Jameson POV
Alpha Terrance had the phone on speaker so that we could hear what was being said.
“Hello, is this Alpha Terrance?” came a male voice through the speaker.
“Yes, it is,” he replied.
“Alpha Terrance, my name is Tevin Morano,” the man informed him. “I’m King Sebastien’s assistant. I see here that you have a matter that you needed to speak with him about?”
I was honestly a little disappointed that it wasn’t the king on the other end of the line, but at least we were getting closer to actually reaching him.
“Yes, I do,” Alpha Terrance replied. “Is he available now?”
“No, I’m afraid he isn’t,” Tevin told him. “He’s on a business trip for a couple more days. Is there something I can help you with?”
Alpha Terrance looked at us, and Jonathan and I both shook our heads. We still weren’t sure if there was someone at the castle in partnership with Arthur, and we weren’t ready to trust anyone at the castle with any more information than necessary except for the king and queen themselves.
“I’m afraid this matter is more of a personal one,” Alpha Terrance told Tevin. “Do you have any way of getting a message to him? It’s pretty important, and I know he’ll want to know as soon as possible.”
“Yes, of course,” Tevin said. “I can send him a message and ask him to reach out to you tomorrow. Will that be all right with you?”
Jonathan and I nodded.
“Yes,” Alpha Terrance replied. “Tomorrow will be fine. Do you think he can call around, say, 2:30?”
“Hold on, let me check his itinerary for tomorrow,” Tevin responded. We heard the clicking of keys in the background, and then he spoke again. “It looks like he’s scheduled to be in a meeting with some pack officials then. Will 3:30 work?”
Jonathan and I nodded again, and Alpha Terrance told him that would be fine. With that, he said goodbye to the king’s assistant and ended the call.
“Well,” Anthony spoke up, “it was a bit disappointing that he wasn’t available tonight, but at least we know we’ll be able to speak to him tomorrow.”
“That’s actually better,” I replied. “At least this way, we have a little time to prepare what we want to say to him.”
Anthony nodded. “Smart thinking. I can tell you, though, he’s going to be very excited to learn that you boys have been found and you’re both alive and safe. He may be skeptical at first, though. They’ve had a lot of false leads over the years. Have you boys thought about how you might be able to prove to him that you are actually his sons?”
I nodded. “I don’t know if Jonathan knows this, but I had our mom make copies of the adoption papers with Arthur’s writing on it. I brought some of those copies with me. I didn’t think to bring them with me tonight, but I do have them back and Linda and Dave’s in my suitcase.”
Laura smiled at me. “That’s good, then. That’ll definitely help to convince him, if you can send him copies or at least a picture of the papers. I’m sure he knows what Arthur’s handwriting looks like.”
“And you said that you have an address where you send snail mail, right?” I asked her.
She nodded. “I do. But unfortunately, it’s just a PO box.”
“I have the address for the castle,” Anthony spoke up. “Well, that’s assuming that it’s still there. But they had Jessup, the warlock that works with the packs, put a spell on it a long time ago so that if you look it up on Google Earth or some such thing, you only see an empty field. I suppose we could check it though – if it shows something besides an empty field, we know that the castle has been moved.”
“How would we know he hasn’t just changed it to something besides the empty field?” Jonathan asked.
“That’s not Jessup’s normal style,” Ana spoke for the first time since we’d come into Alpha Terrance’s office. “Once he chooses the image he wants people to see, he doesn’t generally change it. He told me once that it’s annoying to have to remove one spell just to put on another.”
“Will we get to meet this Jessup?” Jonathan asked. “I’ve heard quite a bit about him.”
Anthony nodded. “He’s actually supposed to be here tomorrow, to check some of the shields he’s put up for us. Maybe we could speak to him about teleporting you two straight to the castle.”
‘No,’ Donovan piped up. ‘I’m not sure why, but I think we need to drive to the castle. There’s something telling me, we need to drive there.’
I started to speak up, but Jonathan beat me to it, echoing basically what Donovan had just told me. “Thanks, but no,” he told Anthony. “Damien is telling me there’s something pulling at him, telling him that we need to drive ourselves there.”
