                Alani slowly woke up, a dull throbbing intruding into her dreams. She felt like she was sleeping in the warmest, coziest bed of her life, but something was knocking on her ribs. She snuggled deeper into her mattress trying to hold onto her dream and sniffed. Her mattress smelled so good. Deep, woodsy, and a little spicy. She really liked it. Suddenly Alani jolted to awareness, sending a spike of pain in her ribs. “Ooooohh!” she groaned. Kade roused sitting up, running his hands up and down her sides. “Are you ok sweetheart?” Alani looked at him and nodded. “I think the meds are starting to wear off though.” Kade nodded and reached over her grabbing her meds and the bottle of water he left last night. He dispensed a pill and gave it to her, passing her the water. When she swallowed, she laid back down. Huffing in annoyance that her pain disturbing her sleep and her apparent cuddle time with Kade. She whimpered as he inspected her ankle. He left for a moment then came back with an ice pack and what she assumed was a heater pad. “I’m going to unwrap your ankle, love. Then we’ll alternate icing and heating, okay?” She nodded. She could help but suck in her breath when he moved her foot. It really was in bad shape. It was the size of softball and bruising was evident. Kade clucked his tongue at the sight of it. He caressed her calf as he gingerly placed the ice pack on the offended area.

                Alani watched him with hooded eyes, in too much pain to think about acting on her desire for him. She was grateful for his tender care and it warmed a place in her heart she closed off. “Thank you Kade.” She whispered. He just smiled at her. HE asked if she was hungry, she said yes, then blushed. “What’s the matter?” he asked. “Do you think you could, um, help me to…” She trailed off, embarrassed that she needed his help for this. Kade got her meaning and carefully picked her up, taking care not to upset her ankle. Her ribs smarted, but she was okay with it. He set her next to the toilet and took his leave. She finished her business and slowly made her way to the sink to wash her hands. While in the bathroom, she remembered that she had a walking air cast boot stowed in the linen closet from when she broke her toe years ago. She put it on and pumped up the air to a suitable intensity. Immediately she felt so much better. Her ribs still killed her, but her foot felt better. She unwrapped her ribs to get a good look at them. Annalee was right. Alani was starting to color everywhere. Red and blue patches were becoming evident on her brown skin. Her ribs were the worst. Her left side completely black and blue, she assumed from where she slammed into the tree. Kade knocked on the ajar door, looking in. Seeing her at the sink he walked in. He paused when he saw her in her walking boot, raising a brow. “It’s from when I broke my toe.” Alani explained. He simply nodded, then continued to her holding her shirt up to examine her ribs. Her breath hitched at his touch. His eyes flickered to her, but he continued his observation of her ribs. He outlined the large bruise, causing goosebumps to rise on her skin. “What did you hit on your way down?” “A tree. It stopped me from falling the near vertical 8 feet the next leg of the trail.” Kade grunted and grabbed the ointment and rubbed it along the long scrape on her ribs.

                When he was done, he helped her walk to the bed to sit. “I ordered calzones from Maggio’s. I hope you like supreme.” “It’s my favorite.” As they got settled, they began to talk, negating work for now. “What’s it like being an alpha shifter?” Alani asked. Kade chuckled at the question. “It’s no different from being a human, I guess. I just have more added responsibility.” At her scoff he smiled. “Think of it as if I was a tribe leader or chief. I have the responsibility of taking care of the people in my tribe. I just have the added ability of turning myself into a wolf as well. It can be overwhelming at times, I won’t lie, but being an Alpha has been a role I’ve prepared for since birth.” “Do you enjoy it?” “Yes, immensely. I can’t say I worked hard for the pack when I was younger, but being handed this territory at the young age of 18, I’ve worked hard to make sure its people have been provided for. I have to admit, when My father took over the territory on the other side of the mountain, I was overwhelmed. Especially since it meant he was taking the cash flow to keep the town thriving. I was at a loss at what to do.” “Is that where Mountain Fall Pioneers comes in?” Alani asked. Kade nodded yes, excited to talk with his mate about his business, their business, once she was mated to him.

