Chapter 6 I pulled back the curtains in Ruoxie's room. She jumped, quickly tucking her feet under the blanket. "Le... Leticia." I told her to put her feet out, saying I needed to put some medicine on them. I slowly went over and sat on the edge of the bed. Ruoxie showed me her feet. They were covered in blisters, some of them looking pretty old. "Leticia, I'm sorry." I stopped, looking at her. She was looking down, saying she felt like a burden on me. "I've always been weak, and I've been a burden on you," Ruoxie added. I told her it wasn't true. "It's true, I'm a burden. Remember in high school? The entrance exam for the school you wanted to go to so you could go abroad? I got sick, and you couldn't go. It was all because of me," Ruoxie said sadly. I peeled off the plastic from the bandaids. "It was two days before the exam, and I changed my mind. Besides, if I wanted to take the exam, I could have done it online," I said, putting a bandaid on Ruoxie's wound. "You changed your mind?" Ruoxie repeated. She looked at me and asked why. "I remember you were preparing for it for three months before the actual exam," Ruoxie added. How could I tell her it was because of her that I changed my mind? I knew that if I left, Ruoxie would be left with no one to protect her, and more bullies would come after her. I held her hair and told her not to worry about it. "People change their minds all the time. It just depends on the situation," I said. I told her I would rub her feet so she could sleep soundly. Three months passed. Ruoxie and I were quickly getting used to life in City D. First, because there were people who helped us. Second, compared to the capital and our life as Yeraz, this place was quieter and more peaceful. Third, we were far away from danger. I noticed Ruoxie was changing, too. She was always smiling and telling me about the new friends she was making, our neighbors. She even said she suddenly had a lot of new moms and dads in this place. It didn't surprise me. Ruoxie was the kind of person who would be loved by everyone, as long as they weren't jealous or had bad intentions. I sold out my fish early, so I decided to head home. I was carrying my baskets when I saw a crowd of people gathered at the edge of a cliff. "What happened?" I asked. I set down my baskets and walked closer. "Someone fell out of a car. Looks like a stranger," one of the people said. "Did you call the police and an ambulance?" I asked. The old man said the main city was far away and that the car had been there since last night. The ambulance would take two hours to get there. "Scary. It looks like one of the cars that were chasing each other last night." I turned around. I heard them talking about how they saw cars chasing other the night before. They were going fast, heading out of City D. I saw a hand sticking out of the window. I stopped because I recognized the ring. I had seen it the night I was in the car with the guy who saved me from the club. "What are you doing?" I ignored the people's questions and tried to climb down the cliff. "Miss, it's dangerous! They might have a gun!" I grabbed onto rocks and grass to help me down. I winced when my hand scraped on a rock as I slipped. I didn't care. Once I got to the bottom, I went straight to the car and peered inside. I was shocked to see the guy from the club in the back seat. "Hey! Are you okay?" I asked. I was about to check his pulse when— I froze. I heard the click of a gun and felt something hard against my temple. Damn, I was so focused on seeing Mr. Hottie, I forgot he wasn't the only one in the car. "If you don't want to die... Stay away from him." I stopped. The voice sounded familiar. I raised my hands and slowly backed away. I turned around and saw the guy who saved Ruoxie. His head was bleeding, and his eyes were glazed over. His injuries looked worse than Mr. Hottie's in the back seat. "I... You?" He furrowed his brow and lowered the gun. I told him we were in City D. "I'm not a bad guy. I'll get you out of here." When he didn't answer, I forced open the backseat door and pulled Mr. Hottie out first. I checked to see if he was breathing. "Leticia!" Ruoxie yelled. I looked up and saw her, terrified, staring at me. "I'll go down—" "No! You might fall. Call Anthony. There are two people here who need help. Your bodyguard friend is here, too!" Ruoxie's eyes widened, and she shouted. She said she would get help right away. I went around to the other side and opened the driver's side door. The bodyguard had a wound on his left thigh and arm, and his head was bleeding, too. "I'm getting you out. I'll do my best to keep your wounds from getting worse," I said. He didn't seem to be able to answer because of the pain. I grabbed his arm to pull him out, but he swore. I let go because I realized his arm was probably broken and I might make his injury worse. "Let's wait for Ruoxie. I'm sure she knows what to do," I whispered. I remembered that Ruoxie had graduated from medical school and passed her nursing board exams. "Leticia! They're here!" Anthony and the whole frat arrived. "Master! We'll help!" They rushed down and helped Ruoxie, who was desperate to get down, especially since she knew the bodyguard was in bad shape.