I nodded in agreement. “Donovan is saying the same.”
Anthony smiled. “Not a problem. Our beasts generally know more about those things than we human counterparts do anyway. If I had to guess what could possibly be calling to both of them, it would be that your mate is likely somewhere between here and the castle.”
I perked up at that. “Do you really think so?”
Anthony nodded, and I saw the others smile in agreement. “There’s nothing that pulls at our wolves more than our mates, and I would assume it’s the same with Lycans,” Anthony replied. “Even before you meet them, there’s a bond there, and that bond often guides us until we actually meet. It’s fascinating, how the Moon Goddess designed the mate bond.”
“It sounds like it’s a very intense bond,” I observed.
This time, Ana spoke up for the first time since the meeting began. “It really is,” she told us. “My bond with Terrance is part of what activated my powers, besides the fact that it can act as a GPS type thing when one of us can’t find the other.”
“Powers?” Jonathan asked.
She nodded. “I’m the Sugilite Wolf, which I honestly hadn’t even heard of before I found out I was mated to Terrance.”
“So what exactly are you able to do?” I asked her.
“Well, there’s a few things,” she told us. “One is, I have the power of healing. Unfortunately, it’s taken me some time to become stronger at it, so I’m still not as strong as I hopefully will be one day, but I’m getting better at it. Um, let’s see. Watch this.”
She grabbed a letter opener from Alpha Terrance’s desk, and, before any of us could even blink, she stabbed it into her palm. I felt my eyes go wide in shock, and beside me, I felt Jonathan jerk back a little. I also noticed that there was very little reaction from the others in the room. They must’ve been used to this sort of thing.
Ana noticed our reactions and smiled at us. “Sorry,” she apologized. “I should’ve warned you. Anyhow, watch this.”
She held out her hand, showing us the wound on her palm. Then she waved her other hand over the wound, and it completely faded away, leaving smooth skin that showed no sign of having even been cut. I was so focused on her hand that I almost missed the fact that her eyes had begun to glow purple.
I was impressed. “Wow. That’s awesome!” I told her. “Can you heal others, or just yourself? And do your eyes always glow purple like that when you’re using your powers?”
She nodded. “Yes, I can heal others and yes, my eyes do always glow like that when using my powers,” she told us. “Allow me to show you something. Baby, do you mind?” she asked Terrance.
He smiled at her, and I could see the love that he had for her shining through with just that one smile. “Of course, baby,” he told her. “I trust you.”
She took his hand, palm up, and used the letter opener to slice his palm. Then, just as she’d done to herself, she waved a hand over his hand and the cut immediately disappeared.
Jonathan was just as fascinated as I was. “That’s amazing,” he told her. “What else can you do?”
“The thing that I’m probably the strongest at right now is, I’m able to help keep others calm andtheir anxiety down,” she told us. She stared intensely at Jonathan and I, and her eyes began glowing again. With seconds, I felt a sense of calm wash over me, washing away all the nervousness I was already feeling about the next day’s phone call.
Beside me, I noticed Jonathan looked more relaxed as well.
Jonathan nodded to her. “That’s a really handy power to have,” he told her. “What else can you do?”
She smiled at us. “I’m really still learning, so there’s probably things I don’t know about yet. But one of the things I know I can do it this.” With that, she turned her hand out, palm up, and raised her arm. Terrance’s phone, which had been sitting on his desk, slowly began to float upwards.
Terrance reached out and snatched the phone away. “Hey, now, not my phone! I just got it, and I’m surprised the pups haven’t cracked the screen already.”
She laughed, then looked back at us, “Like I said, I’m sure there’s probably other powers I haven’t learned about yet, but I’m getting there. But you get the gist of it.”
I nodded. “We do. And I’d love to see even though more of your powers after you get them perfected.”
She smiled. “I’d like that.”
We chatted about a few other things before deciding there was really not much else we could do before the phone call the next day.
As we were leaving the packhouse, I turned to Jonathan. “Bro,” I asked him, “Are you as nervous about tomorrow as I am?”
He nodded. “More nervous than I’ve ever been about anything,” he told me. “And that’s saying a lot.”
