Chapter 4
I wasn’t nervous in the slightest being in a chopper. I have been in one before and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. However, I was nervous flying off with a Mafia princess, and I was starting to second guess my choices.
“Don’t worry, Frederico is an amazing pilot, I am Kenzie, I thought I would come with, in case you were a nervous traveller” she says kindly.
“I like flying, I guess I am still a bit shell shocked that the Mafia is still a real thing” I say cautiously, not wanting to offend her.
“If you are worried we are going to kidnap you or something, dont be. You can call your dad and ask him about Santiago Carruso, our dad’s know each other. It was your dad who got Grace in touch with us. We don’t touch women and children, well unless they are really evil, that is” she tells me reassuringly.
“OK, I would like to hear more about that, but first, where are we going?” I ask.
“Shoreham, my familia has a ranch there, but dont worry, you will be staying with Grace, who has her own place in the town” Kenzie says.
Kenzie then went on to tell me about how my pops had gotten in touch with her father when he found a bloody and beaten Grace. They had met before when her father had helped them take down some traffickers. They had kept each other’s contacts in case they needed it in the future.
She then went on to tell me about her ranch and family, including her other identity in the rodeo circuit. I thought there was something familiar about her.
She was nothing like what I thought she would be. She acted like a normal everyday person.
She only had a week until her next contest, but she decided to train at home for it so she could help me out. I felt safe with her, and it was reassuring to know my pops knew them and trusted them enough to ask them to help Grace.
I told her about what had happened in the club house, and she laughed and gleefully said “way to go, girl” When I got to the part of the club girl almost amputating his co.ck. I was still upset, but that bit did put a small smile on my face.
I had been looking forward to finding Gabe’s mom, but now I was worried. I knew I would have to tell her I was carrying her grandchild and that I had gone there to get away from him to clear my head. It wasn’t a conversation I was looking forward to at all.
Kenzie managed to keep me distracted by talking to me about various things over the 1h45m flight. I was glad to be distracted, and the time went by quickly. She also had snacks for me, too, which was good because I hadn't thought about eating at all.
The nerves kicked in again as we made our way by car to Grace’s home. It was a charming little house, complete with a white picket fence. 3 bedrooms, so she would have room for me, as they were only using 2 of them.
Kenzie walked ahead of me and gave the door a knock before going right in. A beautiful middle-aged blonde woman was in the kitchen preparing food. I knew this was Grace as I could see pieces of Gabe and Mike in her features.
“Oh my dear, I swear you get more beautiful every time I see you” she said, wrapping Kenzie in a hug.
“Hi auntie Grace, I have someone I would like you to meet, and I was hoping she could stay with you for a little while” Kenzie said as she hugged her back.
“Hello dear, I am Grace” Grace said, giving me a hug.
“It is lovely to meet you, Grace. I am Luci” I reply.
“Luci. Are you John and Sally’s girl? You look just like her” she says as she looks me over in surprise.
“I am ma’am”
“None of that ma’am, you will make me feel old” she says with a chuckle. “Luci you stay as long as you need. It is the least I can do after what John did for me. Have a seat, I have just made some ice tea, and I have some cookies, we can chat about why you are here” Grace says, ushering us to sit down.
I start at the beginning, from Mike and I being best friends. She has tears in her eyes as I tell her as many good things as I can about her sons. Then I told her about Daggers dislike of me and what I walked in on before leaving.
“That bastard, Clyde has been poisoning those boys' minds. I wouldn’t have left if I had any choice, and I knew I couldn’t take the boys with me. I needed to protect Ariel from Clyde” she says with anger and sadness. I see she kept up with the angel theme. It was nice, a way to connect all of her children.
“I have to say neither Mike nor Gabe thought you were at fault. They never believed what their father said” I tell her, hoping it soothes her somewhat.
“I have missed them terribly over the years, I always hoped that someday I would have the chance to see them and at least explain my side of things. I will hold off from calling them just in case it leads them to you. I won’t put you or my first grandchild at risk” she tells me.
“I wouldn’t worry, Digit is a troglodyte compared to Catalina and I. He will never be able to trace us, so whenever you are ready call them, don’t hold back for me, you have all waited long enough for this day” I say giving her a smile.
“He was always a bit average, but compared to Clyde, he is a computer genius. That is why Clyde believes in him so much. I am surprised he isn’t in the jail yet” Grace says, shaking her head.
“I am pretty sure that is only because they have a few cops and a judge in their pocket” I reply.
“Oh look at the time, Graham and Ariel will be back any minute. Are you staying to eat?” Grace asks Kenzie as she goes to check on the food.
“I would love to, but mum will kill me if I don’t go home and eat with her. I will be over one night before I leave, I promise” Kenzie says before bidding us goodbye.
I help getting the table set for us, as Grace finishes off the food, and like it was timed to perfection, a tall dark, handsome man in a suit steps in with a beautiful girl who looks like a clone of her mother. They look a bit surprised to see me there.
“This is Luci. She will be staying with us for a while. This is my husband Graham and my daughter Ariel. Now let’s eat, and then we can do question time” Grace says, introducing us.
Without argument, they greet me and sit down, as if it is normal for a random girl to appear and live with them.
I find out that Graham is a lawyer who works mostly with the Gambino Mafia. That’s how they met. Although Grace was Dagger’s old lady, he had never felt the need to put a ring on it, so she was free to move on with her life with Graham.
I also discovered that Ariel wanted to follow in her step dad’s footsteps and was going to university after the summer to study law. She didn’t think of her sperm donor as her father, Graham was the only dad she would acknowledge.
She was, however, curious about her brothers, and had hoped one day that she would have them in her life if they were not like their dad.
I was able to tell her stories of Mike and I growing up together, and then some of Gabe from the last few years, since I got close to him. She didn’t want to hear anything about Dagger, other than what I had to mention as part of my story.
I had many pictures on my phone covering the years that I shared with them. All in all, it was a nice evening together, after we got past the hard stuff.
Ariel was not quite ready to let her brothers know about her, I think she was still trying to digest it all, but they were all excited about my pregnancy and being a part of my sons life.
Graham was also very welcoming to me. He knew how my dad helped Grace, and he was grateful for that and happy to protect me for as long as I needed it.
It made me feel sad that Mike and even Gabe had missed out on this loving family as they grew up. Dagger, with his pride and ego, had hurt many people, and I hope now he was finally realising what he lost, and regretted it all.
