Jacob got to his feet, pulling me up. He brushed the hair away from my face, his thumb coming down to cup my chin.
“Are you okay?” He asked, leaning in, brows furrowed.
“Y-yeah” I nodded, swallowing hard before pulling away from him. “We should go.”
He nodded, we walked in silence back to Jacob’s cottage where the dungeons were. I glanced down at my wrist, the bite marks were gone, healed by his blood. Somehow I expected to feel happy that I had uncovered the link between the creature and Kamilla yet all it felt was a pit in the bottom of my stomach.
The elevator doors opened and we stepped into the dungeons, the creature had woken and was dangling from the chains, it smirked as we approached, its red glowing eyes staring at us eerily.
“If it isn’t the Alpha and Luna Prime.” he sang, his fangs on full display.
“I’ll ask this question once, what are you?” Jacob asked, the man tittered, the chains swinging as he swayed from one side to the other.
“You keep asking the wrong questions.”
His eyes met mine, something flashing through his eyes and he licked his fangs.
“Some things don’t change…”
I shuddered, the memory of his tongue on my skin making me sick to my stomach.
“Look at my Luna one more time and she’ll be the last thing you see.” Jacob growled, the man laughed once more, hysteria tinged his laughter.
The elevator doors opened and Tony stepped out, with Kamilla. I pushed off the wall, this was the first time I was seeing her after finding out she was Liam’s mate.
Shit… Liam, how was I going to tell him this?!
“What’s going o..”
She trailed off, her eyes staring at the man hanging off the chains, she swallowed nervously, turning to Jacob who was staring at her.
“Jacob I…”
“Explain.” He demanded, cutting her off. She glanced at me, a helpless look in her eyes, I looked away, not knowing what to do but also knowing she needed to come clean.
“I wanted to tell you Jacob, I just didn’t know…”
He surged towards her, towering over her.
“If the next words out of your mouth aren’t explanations, I will make your life a living hell Kamilla.” He threatened, his voice quiet and deadly. Tears pricked her eyes but they did nothing to him.
“Okay, Adelaide… Adelaide is right. I am not a wolf.” she whispered, my eyes widened, lips parted in surprise, I could feel the shock rippling through the dungeon from Tony’s bulging eyes to Jacob’s still body. The tears rolled down her cheeks as she continued.
“My men and I, we are Vampyrs.”
“Impossible, Vampyrs are extinct.” I whispered, taking a step forward. She stared at me, sobbing slightly.
“No, we survived the Persecution, though we were drastically reduced in number, we retreated to the shadow of society, some of us found ways to blend in with others.” she explained.
“So where do i fit in all of these, why have you been consistently coming to my pack in the guise of helping me?” Jacob asked. More tears fell down her cheeks, she shook her head, looking down at the ground, almost as if the truth was too much for her.
“ANSWER ME!!!” Jacob shouted.
“Because you are a part of me.” she cried out, her shoulders shaking as she clasped a hand over her lips to muffle the sobs.
What?!
I blinked, trying to process the words she had just uttered.
Jacob was a part of her? What did that mean? Was she his mother? No, that’s impossible.
“W-what?” He stuttered, she sniffed back the tears, staring at him with red rimmed eyes.
“29 years ago I heard news of an ailing Luna Prime who was in danger of losing her unborn child, so I travelled to the continent, disguised as a witch, the Alpha Prime welcomed me with open arms and I offered a cure which was made up of my blood. For months, I stayed with them, making sure my blood made the Luna and her unborn child strong. A few months later, you were born.”
The room was silent, my brain trying to digest the bombshell Kamilla had just dropped.
“T-this doesn’t make any sense.” Jacob whispered, taking several steps away from her, his face pale as he turned to face me. I took a step forward, wanting to comfort him but he turned back to her.
“A-are you s-saying that I am a v-vampyr?”
She shook her head.
“You are still a Lycan, my blood just gave you additional powers possessed by Vampyrs.” she explained. My eyes widened as Jacob let out a laugh, his shoulders shaking as he continued laughing.
“J-Jacob” I called out, concerned. He stared at her and I could see the pain, anger and hurt etched in his face and it tugged at my heart.
