Xavier’s P.O.V.
I didn’t know what was special about this girl, but she piqued my interest in her. They said that she was weak, but what I felt from her aura was everything but weak. She had no wolf, but Blaze, my wolf, sensed something amiss here.
“Why are you staring at me like this?” she asked me with a scowl on her face. I chuckled and looked out of the window this time. We were on our way to the royal pack. This was almost a four-hour journey by car. My warriors wanted to have a run to the pack, but we all took cars because of Emma.
“You are really weird,” she muttered under her breath, and the corners of my mouth curled up. I didn’t want this engagement at the first place. I didn’t know why my father wanted me to marry this wolf-less girl, the weakest link in our world. My father proposed this marriage alliance. I was against sacrificing myself but acted out of my character as soon as she appeared in front of me.
I sighed internally once again and leaned my head backward and rested on the edge of the backrest of the seat while closing my eyes. I didn’t know how I would be supposed to tell Emma what was waiting for her there. She had a strong will and determination, but she was still fragile. The way she collapsed on my chest after rejecting that prick…. She showed her vulnerability to me only, and it scared the hell out of me.
How would I face her after revealing those bitter truths of our lives? We all have some skeletons hidden deep inside our closets, and I also had mine. How would she react after finding those closets? She was still a pure girl with a fragile heart.
“We won’t let anything happen to her, boy. She is ours to protect,” Blaze, my wolf, growled at the back of my mind. He was now giving me a headache. Ever since she appeared in front of us, he has been acting weird. She wasn’t our mate, but he was obsessed with and protective of her as hell.
“What’s wrong with you?” I flinched when she suddenly yelled at me. I growled while snapping towards her. “You are fidgeting, growling, and making so many movements, disturbing not only me but the driver too,” she yelled at me in frustration, and I narrowed my eyes on her.
For Goddess sake, I am a royal blood…. The prince… yet she had this courage to yell at me? Was she so brave or too naïve to understand the consequences of her actions?
I clenched my fists tightly, trying hard to suppress my anger. I couldn’t hurt her, but it was unbearable to endure any kind of disrespect, being a royal, it was tougher than any other high-ranking werewolf.
“Tell me something about your family," she suddenly asked me in a calm tone after some time. I sighed and jerked my head lightly. “Why do you want to know?” I asked her calmly this time. “Huh? Are you real?” she asked me sarcastically, and I glared hard at her.
“I am engaged to you. In a few months, we will be husband and wife. I… I know that weddings are just a business alliance in your world as you people prefer your mate over your wife or husband, but if I have to stay by your side as your wife, I must know about your family and other important things, right?” she questioned me while explaining some weird stuff, making me frown.
“You are saying as if you are not from this world,” I mocked her and she glared hard this time. This girl really has some real guts to mess with royal blood. “You forgot that I am no wolf. Things don’t work for me in the same way or else I would have recognized Jacob as my mate three years ago,” she replied to me sarcastically while rolling her eyes.
I pursed my lips into a thin line while staring at her blankly this time. Yeah…. She can’t recognize her mate because of the absence of her wolf. Still I didn’t want to picture her with that prick. My possessiveness once again started surfacing in my eyes.
“What’s with this look?” she asked while shrinking her nose in confusion. I didn’t answer her but I looked out of the window once again while putting a finger on my lips absentmindedly. “Hey… I am asking you something, Xavier,” she asked me again while yelling lightly, but I completely ignored her this time.
“Fine…. It’s not like I am dying to know everything about you and your family. One day you will find your mate, and I will be on my way,’ she muttered, but with her statement, something snapped inside me. The next second, I was holding the back of her head tightly, making her shriek in horror. Her eyes widened with a lingering fear in them.
“Whether I will find my mate or not, Emma….. you will not go away from me.,” I threatened her in a cold tone, looking straight into her eyes. She didn’t blink but looked at me with a same gaze. “Don’t ever think about leaving me. Now be a good girl that you are and brace yourself to stay with me as my wife. Understand?” I asked her coldly, but she didn’t answer me.
“Understand?” I asked her again while tightening my grip on her head. “Yeah… yeah,” she answered me in a fearful tone. Tears filled her eyes at the same time. She was afraid of me. Of course, she should, but she was stubborn as hell. I could see how hard she was trying to fight her fear. She didn’t let even a drop escape from her eyes.
I was pissed because she talked about leaving me. What the hell was wrong with me? She was nothing but my nominal wife. How could I be so possessive towards her, in less than a day? She meant nothing to me. Then I was so riled up, and why was my heart a mess right now?
I released her from my grip when my best friend, who was now sitting on the passenger’s seat at the front, cleared his throat. “We reached, my prince,” he informed me in a low and respectful tone. A very low whimper escaped her lips, and her head hit the glass behind her. She hissed while holding the back of her head where she hit the glass, making me look at her immediately in worry, but she didn’t look at me. It was clear that she hit her head hard on the window, but she was still trying to keep the facade of bravery on her face.
She opened the door while holding her head and get out of the car. “You are doomed,” Blazed threatened me angrily, and before I could say a word to him, he retreated and blocked me. She was now standing outside with Vincent, my best friend.
I closed my eyes and tried to suppress the pain that I was feeling in my chest. I shouldn’t have manhandled her like this. I was once again completely out of character. I hated men who manhandle women. Now, I was one of those b****ds. How could I do this to her? She was not my mate. I wasn’t in love with her. Yet I was pissed by the idea of her leaving me and heck… to be with any other male.
I took a few deep breaths and slowly got out of the car after opening the door on my side. I walked to her side and glanced at her once again. She still had her head high, but she was still angry with me. “Let’s go,” I murmured, and I started walking gloomily.
“This way, Ms. Harper,” Vincent said to her gently and respectfully. “Call me, Emma, Mr.,” she trailed and once again I was pissed. “Vincent ….. Vincent Beckham… I am gamma of this pack,” Vincent introduced himself to her in the same respectful tone. “And my best friend,” I informed in a pissed tone.
There was silence among us as we ascended the stairs to enter the palace's lobby. “So…. Vincent, right?” she asked him again, starting a conversation with him ….. again…. “Yes, Ms. Harper.” He answered him with the same tone.
“Just call me, Emma…. Vincent….. it’s not like I am some kind of royalty that you need to bow in front of me all the time.” She said to him with a hint of sarcasm in her tone. I huffed and was about to scold her once again when my whole body froze. I looked at Vincent, and his eyes went cold immediately.
“Xavier,” I craned my neck in her direction and saw her running towards me while smiling widely. My heart almost stopped beating in fear as my eyes widened in horror. I felt sweat on my back immediately, dreading the next thing that was going to happen after this. She pounced on me, wrapping her hands around my neck, and kissed me passionately. “I miss you,” she whispered while kissing me, holding me tightly by my neck.
