Chapter Forty Six

2276 Words
I woke up early the next day, before the sun rose. It was time to put my plan in action. I got dressed in my work out clothes, not that I worked out but it was the perfect cover. I pulled my hair into a ponytail before making my way down the stairs to the back door. I opened the door and slipped out, using the shadows as my cover, I headed in the direction of the forest. Kneeling, I placed a hand on the forest ground, feeling the pulse of every living creature including the guards and where they were stationed. Satisfied that I could avoid them, I began my journey, avoiding all the guards until I finally got to Samara’s hut. Creeping closer, I watched for any sign of movement but found none. Either she’s asleep or she isn’t in. Hoping for the latter, I continued, stopping by the window and peeking in, the inside was the same, nothing had changed and most importantly there was no sign of Samara. I walked over to the door and gently pushed it, it creaked open and I slipped in. Now where could she have kept the seeds? I stood in the middle of the hut, looking around trying to figure out where she must have kept them. I walked over to the drawers, searching them to no avail. I moved to the table and shelves but I couldn’t find them. Think Adelaide, think. Where could she have kept them? I huffed, my hands on my waist as I continued to look around before my eyes landed on a basket underneath her bed. Bingo I got on my hands and knees and pulled out the basket, rifling through it, smiling victoriously when I found the seeds. I picked out two before placing the rest back in the basket. I got up to leave when the sound of movement outside made me freeze. Shit! My eyes darted around the room looking for a place to hide before I scrambled to the closet, I got in and closed the door just as the front door swung open. I held my breath expecting Samara’s footsteps instead I was met with heavy stomps and growls as bowls, pots and pans were thrown carelessly around. It’s the creature… I swallowed hard, trying to regulate my breathing and stop my heart from beating so fast. I was tempted to peek through the crack and see what kind of animal it was but I wasn’t about to tempt fate so instead I continued hiding as it wrecked Samara’s hut before leaving. Its footsteps receded until I couldn’t hear them anymore. I waited for a few more seconds before I stepped out of the cupboard, my eyes widened at the scene in front of me, the cottage had been completely ransacked, it was as if it had been looking for something. Whatever it is, I am not about to stick around and find out. With that, I made my way out of the hut and using my Lycan speed, I ran back to the cottage, walking in through the front door this time around. ***** I picked up Delilah from her house and drove us to the Consulate. It was a quiet drive as Delilah was engrossed in a book about photography while my mind was still on the creature that had ransacked Samara’s hut. Once we got to the Consulate, Delilah went off to find Hope and Lauren while I headed up yo my office. Liam? Yeah? Meet me in my office. Alright. I got to my office and placed my bags aside, scanning through some documents and minuting them to Magnus who would minute them to the various heads of departments that made up the Consulate. The doors opened and Liam walked in. “Good morning.” He said, taking a seat. “Morning Liam” I replied, glancing at him before continuing with my work. Once I was done, I placed the documents in the outgoing box before turning to him. “I got the seed.” He raised a brow. “You actually broke into her hut.” “I won't call it breaking and entering, the door was practically open.” I replied, zipping open my bag and taking out a tissue paper. I opened it to reveal the seeds, placing them on the table. He leaned closer, picking one up and examining it. “I've never seen a seed like this before.” He whispered. “Same here.” It was small and iridescent. “What do you think it grows into?” Liam asked. I shrugged, staring at it. “I have no idea but there is no time for dilly dallying, I need to find out what the seed does, Jacob told me he and Kamilla are going away and I overheard them talking about something called the Resurgem.” “The Resurgem? What the hell is that?” He asked. “I have no idea but it seems of great importance and I don't trust Kamilla with it.” I replied. “So what are we going to do now?” I pursed my lips, thinking. “I'm going to call Agatha.” I stated. “Agatha?” “The witch who helped me brew the poison that can kill an Alpha Prime.” I explained. “Oh, okay.” I brought out my phone and dialled her number, she answered after a few minutes. “Agatha's Apothecary, how may I help you?” “Hello Agatha” “Adelaide?!” She uttered in a shock filled voice. “You have been a very busy Lycan.” I chuckled. “I need your help with something.” “Not another poison, I hope.” Something in her voice told me she wouldn't mind if I made her whip me up some poison. “No, I want you to take a look at a seed. Do you mind if I call you on video call?” I inquired. “Go ahead.” I immediately switched to video call, watching as her face appeared. “Prime.” She greeted “You look well.” “Thank you. This is my cousin, Liam. Liam, this is Agatha.” I said, introducing them before picking up the seed and holding it to the camera. “What do you think?” She stared at it, brows furrowed. “This is strange, I have never seen anything like this before. Can you hold it closer to the camera?” She asked, I did as she asked. “Hang on…” She disappeared from view, before coming back with a large