Jonathan POV
Shortly after going into the dining room, a pretty woman with her blonde hair swept up into a bun walked into the dining room and straight over to Anthony, who was still waiting in line to fix his plate. She smiled as she kissed him in greeting. Then, with Anthony’s arms still around her, she turned to greet us.
“Hello,” she said with a warm smile. “I’m Laura, Anthony’s mate and Alpha Terrance’s mom.”
I stuck my hand out to her first. “Hello, Laura. I’m Jonathan,” I replied, shaking her hand.
“And I’m Jameson,” Jameson added, shaking her hand after I did.
“It’s nice to meet both of you,” she told us. “Terrance has told us so much about you!”
“Don’t believe a word of it,” I joked, and everyone laughed.
“So,” Laura continued as she reached for a plate, “have you had any luck with your research?”
“We’ve found a few things, but not nearly as much as we’d like,” Jameson replied. “We’re hoping Anthony can fill in some blanks for us.”
She smiled, first at Anthony then back at us. “I’m sure he will. Do you mind if I sit in on your meeting?”
Jameson and I looked at each other, then over to Anthony before looking back at Laura. I shrugged. “Sure, if you want.”
“I’ve been to the castle once or twice with Anthony,” she told us. “Queen Havannah and I used to talk some over the years, but we’ve drifted apart a lot over the years. We used to offer each other support and advice about raising twins. But once you boys disappeared, it became too difficult for her to talk about. So we slowly drifted apart. Hopefully, once all of this is figured out, she and I can become friends again.”
Laura smiled. “Well, as I said, we haven’t spoken in quite awhile, but when I knew her, she was sweet, sassy, intelligent, and had a heart of gold. She often told me that she was grateful that the position she was in gave her the opportunity to help a lot of people. She was and continues to be an amazing leader. But I’ve heard that since you boys were taken, she’s been struggling pretty badly with depression and anxiety. I’ve tried a few times to reach out to her, to let her know that I’m still here for her, that I still care, but she’s never responded. And since she and the king change their phone numbers every few years, I eventually had to resort to snail mail, but I still never got a response from her.”
Jameson nodded his head. “I could see where having your child or children kidnapped would cause some horrendous mental anguish. I would imagine it would be a struggle just to get out of bed every day.”
Laura smiled sadly. “Yes, it would be. But hopefully, she’s got some hope now because she knows you boys will have gotten your Lycans now that you’re eighteen. And she probably knows that your Lycans will be able to lead you home.”
Anthony spoke up then. “We should probably finish discussing this after dinner,” he suggested, glancing around us. “Never know who may be listening in.”
He was right. We had been keeping our voices low for just that reason, but werewolf – and apparently, Lycan – hearing was much, much better than a human’s hearing, and anyone nearby might have been able to overhear us if they tried hard enough.
Laura smiled at us again. “So, Terrance tells me the two of you grew up in California. Are you guys into surfing and the like?”
With that, we began talking about our upbringing as humans, and I found myself telling them about my first time surfing. They were all laughing by the time I finished telling them how many times I had fallen off of the board.
“I had more bruises that night than I could count, but it was still fun,” I told them.
Anthony grinned at me. “I’ve tried my hand at surfing a time or two,” he told me. “Found out real quick I’m about as good at surfing as I am at skiing – horrible.”
We all laughed.
By then, we were all pretty much done eating and it was time to adjourn to Alpha Terrance’s office.
‘Are you as nervous about this as I am?’ Jameson asked via mind link.
I took a deep breath. ‘Yes, but I’m honestly more ex hesitated for a second, looking over at my brother. “You ready?” I said aloud.
He grinned at me. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” he replied. “Are you?”
I grinned back, trying my best to cover the nerves behind it. Jameson could know how nervous I was, since we were basically like one soul in two bodies, but I didn’t want anyone else knowing how nervous I was. “I’m ready to grace our biological parents with our presence,” I joked. “The sooner the better!”
He facepalmed, and I snorted out a laugh as we walked into the office. It was time to get this party started.
We were the last ones to walk into the office, and I closed the door behind us. As Anthony had stated before, you could never be too sure about who was listening in.
“Have a seat,” Alpha Terrance told us from where he was already seated behind his desk. Luna Ana was in his lap, with her head on his chest. There was another desk chair sitting right beside them that I’m assuming was where she was meant to sit, but she seemed pretty comfortable where she was.
There was a loveseat to the right of his desk where his parents were sitting. Jameson and I took the two leather chairs directly in front of his desk.
