Everett continued to stare at me in confusion. He stood in front of me, his eyebrows knitted but behind him, I could also see Louisa’s reaction. There’s a pain in her eyes that breaks my heart, the pain of a wife robbed of the love of her life. I wanted to step closer to her and explain everything, my words threatening to spill to clear out any misunderstanding but I knew I couldn’t. Henry had taught me that we needed the dust to settle before we sweep it off; it’s exactly what’s needed to be done in this situation.
Finally, Everett opened his mouth to speak and finally respond to the words I have just uttered. He stared at me with disbelief shining brightly in his eyes. “Did you just tell me you killed my grandfather?”
