I sat in the driver's seat of my car, staring blankly as Jacob's men roamed about the scene, trying to make sense of what happened. Samara's body had long since been transported to the pack's morgue. I drew my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around my body. My lycan and I were still on high alert after the incidence.
“Jacob… what happened?”
My head snapped up as I saw Kamilla walking towards Jacob and for some reason I saw red.
This is all her fault!!!
The killing began just before she showed up.
I jumped to my feet, charging towards her as she placed a hand on Jacob's arm, rubbing slowly as she spoke.
“This is all your fault!” I growled, coming to a stop in front of her. She frowned, glancing between Jacob and I.
“Adelaide, Samara was like a friend to me.” she whispered softly, I let out a scoff not buying her act.
“Oh she’s definitely your friend, why else would you two meet at the dead of night?”
Her eyes widened and her eyes darted to Jacob who looked confused. Capitalizing on her confusion, I forged on.
“I saw you that night, you gave her seeds and it had something to do with the braew.” I snapped. “So what happened? Did she not want to go along with your plan anymore? Is that why you decided to kill her?”
“ENOUGH” Jacob snapped, glaring at me. “Enough Adelaide, I know Kamilla and…”
“Oh yes, you know her so well, she’s been a close confidante, spare me the bullshit Jacob, she has you wrapped around her finger and now look at what happened! Samara’s dead!!” I screamed back. Kamilla placed a hand on his chest, turning to me.
“I have no hand in what happened to Samara and I mean you no harm Adelaide.” She whispered, taking a step forward. “How do you want me to prove that?”
I stared at her, to anyone, her words sounded honest but her weird scent told me otherwise, she was masquerading as a wolf and I would be damned if I believed a word from her mouth.
An idea came to my mind.
“Silver.”
Jacob stiffened next and turned to me, eyes narrowed.
“Are you insane?!”
I ignored him, taking a step closer to Kamilla.
“Werewolves are the only creatures affected by silver, so if you are one then the silver should burn you, if not…” I trailed off, the implications clear as day.
“Kamilla you don’t have to do anything.” Jacob growled, moving closer to her. She kept quiet, her eyes on the ground before she finally looked up at me.
“If this will stop the hostilities then I am willing to do whatever.” she whispered.
“Good.” I smirked, “I’m sure Jacob has some silver lying around.”
I turned to Jacob whose expression had darkened considerably.
“Well?” I prompted, Jacob clenched his jaw and nodded.
“Fine.”
**********
We stepped into Jacob’s office and he rounded his table, opening a drawer. He slipped on a pair of gloves before opening a small box, he lifted the lid and brought out a silver orb. My lycan immediately snarled at it, a natural reaction for any Lycan and werewolf.
“Kamilla, you don’t have to do this.” He stated, making me roll my eyes. She smiled and stepped up to him, grinning fondly.
“I know but I want to, anything to get Adelaide to like me.” She said, glancing at me, a strange twinkle in her eyes.
“Alright, then, just a touch, you don’t need to hold it.” He instructed, she nodded, steeling herself before pressing a finger to the ball. A hiss of pain escaped her lips and she cradled her hand to her chest. Jacob immediately placed the box away, taking her hand and soothing it.
“Satisfied?” He snapped, his voice cold. I swallowed hard, the shock that she was not immune to silver coursing through me. Her scent told me she wasn’t a wolf but everything else pointed to her being one. I swallowed hard and took a step back before leaving the office. There had to be something I was missing, something I had overlooked.
I made my way back to my room, closing the door behind me and sliding down to the floor.
Think Adelaide… think…
Yet nothing came to my mind, I was blank.
A wave of frustration and helplessness washed over me and for a long time, I felt completely conflicted.
*******
Towards the early morning, I made my way to the kitchen to get something to eat, having been holed up in my room for hours. Stepping into the kitchen, I came face to face with Jacob.
“We need to talk.”
I sighed and folded my arms across my chest.
“If this is about Kamilla, I am not shifting my stance, there is something wrong about her, I just know it.”
He let out a low growl, approaching me.
“You have no proof yet you still stick to your claim, do you have any idea how absurd that sounds?!” He snapped, making me glare at him.
“Absurd?! What is absurd is you supporting some woman instead of your mate!!!” I snapped back.
“If you think I am the type of lycan to support my mate just because she is my mate when I know she is in the wrong then you don’t know me.”
Something about his words hurt, I blinked back the tears, violently stamping down the pain.
“Clearly.”
With my appetite now gone, I turned about to leave when his voice made me stop.
“We are holding a memorial service for Samara tomorrow, I trust you will be on at least civil terms with Kamilla and her men in front of the entire pack.”
I didn’t bother to give him a reply before leaving the kitchen and heading up the stairs to my room. I grabbed my phone and sent a text to Liam.
Samara’s dead, her memorial’s tomorrow.
I tossed my phone to the side and sat, staring at the window, lost in thought, my finger unconsciously twisting the Luna ring on my finger.
