Chapter 7: Sick King

1747 Words
Leticia’s POV The moment we arrived at the pack, I felt as if I could breathe again. Being in the same space as three hot, mad, and very dangerous Lycans was something I didn’t wish on anyone. Not even my worst enemy. The moment Kayden stopped the car, I almost bolted out, but Kartein stopped me. His warm, huge hand wrapped around mine. “Where are you going, peach?” I raised an eyebrow. “Peach?” I questioned, trying not to sound offended. Although I am. He chuckled, with that low voice of his… it made my heart flutter. “You smell like peaches,” he explained, as if that were a compliment. I frowned. “I do not smell like peaches,” I said. He leaned even closer, his lips inches away from mine. I had to gulp and try to scurry away, but my back soon hit the door, and I had nowhere else to go. His hand lifted, I flinched and closed my eyes, only to feel warm fingertips tuck a curl of hair behind my ear. What the… I opened my eyes and was met with a pair of deep blue eyes staring back at me. My mouth went dry. He might be a Lycan, but he is handsome. Very, very handsome. “I… uh… excuse me,” I said, trying to squirm away from his embrace, but this man only leaned even closer, invading my personal space. His lips turned into a lopsided smirk. When he was about to touch my face, the door opened, and I fell back. Again, I closed my eyes to face the impact, but the pain never came. Instead, another pair of warm arms wrapped around me. This time, I didn’t want to open my eyes, so I only took a little peek, only to be met with golden eyes staring back at me. Well, at least it isn’t Captain Asshole. Kayden has the worst temper of the three, but Cirrus is no better. He was so cheerful at first, but now he is staring daggers at Kartein. “Why were you so close?” He questioned. Kartein's smile fell. “Same reason as you,” he countered. They stared at each other for a long while; their auras began to slip, and the omium grew even more intense, making it hard to breathe. I cleared my throat to keep from coughing, but it only got worse. I can’t hold any longer. “What the f**k do you two think you are doing?” A grave voice asked, sending a chill down my spine. Kartein’s hand settled on my leg, and it made goosebumps appear all over my body. He isn’t doing anything, but the mere contact of his warm hand against the fabric of my pants is enough. I want him to remember what personal space is, but the tension in the air is so thick I’m afraid to speak up. “Kartein, keep your hands off her. Cirrus, help her stand up before you move so she doesn’t make a fool of himself,” Kayden ordered. The two Lycans stiffened at first. I’m not sure how hierarchy works, but I’m sure they are at the same level, so it doesn’t make sense that he is treating them like his lackeys. “In case you have forgotten, Kayden,” Kartein said, his voice was so deep it didn’t seem human. “We don’t follow your orders.” I decided to stay as still as a corpse until their pissing contest is done. I haven’t looked at Kayden once, but I swear, I can feel him smirk. He is enjoying this. “You don’t, but in case you have forgotten, that she-wolf was sold to me,” he pointed out, his voice so flat it reminded me of what I am to him. For a second, I almost forgot. I’m not a person; to Kayden, I’m just a transaction. However, this remark didn’t seem to sit well with Kartein and Cirrus. Lycans with a bit of conscience? Yeah, right. “Be prepared, you will meet the current King soon,” Aria suddenly interrupted. I was already prepared for that. They told me I was sold as the “King's distraction,” not his son’s. The fact that Kayden came means the man is pretty busy or doesn’t consider the trip to Black Fang worthy of his time. Not that I’m complaining. Cirrus helped me stand up, while Kartein retracted his hands from my legs. Once I touched the ground, I looked up and realized we hadn’t stopped by the main house. A huge, five-story building, very fancy and modern, stood right before us, but I wasn't looking at the front door. Besides, Kayden was walking in another direction, to a smaller building, more like a suite, behind it, covered by some trees. Uh… is this the part where they murder me? I thought, but then remembered the crude remark Kayden made about me being sold to them, and it would be a waste to murder someone as soon as they arrive. “Can you tell me why we have to stay here?” I asked my wolf. “We