                “Yes and no. My original concept was just to advertise this place as a tourist destination, but the slump in the economy nixed the idea for me. Before I could even get the concept off the ground, investors backed out. Frustrated at it all, I did what I always do to wind down. I went kayaking. Only my kayak sprung a leak halfway through my ride. It was an expensive one too. It was supposed to be top of the line, but I’d gone through 3 that year so far and it was my fourth. It pretty much made a shitty day worse, but it also gave me an Idea. I wasn’t rough on my equipment, but I used it often. The constant moving and use through rough waters was too much for it. I'd started to think of ways to make it better. I began researching the most durable, water tight material that was out there. From there, I had a team create a kayak similar to the design I had, but with a few of my tweaks and improvements. And so, our flagship product Fall-Line Kayaks was born.” Alani smiled at him, proud of his accomplishments. “Can you really take it down a 15-foot waterfall?” “Yes. And it is awesome.” Alani giggled at that. “From the kayak, other concepts to make my favorite things better began to cross my mind. It ended up expanding to camping and outdoor equipment to sporting goods. The last 10 years have been a wild ride.” “What do you have planned for the future?” “Maybe re-vamping what we have, improving the things. Do you have any suggestions?” He asked smirking at her. Alani raised her brows. “Well now that you ask.” Kade laughed at that and listened to her ideas.

                Alani was actually a loyal customer of their brand. Her family used most of their items when it came to the outdoor excursions and trail rides for the lodge. “I have a good idea for your rinky-dink family tent.” “Rinky-dink! That is a top of the line nylon polymer tent! It’s water proof and wind resistant!” “And too small for an average family of 4. It’s also tedious to assemble and uncomfortable. Your other tents provide a measure of comfort, but even those could be improved, in my opinion. This is based on my experience as YOUR loyal consumer.” When Alani outlined her suggestions for improvement, Kade listened intently. She even went so far as to draw it out for him. His mate was smart and talented, he thought as he listened and watched her. Alani gave a comprehensive cut dry idea that he had to admit was smart. “You have any more innovative ideas in that pretty head of yours?” Alani blushed at that. “It was just a suggestion.” “A smart one that I have every intention to bringing to fruition. See, I knew you were the perfect assistant.” Alani giggled at that, feeling giddy at his praise. “And you’ll be the perfect person to help me test it.” She looked at him then, finding his face close to hers. “Do you always test out your products?” She asked. “Yes. We can make a day of it; camping trip?” His face leaned closer. “What do you say?” He whispered. His breath feathering her lips. “It’s a date.” He kissed her then and Alani felt the heat envelope her again. The man was her drug. His presence made her dizzy, his kiss obliterated her senses. Kade couldn’t help but touch her, kiss her. Alani intrigued and impressed him at every turn. It was next to impossible to keep his hands off of her. “Alani. Suddenly the doorbell rang. “That ought to be the calzones.” Before he left Alani asked if she could leave bed and rest downstairs in front of the fire and the TV. He went back, helped her put on her sweatpants and walking boot, then carried her downstairs. He set her on the couch and opened the door. To his surprise, it was his brother, Mateo, and Michael with the calzones in hand. “You owe me for these.” Said his brother after he handed him the food. “How’d you get it anyway?” Kade asked. “We were doing takeout at Maggio’s. They were slammed and I heard them say your name. I asked Maria if it was for you and told her to add it to our order and we’d take it to you.” “Then I don’t owe you jack-s**t. Thanks for being a good Samaritan.” Kade laughed at his brothers grumble.

They made their way to the living room, where Alani had taken her boot off and propped her foot up. Her eyes widened at the sight of the 3 other huge males that filled her quaint little home. They’d all sprawled in different areas of her living room with their foods. Alani looked to Kade and he explained what happened. She just smiled and nodded greeting his family. They asked how she was feeling and she blushed, saying fine. Michael lifted a brow at Kade who ignored him. “What are you watching?” Mateo asked, watching the screen queue up Alani’s choice of movie. “The Fifth Element.” She startled as they all groaned and Kade laughed. “What? It’s my favorite movie!” “It’s mine too.” Kade said. The guys complained how he always made them watch this, making Alani laugh. They all settled in soon and ate their food, making commentary and laughing at the funny parts. By the end, Alani was asleep, laid back against Kade. He took her empty food box, picked her up, and put her to bed, rousing her briefly to make sure she took he medication. When she was settled, he made his way back down the stairs.

He came back to his brother and Mateo giving him a slow applause and Michael looking on with amusement. “What now?” “We can smell you all over her, and her all over you.” Luke said.  “So. I’ve been caring for her all day.” Luke scoffed at that, but made no comment. As they cleaned, Kade noticed that Mateo seemed off. “Mateo. Are you okay?” He asked. Mateo paused. He looked at Kade, then Luke and Michael. “What is it, bro?” Michael asked. “Um, ok. I have something to tell you and it’s going to sound absolutely bat-s**t crazy but it’s been bothering me for the last couple of weeks.” Mateo said. When they looked at him concerned, He said the last thing they were ever expecting. “I don’t think that Dani is my real mother.” They stared at him before Kade exclaimed “What the actual f**k?”