*****
“Good morning Ms Adelaide.”
I groaned as Delilah drew the curtains apart, I placed the pillow over my face, not wanting to get out of bed but knowing I had responsibility as the Luna Prime.
“Good morning.” I replied, standing up. “Please pick out something for me to wear.”
“Okay ma’am.”
I headed to the bathroom, mentally preparing myself for the day ahead. I still didn’t understand how she reacted to the silver.
Think Adelaide… think…
Sighing, I showered and did my routine before heading back to the bedroom where Delilah had set out an elegant black gown. I got dressed and headed out of my room. I made my way down the stairs when voices stopped me in my tracks.
“I don’t appreciate your attempts on Jacob, it would be wise for you to stay away from him and Adelaide.”
It was Kamilla.
I frowned wondering who she was talking to.
“Oh please, that b***h came in here and stole my f*****g position if there is anyone that needs that warning it’s her.”
I rolled my eyes.
Of course it’s Olivia
“Besides who do you think you are to tell me what I can do and not do, you’re just some guest.”
“You’re right, I’m just a guest with considerable influence over Jacob, what do you think will happen if I express my discomfort with you waltzing into his cottage, his office whenever you please? What do you think he would do if I told him I don’t want you to have access to him anymore?”
I arched a brow, the subtle threat laced with her calm tone.
“Whatever.”
I felt Olivia stomping away before the front door slammed close. I continued down the stairs, rounding the corner just as Kamilla turned. She was dressed in a simple black gown, her locs pulled away from her face in a high ponytail that gave her a more youthful appearance than she already had.
“Good morning Adelaide.” She smiled. I didn’t answer, my eyes moving to her hand, to the bandaged finger.
“It’s fine, it doesn’t hurt as much.” she said, tucking her hand inside the pocket of her gown.
“Would you like breakfast, you didn’t eat dinner, I’m sure you must be starving.”
I shook my head.
“I’m not hungry.”
“You really should eat.” she insisted. I sighed, crossing my arms across my chest.
“If I’m hungry, I’ll go into the kitchen and cook.”
She laughed.
“Unless it’s Yorkshire pudding, I know you are an atrocious cook.”
What?
My eyes narrowed at her words and I took a step closer to her.
“Pardon me?”
Her eyes widened almost as if she realised what she had just said.
“How did you know that? Nobody here knows that.”
She took a step back, laughing nervously.
“J-just a lucky guess…”
“You’re lying.” I growled, she tok a step back.
“I- I should go.”
She turned and sped off. I stared at the spot she had just vacated, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
I shook my head and made my way out of the cottage, I walked to the venue where the crowd had gathered in the townsquare. They were all dressed in black in honour of Samara. The people parted as I walked through to Jacob who was talking with Tony. He turned to me as I approached them.
“Luna” Tony bowed, I smiled at him.
“Tony.”
I turned to Jacob who was staring at me, quietly, I stood next to him, staring at the crowd.
Tony cleared his throat, getting everyone’s attention before Jacob stepped forward and the memorial began.
*******************
“Adelaide?” I glanced over to see Liam, he was dressed in a black suit, his hair sleeked back. I forced a smile and made my way through the people to him.
“Liam.”
He pulled me into a hug.
“Are you okay?” he asked, stepping back. I nodded, blinking back tears.
“Can we go somewhere to talk?” I whispered, he nodded and I led him away from the centre. We walked down the cobbled street.
“Any idea who killed her?” He asked, I shook my head.
“I have no idea, but I think it's the creature and it slammed her into my car.” I explained, making him pause.
“What?!”
I nodded.
“I had dropped Delilah off and was driving home when something slammed into my car, it bounced back and I went looking for what had caused it and I… I found her curled up, her throat slit.”
“f**k Addie.” He murmured, pulling me into his arms. “I’m so sorry.” I wrapped my arms around him, letting out steady breaths.
“I don’t know what to do anymore Lili, I… I feel like I am running insane, I confronted Kamilla and even had her touch silver and it burned her, everything literally points to her being a wolf but her scent, her scent is off.”
“Hey, hey, it’s okay. How about this…”
He trailed off.
“Liam? What’s wrong?” I asked, he brushed past me and I turned to see him heading back towards the crowd.
“Liam?”
I called out but he didn’t reply.
“Liam!!!”
I ran after him as he shoved people aside, moving through the crowd until he came to a stop. I stopped beside him, grabbing his hand.
“What the hell Liam?”
His gaze was set.
“Liam?” I whispered, tugging on his hand.
“Mate,” He whispered. My heart slammed in my chest at his words, I followed his line of sight, shock slamming through me like a freight truck as I realised who he was looking at.
Kamilla.
No, No this cannot be happening.
“Mate” He repeated, stepping closer. His actions grabbing Kamilla and Jacob’s attention.
“Liam, this is insane, stop.” I hissed, he shrugged me off and made his way over to them, his eyes still on her. Jacob stepped in front of him.
