jacob’s unconscious body into her embrace. “Weak…. Pathetic,” I spat in disdain and closed my eyes again. I heard a low chuckle, and it was when I registered that something was out of line here.

“Take him to the hospital.” I heard my father ordering in a cold tone, but I didn’t pay attention to him. I slowly craned my neck backward and blinked while looking at his handsome face. He was now looking at me with amusement, but boy…… his smile was a killing machine…..

He slowly removed his hand from my body and took me towards the chairs. “Sit for a while,” he instructed me, and I just followed his command like a puppet. I didn’t know if it was Emma’s instinct or if I was tired, but I slumped my body on the chair as if I had no strength in my body as soon as he removed my hand from his.

“This is quite an interesting arrangement, Alpha William. You managed your pack so well.” I furrowed my brows curiously and looked at Prince Xavier who was now confronting my father.

The corner of my mouth twitched when I saw my father lowering his head in shame. “I don’t know how you will address this issue, Alpha William, but I can’t take this matter lightly. I have to report this issue here to the king,” Prince Xavier said further in a stoic tone, and my heart skipped a beat.

Alpha King….. Marcus King…… 27 years old…. Unmated….. cruel, cunning, and ruthless…….

This was what I learned from Emma’s memories. “I…. I assure you, Prince Xavier, th.. that I will solve this issue seriously,” my father stammered hard in fear, making me scoff internally this time. “Let’s take a short break and after that, we will proceed with engagement. Before that…. Send someone to pack Emma’s thing. She will leave with me for the royal pack right after the engagement,” Prince Xavier announced, and I snapped my head towards him in astonishment.

I am not his mate, and I am just a mere transaction in this deal. He didn’t need to take me with him after the engagement. “B… but, my prince,” my father protested while stammering hard, but Xavier raised his hand in the air in a domineering way.

I could see his side face as he was standing a little ahead of me. He had a cold face, radiating an aura of royalty through his body language. I didn’t know much about this world, but he was indeed the most handsome, aloof, and domineering presence in the hall right now.

“After witnessing how you all treated her, and what she is facing here…. I don’t think that I can trust you with her safety, Alpha William. Our alliance is one thing, and as the second prince of our world, her safety is the second thing and my first priority. We will contact you after discussing today’s events with my brother later,” Xavier said to my father in a cold tone, and I felt a shiver passing through all the nerves in my body with every word coming out of his mouth. No doubt, I was attracted to him.

I scolded myself while I gave a pep talk to me inside my heart. Yeah… I needed to control my emotions and thoughts. I was betrayed because I trusted some people so easily. There was no way that I was going to commit the same mistake again.

He came back and sat down on the next chair beside me, and took a deep breath. “Thanks for your help,” I whispered while lowering my eyes shyly.

What the heck?????? Why I am shy?

“Your welcome, princess…. But I must say that you are much stronger and more interesting than what I heard about you. Despite the fact that you don’t have your wolf, you are different and quite stronger than your sister or any other she-wolf present here,” he praised me, and I just tilted my head, narrowing my eyes on him to guess whether he was genuinely praising me, or mocking me for not having a wolf.

“I am sincere in my words, princess. I am a prince,” he continued, and I chuckled. “Thanks for your appreciation, my prince,” I thanked her in a bit teasing tone. He immediately raised his brows in surprise but chuckled in the end. I giggled and looked in the other direction. I flinched while jerking my head backward when my father's murderous gaze met my gaze.

“Here…. have a drink,” Xavier said to me in a low tone, making me move my gaze back to him. I saw a glass of wine in front of me. “Thanks,” I thanked him immediately and took the glass. It was when I realized that I was not only thirsty, but my throat was also dry.

He chuckled again, but didn’t say a word. We both drank some wine silently while looking around. I scoffed internally when I noticed everyone’s gaze on me. Some were curious. Some were filled with disdain. Some were cold….. but nothing matters to me now.

I am sure that Emma knew each of them, but I don’t. I didn’t have any intention of getting to know them either. “Are you sure that you want to take me with you?” I asked him in a low voice while craning my neck towards him after a few sips.

“Definitely…. There is no way that I will leave you behind after the engagement to suffer their wrath,” he answered me in a calm but cold tone. I nodded while pursing my lips into a thin line and I looked around one more time.

“If I am not wrong…. I am the only one who is wolf-less, right?” I asked him in the same tone while lowering my lashes. “Yeah,” he answered me with a sigh this time. I bit my inner cheek to stop myself from interrogating him, but I was really curious about his protective behavior towards me, his early statement, and the treatment that Emma suffered all these years.

“Then why didn’t the palace take any action against their treatment towards me all these years?” I asked him in an accusing tone this time, looking straight into his eyes. He sighed and looked around. “This is exactly what I want to know, princess. I guess I have a lot of work to do after going back, and my father and brother have a lot to explain in this matter,” he answered me in a serious tone.

I nodded in response and took a sip of wine from my glass while looking in front of me at a blank spot. There was now nothing going on inside my mind. Rejecting Jacob was not the only way to avenge Emma. The whole pack was her culprit, and now I was determined to put them in their places. “Shall we proceed with the engagement?” Xavier asked me when I was about to finish my glass. I gulped down the content in my mouth and nodded in agreement.

"Let's finish this so that I can go to sleep. I am sleepy," I answered him, and I tried to muffle my yawn by putting my hand on my mouth. I heard a chuckle once again, and I frowned in embarrassment this time. For god sake.... this is an engagement...... my engagement....