“So,” Anthony started out, “Just to let you both know, Laura and I have already tried the last phone numbers we had for the king and queen and none of them work. As Laura told you earlier, they change their phone numbers at least every two years. They do this because they don’t want Arthur finding out any way of getting in touch with them. They’ve always had strong hunches that he was the one that caused your disappearances, but they were never able to definitively prove it. They had security cameras up, even back then, but because Arthur was a member of the royal family, he had access to everything – passwords, security codes, all of it. He managed to make sure you two disappeared while the security system was, and I quote, ‘down for maintenance.’ He even made sure that there was no recording of him going into the security room that day. They did finally catch him conspiring to murder King Sebastien and take the throne, because the king himself overheard a conversation he was having with someone. They were never able to determine who exactly he was talking to – he immediately hung up the phone when King Sebastien entered the room, and this was before caller ID was so widely used, so King Sebastien was unable to tell who he’d been talking to.”
“Couldn’t he just check with the phone company and find out?” Jameson asked.
Anthony sighed. “He tried, but by then the only thing he could find out was that it was a prepaid phone, and the person had obviously got rid of it by then. They were never able to locate the phone or the person that had been using it.”
“Hey, Dad?” Alpha Terrance interrupted. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but look at this.” He turned his computer around so that we could all see. “I know you said that the king and queen change phone numbers frequently, but what about email addresses? It looks like this one here was saved to the pack’s email account three years ago. I haven’t had to contact them since becoming Alpha, so I don’t know if this is right or now. Does this look right?”
Anthony leaned over to get a closer look. “I think so, but I’m not sure,” he replied. “Can you try sending an email to that address, see if we get any response?”
Alpha Terrance nodded. “I sure can. What should I say?”
Anthony looked thoughtful. “Well, you don’t want to say anything about Jameson and Jonathan being here,” he replied. “We have no way of knowing who’s manning their account. Maybe you could say there’s some sort of urgent matter that you need the king’s attention for? That’s technically the truth.”
Alpha Terrance nodded and, after a moment of thinking, he started typing. After a few minutes, he said, “Ok, guys, this is what I’ve got. Tell me what you think. To whom it may concern, My name is Alpha Terrance, of the Whispering Pines Pack. I have a matter that I am not able to freely discuss via email, that needs the king’s attention. If you don’t mind, please give me a call regarding this. Thank you, Alpha Terrance.” He looked up at us. “I’ve including the phone number to the packhouse, and my own personal cell phone number. Am I missing anything?”
All of us shook our heads.
“How long do you think it might take him to respond?” I asked Anthony. “Is he generally pretty quick to respond?”
Anthony nodded. “Usually he is, but since it’s a little later than I’ve emailed him before, he may not get it until in the morning. But we’ll see.”
“So,” I addressed him, “while we wait, where exactly is the kingdom?”
“It’s outside of a small town called Ogunquit, Maine,” he replied. “That is, if they haven’t moved it. There was talk several years ago of moving it all into Canada, to keep Arthur from coming back and causing trouble. But they could have just decided to increase security, which is another option they were discussing. At the time, it was being debated about which would be more cost effective.”
I admit, I was a little surprised that they would even consider moving an entire kingdom just because of one person. Jameson piped up then, showing that he was feeling the same way.
“How is it that just one individual can cause so much trouble that they would consider moving the entire kingdom?” Jameson asked. “I mean, I get that he was suspected of kidnapping us, and that he was convicted of conspiring to kill our father, but moving an entire kingdom seems a bit extreme.”
Anthony nodded. “I can see where that would seem extreme. But you see, it wasn’t just the kingdom that King Sebastien was trying to protect. It seems that Arthur had developed a big crush on Queen Havanah, and when he was kicked out, he went crazy, making comments about how he was going to come back for her, that he believed she was in love with him instead of King Sebastien, things like that. Even though security around her was quadrupled, and Queen Havannah herself is actually a fierce warrior, King Sebastien still worried that Arthur would make good on those threats. So he was considering moving the kingdom to where Arthur wouldn’t be able to get to her.”
“Do you think she was into him that way?” I asked.
He shook his head. “No way. Your parents, unlike many of the royals, are actually each other’s fated mates, and anyone who’s around them for more than thirty seconds can see that they’re very much still in love, even after all these years. Arthur was delusional to think he even have a tiny chance to steal her away. However, Queen Havannah was against moving the kingdom, saying that many of their people have established lives there and have even gotten involved in the human community there. She didn’t feel that it was fair for them to have to uproot their lives just because of her.”
Jameson nodded. “That makes sense. I would probably think exactly like she did.”
It was right about then that Alpha Terrance’s phone started ringing. He pulled it out of his pocket and checked the ID.
“It’s a Maine number,” he said excitedly.
I immediately sat up straighter, as Jameson did beside me.
Anthony grinned at us, then at him. “Well, what’re you waiting for, son?” he asked. “Answer the phone.”
I couldn’t help but to think that a lot of our future could be riding on this call.
Alpha Terrance, who suddenly seemed as nervous as I felt, took a deep breath and swiped his finger across the screen to answer. “Hello?”
