Chapter 12

The car, finally, made a stop. It went with a loud screech of the wheels dragging on the concrete road. Dave was safe. The car did not even touch him. They all neared, and they saw him in his own blood. They rushed him to hospital. “Now, you see what you did? You see what you did, Dion?!” Felicia would not let him walk out on them at the hospital. He wanted to abandon all of them there. “You are so lucky that the boy lives. You could have had him killed, damnit!” The older brother sat on the bench waiting on the doctor to bring news that Dave was ready to see him now. He sat there, anxious and impatient.” The doctor finally came, “He’s not so bad. He fractured his right arm. It should repair in six weeks or so. And you may need to be very gentle with him, make sure he avoids sudden movements. He hit on his head very badly. He will experience severe headaches from time to time. Just make sure he eats all the necessary foods and takes his medication. Nurse Abigail will hand you the list of the foods I highly recommend for the young patient.” “And we will see to it that he gets the best care possible, doctor,” Felicia had said. “I also want you to be patient with him. His healing may take longer than you may expect or it may be quicker, depending on his environment.” “We will love him, doctor.” “You may see him, now. He may not talk very much, he is in pain right now. Seems the doses are taking time to melt in his body.” “Thank you so much, doctor.” “I’m just doing my job,” and he went off to another one of his duties. Dion would not bring himself to the room where Dave was being kept. Felicia did not feel the need to convince him otherwise. She walked into the room and found the older brother there already. “He won’t talk,” the boy said. Felicia brought herself closer, “The doctor said, he is in pain. Talking won’t be easy.” “So, he will talk again?” “He will talk again.” Dave had a thick and hard plaster round his arm and his head was woven in a bandage. “You scared me, Dave. Don’t do that again or else I will break you myself,” he held his brother’s hand. Felicia saw the two connect. She felt like she was to blame. She felt that she was the reason behind everything. She felt like she shouldn’t have tried to help those kids when they were cold and wet in the street. “They’re letting you go later on today. I will take care of you.” The boy said, “I will beg for as much money as I can, and I will find work somehow. We’ll be fine. In fact, let me go start hustling now. Maybe we can rent a room by tonight—” “No,” Felicia said, “don’t worry yourself. He will pay for everything. In fact, we are going to his house. It’s big enough for all of us.” The boy smiled, “Are you sure?” “You’ll have your own rooms and… and we’ll buy you much cleaner clothes.” The boy could hug the lady, but he saw how clean she was, and it clicked to him that she would never appreciate having him all over her. Even though, she was being nice and kind, he could still feel some sense of disgust coming from the lady. He was just glad that she tried enough to hide it. When Felicia and the boy decided to get going, they found that Dion was already gone. He left them there. She called on a cab. She wanted to get the patient new clothes. She decided to buy for both of them. They bought food afterwards. They went back to the hospital to get Dave. While Dave was being assisted to get discharged from the hospital, Felicia appreciated having to talk to the boy. “My name is Vincent.” “Have you ever met your mother?” “I heard she gave me away way before I was born. She decided she was not ready to raise a child. Hence, she had given me up for adoption but the parents she chose suddenly changed their minds soon after I was born. Mother couldn’t accept me. The orphan home is the place to dump unwanted children. As for my father, I heard he rejected me the moment I was conceived—on the very first week of my mother’s pregnancy.” “I don’t know which parent in their right mind would reject such a handsome child.” Vincent did blush, “I am handsome, aren’t I? I constantly found myself running away from the girls back at the orphan home.” “They were troubling you?” “Ow, terribly.” Felicia found him funny. She began wondering how he really looked under that dirt. Dion was not the good kind of thrilled when he got home and found the boys chilled on his couch. They were enjoying the porridge Felicia had made for them. They were clean, dressed, covered in a blanket and they watched the cartoon program on the TV. “Kids?” he felt disgust lither down his body. “Why, on world, are there kids in my house!” Now the boys took notice of him. Felicia rushed into the room. “Dion!” she cried, “Now you mind your tone when talking to them! Sit down there and join the happy family!” Dion could not bring himself to that level. He went and pulled her out of the room. The boys saw him aggressive. That got them uncomfortable. “Do you think he will hurt her?” Dave had asked. His pain was a bit numb by now. He was using his left arm to do everything. He had even forgotten that his right arm was useless now. “I hope not.” “Mother Sonto used be hurt by her husband. She was not happy every day. You need to help her. You couldn’t help Mother Sonto, but at least help her.”