“What’s going on?”
Liam glared at him, his eyes glowing with a hint of silver.
“Get out of my f*****g way.”
“Liam stop” I snapped, glancing at the crowd, relieved that they weren’t paying attention, I turned back to Liam and Jacob. Kamilla had also noticed the tense atmosphere and had walked closer.
“Jacob, what’s wrong?” she asked, placing a hand on his arm.
“Mate, you’re my mate.”
The world seemed to stop for Kamilla as her eyes widened, her lips parted in shock.
“N-No.. that’s not p-possible.” she stuttered, stumbling back before taking off, Liam sped after her immediately.
“Liam!!!” I called out, running after my cousin, Jacob, following behind.
We followed them to Jacob’s cottage, Liam was outside, pacing. He turned to us, the moment I stopped in front of him.
“I need to talk to her.” He demanded. I parted my lips to talk to her but Jacob beat me to it.
“Like hell you are.”
Liam glared at him.
“I don’t f*****g care if you’re an Alpha Prime, you will not keep me from my mate.”
I stepped in between them, placing a hand on Liam’s shoulder.
“You and your wolf need to calm down Lili.” I ordered, he turned to me, his eyes flickering from blue to silver back to blue.
“She’s my mate Addie, I need to talk to her.” he whined. I nodded, shoving away the shock that still coursed through me at the thought of Kamilla being his mate especially with me not knowing what she was.
“I understand but it’s clear this has come to a shock to both of you…”
“Which is why you should let me talk to her, I can explain everything.”
Jacob snorted.
“If you think I’ll let you anywhere near her then you’re insane.”
I glared at him.
“Don’t you dare talk to my cousin like that.” I spat, his expression darkened and he headed to the door, Liam following him. He turned and growled at him, Liam growled back, not intimidated.
“I’m not joking, you aren’t coming anywhere near her.” Jacob warned.
“You’re a f*****g hypocrite MontBlanc, what’s the difference between you and Charles Silverstone?”
Jacob turned to me, his eyes dark, the fury in them palpable.
“Unless you want to lose one more family member, you will get your runt of a cousin off my land.” He uttered, walking into the house and slamming the door behind him.
I turned to Liam who had resumed pacing.
“Liam…”
“I’m not leaving.” he growled “Not until I talk to her.”
I let out a sigh, a part of me knew how long he had waited to get a mate yet the other part of me couldn’t help but feel put off by who his mate turned out to be.
“I… are you sure she’s your mate? I mean we don’t even know if she’s a wolf.”
Liam growled.
“I don’t f*****g care.”
I raised a brow at his words.
“I understand that she’s your mate but there is still something very suspicious about her, I mean she doesn’t even smell like a wo…”
“FOR f***s SAKE ADELAIDE I DON’T GIVE A FLYING f**k!!! SHE’S MY MATE AND THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS, NOT SOME STUPID VENDETTA YOU HAVE AGAINST HER. SHE SMELLS LIKE A NORMAL f*****g WOLF, WHY DON’T YOU ACTUALLY RUN YOUR f*****g CONTINENT INSTEAD OF CHASING THINGS THAT ARE ALL IN YOUR HEAD”
I blinked, looking away from him as his words hit me, each word meeting their target.
“s**t… f**k… Adelaide, I didn’t mean…”
I cleared my throat, blinking away the tears that had gathered in my eyes, in all my years, Liam had never spoken to me like that before and it hurt.
“I think it’s best if you leave.” I whispered, hating how my voice broke.
“Adelaide, please, I…”
I ignored him and made my way into the cottage, closing the door behind me. I pressed my lips together, heading up the stairs to my room. I opened the door, Delilah was once again curled up on my sofa, a book in hand.
“What are you doing?” I asked, she sighed, sitting up.
“Hiding, some of the Alpha’s came with their sons and Mum is trying to play matchmaker.” She replied “Is the memorial over?”
I sighed, walking over and plopping down next to her.
“No."
"Oh, so what are you doing here?" she inquired.
"I’m hiding too.” I whispered, my mind going back to Liam’s words and how they made my heart hurt, a lot.
“Delilah?”
“Hmm?”
“If you were so sure about something but everyone else thought it was wrong, would you change your belief?” I asked. She sat up, setting her book aside.
“Well, if it was me, I would change my belief, I don’t like conflict but you’re not like me, Ms Adelaide. You’re strong, brave and fierce. You stand up to Alpha Prime Jacob and even if you weren’t an Alpha Prime and a Lycan in your own right, you would still have stood up to him.” she replied, before turning her attention back to her book. I considered her words, I was certain there was something wrong with Kamilla yet I was beginning to second guess myself.
“Oh… Ms Adelaide, can I go to work with you tomorrow? I overheard my mother making plans.” she pleaded. I smiled at her, patting her hand.
“Sure Delilah, you’ll always find refuge with me.”