could run and—” “No, Letty. I’ll tell you everything, step by step, for now just follow that man,” She ordered, her voice was clear and left no room for discussion. “Kartein, Cirrus, return to your packs,” Kayden ordered, which of course didn’t sit well with the Lycans. “Leticia here has to meet my father, and you both know that will take a while.” Kartein’s jaw clenched, he looked like he was ready to snap at Kayden, but Cirrus, his eyes fell, and at that moment I realized… No, no. Wait— What am I thinking? Even the Moon Goddess punished the Lycans because of what they did. If they can’t find a way to break their curse, they will disappear. They turned around and got in the car. I kept staring until the car vanished from my line of sight, only to be roughly manhandled by the only Lycan who stayed behind. Kayden Sinclair. “Move, wolf.” his voice was cold and commanding, those purple eyes glaring at me as if I were a piece of dirt. If it weren’t for Aria, who is so adamant about me staying here, I would have bolted already. I had to find a way back to my friend, to save her from Black Fang. His grip on my arm tightened just enough to remind me who held the power here, but not so much that it hurt. Yet. I stumbled forward a step, my heart pounding in my chest as I shot him a glare over my shoulder. “Easy there, Your Highness,” I muttered under my breath, yanking my arm free. Or trying to. His fingers didn’t budge, and the heat from his skin seeped through my sleeve, making my wolf stir restlessly inside me. “Keep talking back, and I’ll make sure your introduction to my father is even more... memorable.” He released me then, but not before giving a little shove that propelled me toward the smaller building. I rubbed my arm where his hand had been, trying to ignore the lingering tingle. We approached the door, and Kayden didn’t bother knocking. He just pushed it open. Inside, the space was dimly lit, with plush rugs underfoot and walls lined with bookshelves. It would have looked nice, except that the putrid stench of the omium was strong and lingered throughout the place. I had to cover my nose to stop myself from gagging. Kayden turned to look at me, one eyebrow quirked as if analyzing my behavior. “Deep breaths, Letty. I’ll help you.” Aria was the only way I could push through the dizziness. It didn’t take long, perhaps a couple of minutes, and during that time, Kayden carefully waited. I don’t understand him. He is so cold and rude, so why is he trying to be considera— “Move,” he shoved me again into one of the rooms. Forget it. Still an asshole. When I went inside, a man was sitting on the bed. He… looked so thin that if it weren’t for the same color of eyes as Kayden, I would have thought he was a poor rogue or mistreated wolf. The black fog was so dense around him that I don’t understand how he is able to breathe. “Then can’t smell it,” Aria explained. “Only we can.” Oh… that made sense. “Hello,” he greeted me. Unlike his assholy son, his voice was warm, deep, almost like a hug. “Leticia, right? It is a pleasure to meet you.” I gulped. I never expected this man to be so kind. Everyone says he is like a demon; the Sinclair family is feared all over the country. “I-It i-is a pleasure to meet you, S-sir,” I stuttered like a damn i***t. I blame it on the fact that he caught me off guard. Kayden snorted. “Excuse her, father. Leticia here doesn’t know how to behave in front of a King. She is quite ignorant, you see.” My face turned red with embarrassment. I now realize I should have called him Your Majesty. The worst part is I can’t even counter because what he said is true. I have zero education. I expected the man to sigh, shake his head, and agree with his son. But instead, he frowned. “Kayden Sinclair. This is not how a future King should behave. Leticia is not ignorant out of her own volition, so instead of mocking her, you should be finding ways to help her,” He growled. Even in that frail body, his voice came out strong. Wow… he is different from the rumors. “He is a good man, such a pity that he has less than a year to live.” “Excuse me?!” I asked Aria with a shriek. “The omium in his body has accumulated to the point that even if he doesn’t use his power anymore, he will still die,” She explained. I… “That is, unless someone starts purifying it,” She finished. I gulped. Now I know why Aria wanted me to come here. She wants me to cure the sick King.