“So all these while, you knew, YOU f*****g KNEW!!!” he roared, tears streaming down his cheeks.
“I…” Kamilla parted her lips but no other words came out as Jacob’s harsh breathing filled the dungeon.
“You f*****g knew, and out of everyone here, I confided in you, I told you how I struggled with the bloodlust and the voices in my head and you knew what was wrong with me.”
More tears fell down Kamilla’s cheeks as she shook her head, taking a step closer to him. He shook his head before speeding out of the dungeon. Kamilla ran over to me, grabbing onto my arms.
“Please you have to go after him, I don’t know what he might do in his state but please just go after him. I will never forgive myself if he does something drastic.” she begged, I stared down at her and nodded, still in shock.
“Of course, I’ll bring him back.”
With that I zoomed out of the basement to the main house, he wasn’t in the main house, the front door was wide open and I could hear the cracking of thunder and flashes of lightning. I sped into the rain, gasping at how hard it was raining.
Shit where could he be? And the rain is going to wash off his scent.
My Lycan whined, not liking the state our mate was in.
Don’t worry girl, we’ll find him.
I placed a hand on the wet soil, closing my eyes, picking up on every living thing. I ignored them, searching for only one pulse. My eyes snapped open the moment I picked up on it.
Found you
I sped off in the direction, the rain falling harder making it harder to see. I narrowly avoided a lightning strike, but was struck by the next one. I gasped in pain as the force threw me in the air. I landed on my side, groaning, I rolled onto my back, staring up at the dark clouds and the torrential rain.
You have to keep moving, if you don't find him, Yellowstone will be flooded before the night ends.
I got back to my feet, ignoring my sore muscles and singed hair, taking off instead, ignoring the strikes.
I found him near a cliff, his shirt drenched, the wind whipping his hair. He was pacing around, his fingers digging into his hair. I could feel the wave of pain and confusion rolling off him, the lightning strikes becoming more erratic.
“JACOB!!!” I screamed, trying to approach him but it was too dangerous.
“I know how it feels!!!” I shouted. “You feel confused and hurt and not in control, it feels like your entire life has been a complete lie.”
The strikes reduced in their frequency and I slowly inched towards him.
“It sucks, I know, all you want to do is make the world hurt the way you do.”
I finally reached him, his back was to me, his shoulders heaving. I placed a hand on his back, he turned around and I was blown away by the pain in his glowing crimson eyes.
“F-for y-years s-she knew… she knew the truth about me…”
I pulled him into a hug, knowing this was exactly how I felt after finding out he had sent letters to my father and to me and Nanna Ur had told him about my father changing my mate. I felt completely at loss and I knew nothing I could say could make the feeling go away.
He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tightly, burying his nose in my hair. I let my hands stroke his back feeling all the muscles relax under my touch. The rain reduced in its intensity, becoming a light drizzle. We stayed like that, hugging each other. After a while, I took a step back, staring up at him.
“Are you ready to head back?”
His eyes darkened.
“I don’t ever want to see her again.” He mumbled, I sighed, taking a step closer to him.
“I know you’re angry and hurting but you need answers and only she can provide them.”
He looked at me, a scoff escaping his lips.
“Since when are you a reasonable person?”
I smirked, rolling my eyes.
“Well we can’t have two dramatic people in this relationship.” I replied, wrapping my hand around his wrist, pulling him forward only for him to tug me backwards, I stumbled, crashing into his chest.
“Wha…”
I trailed off, his gaze intense as he cupped my face.
“I’m sorry Adelaide, you were right about Kamilla and I didn’t…”
I shook my head, smiling at him.
“You were under her influence, there was no way you were going to believe me.”
He frowned.
“Her influence?”
I nodded.
“The braew, it’s made using the V… flower and one of its properties is mind control.” I explained, he shook his head.
“H-how’d you know all of these?”
“Well, after I saw Kamilla and Samara at night, I crept into Samara’s hut to find the seeds, then Liam and I had to brew a potion to expedite the growth of the seed to find out what type of plant it was.”
He raised a brow, clearly impressed.
“You really are formidable, Adelaide Silverstone.” He whispered, a hint of reverence in his voice. I grinned, my Lycan preening at the compliment.
“Come on, let’s head back.”
