What to do when someone is egging you on doing something? Should you respond in kind as the individual wants you to or remain calm and unaffected?

I curled my fingers in both hands while Zen’s eyes locked with mine under the gauzy cover. My foot rose swiftly for a front kick, to remove his limb from the door. He was quick to catch my foot though, and I leaped instead, giving him a back kick in the chest. He staggered but didn’t fall to the floor. Without smiling, he dusted off his hard wide chest that was covered by his armored clothing, which I realized now. The shiny cloth was something that was cut or stab proof, though it was not making someone in it totally invincible as the forceful kick