tome. “Where did you find it?” She asked, flipping through pages. “I could narrow it down if you describe the tree.” “Actually I didn't find it on a tree, but apparently it produces flowers that are used to make a drink called bræw.” I explained. “Bræw? What kind of drink is that?” I shrugged. “A drink made in Jacob's territory by an old woman, the entire pack consumes it.” “Huh… there's not much I can work with.” “So what do you suggest we do?” I asked. “Maybe plant it and see what type of flower blooms?” She suggested making me huff. “That's too slow, I don't have the time for that.” “Well there is a way of making it grow really fast, you'll have a full bloomed flower in 2 days tops.” My head perked up at that. “I'm listening.” “It's a potion, you'll have to get the ingredients from your local apothecary and brew it yourself to my exact directions.” Liam and I glanced at each other. “I'm down.” He said. “Same here, so what and what do we need?” I asked. “You'll need a pen and paper.” I tore a piece of paper and grabbed a pen, looking at her expectantly. “Alright, the root of the moa tree with the soil still attached to it, moon water…” **** I stared at the list in my hand which looked more and more insane as I looked at it. “I've found an apothecary close by.” Liam said, walking over with his phone. While I had been busy writing the ingredients and directions, he had gone ahead to find an apothecary. “Great, let's go. The sooner I can get to the bottom of this mystery, the better I'll feel.” We walked out to my car and got in. “Damn, Jacob really went all out with the car.” Liam said. “Yeah, it was really nice of him but now he is acting like a complete asshole.” I muttered, driving out of the Consulate. “All because of the Kamilla chick?” He asked. “Yes! There is clearly something off about her and her men yet no one in the pack seems to notice and she tries so hard to be nice to me and I don't even know why, I have no desire to be friendly with her.” I snapped, tightening my grip on the steering wheel. “And she keeps offering me food and that blasted bræw…” I slammed on the brake, ignoring Liam's curse and the honks of angry motorists behind me. “Geez Addy, warn someone before you slam on the brake.” He said, scowling at me. “Liam, she tried to get me to drink the bræw… what if the bræw has some mind control properties?” I asked. The horns increased and I sighed before I continued driving. “You think she is using the bræw to control the pack?” “I nodded.” “Yes!!” “And Samara, where does she fall in this?” I fell silent as I thought about it. “I hate to say this… but I think she's probably working with Kamilla.” I whispered. “I still say we let the flower bloom, that way we have concrete evidence.” He said, I nodded. “Definitely.” We arrived at the apothecary, Liam placed a hand on my arm. “Let me get the ingredients, we have to keep this as lowkey as possible, we don't know who might be watching.” He explained. “You're right.” I handed him the list and watched as he got out and headed into the shop. I sighed, tapping my fingers against the steering wheel. He came back a few minutes later with a large bag. “Got everything?” I inquired. “Yeah.” He said. “I do not envy witches in any shape or form, the ingredients they have to deal with are downright nasty.” I laughed and he rolled his eyes at me. “I also got us a cauldron and a burner.” “Good thinking.” I drove back to the Consulate. “Where are we going to do this?” I asked. “Uh… how about my bathroom, I mean she says it's going to take hours to brew and you'll have to go back to Yellowstone.” He suggested making me nod in agreement. “That makes sense.” We headed up to his room and got started, following Agatha's precise instructions. *** “So now we let it brew for a few hours.” I said, staring down at the purple mixture in the cauldron. “Pretty much. Come on, let’s go get something to eat.” I smiled just as my stomach rumbled. Who knew potion making took so much energy? **** I dropped Delilah at home and drove down the empty road towards the Cottage, my mind on the potion and what it would do to the seed. I had to expose Kamilla, there was no way I was going to let that go. I let out a gasp as something slammed into the side of my car, sending the vehicle lurching sideways. The steering wheel twisted under my grip as I fought to steady it. “What the f**k?!” I slammed on the brake, immediately getting out of the car, my eyes widened as I stared at the large bloody dent, it was as if someone had thrown something at the side of my car with some much force it had bounced. I swallowed nervously, it was as if someone was watching me and the trail of blood didn’t make things easier. Damn it Adelaide, you are an Alpha Prime!!! Act like one. I swallowed hard and followed the trail of blood towards the treeline, my heart pounding with every step I took. Finally I reached a large cluster of trees and in the darkness I could see someone curled, their back to me. The stench of blood and death emanating from the figure, an all too familiar scent that brought back unwanted memories, I walked closer, ignoring the alarm bells in my head, reaching the body. I knelt and rolled it over. A scream pierced the night and before I could fully process that the scream had come from me, a loud booming sound echoed around me like the crack of a whip and I was in Jacob’s arms. “Adelaide?! What happened? Are you okay?” He asked, his hands running over my body looking for any injuries. I shook my head, eyes wide as I lifted a shaky hand and pointed at the body “S-Samara… someone killed Samara.”