We walked in silence, reaching the cottage. I opened the door and we walked in, Kamilla was pacing the length of the foyer. She turned to us, her eyes landing on Jacob, before she took a step forward.
“Oh, Thank god you’re okay, I was so worried.” she whispered, pausing when he took a step back. I could see the hurt gleaming in her eyes.
“I just want to know why you never told me about my heritage, after all these years.” he uttered, she swallowed, looking at the ground.
“I wanted to tell you, I really did but I just didn’t know how… there’s so much at stake and I just…” she trailed off. Jacob let out a scoff.
“So much at stake, what could be more important than easing my fears about who I was? You more than anyone knew about my bloodlust, about the guilt I felt about every soul I drained to sate the beast within me. You taught me how to control it but you didn’t think I deserved to know the truth.” he spat.
Kamilla kept her eyes to the ground but I could see and smell the salty tears rolling down her face. She finally looked up, wiping the tears away.
“I was wrong to keep this away from you but my intentions have always been pure Jacob, from the day I stepped onto this pack to help your parents to the day I came to you about the Resurgem.”
The Resurgem… again…
“I won’t blame you if you never trust or want anything to do with me again, I will give you the coordinates to the Resurgem and then I will leave with my men. You won’t ever have to see me again.” she said.
Unable to keep my curiosity at bay, I spoke up.
“What’s the Resurgem?”
Jacob turned to me.
“I think we should move this conversation to my office.”
We followed him to his office, Kamilla standing in the corner while Jacob pulled out a chair for me. I sat and watched as he dragged a chair towards me and while sitting, he held my hands, looking at the ground, as if he was gathering his thoughts.
“After that… that night at Silverstone, I spiralled, the guilt eating me. Then I decided there had to be a way to bring you back, so I poured through books, I was willing to sell my soul to the devil to undo what I had done and then Kamilla appeared.” he said, glancing at her before turning back to me.
“She spoke of an artefact that was lost to time, the Resurgem. It became my obsession, I didn’t care about the territories I encroached on, I just needed to find it and use it to bring you back.”
I blinked, my head spinning from what he had just said.
“W-wait, let me get this straight, the Resurgem brings back people from the dead?”
“It brings back what was once lost, it’s not limited to people.” Kamilla explained stepping forward.
“Have you found it?” I asked, Jacob nodded.
“Yes, Kamilla and her men found it and the trip I was telling you about, it’s to bring it back,” he replied.
“T-this is insane, how come I have never heard of the artefact before?”
“Like Jacob said, it has been lost to time and not a lot of people knew about it in the first place.” Kamilla said, a sad glimmer in her eyes.
“So where is it?” I asked.
“Chronaris.” she answered.
“Where is that?” I inquired, and she cleared her throat.
“It’s located in the Kalta ice caves.” she replied, i frowned.
“That’s in Iceland.” I uttered.
“Yes.”
I nodded, chewing on my bottom lip.
“I think we should call it a night.” Jacob whispered, I nodded and got to my feet.
“Goodnight.” I said, glancing at Jacob and Kamilla, it was clear they needed to talk.
JACOB
The door closed behind Adelaide and I stared at the floor.
“Jacob”
I looked up at Kamilla, the anger and hurt resurfacing, I clenched my jaw as she stepped closer to me.
“I…”
“For seven year you have been coming to my lands and you didn’t think I deserved to know.” I uttered, she swallowed, placing a hand on my arm. My lycan growled, furious with her betrayal.
“I’m sorry, you’re right i should have told you but, I just didn’t know how to.”
I scoffed, moving away.
“You know i should have become suspicious when you taught me how to control my bloodlust but I just thought you had probably met someone like me during your travels.”
I let out a humourless chuckle at that.
“Please Jacob, I never meant to hurt you.”
I looked back at her, memories of her deception playing out in my head.
“It’s too late for that, after we find the resurgem, I want you and your men to leave.” I whispered, her eyes widened but she nodded.
“As you wish.”
I brushed past her and left the office, I had more pressing matters to attend to, like having a way to have Adelaide forgive me for what I had done to her.
ADELAIDE
If anyone had told me that today would end how it did, I would have called them a freaking liar. I was back in my room, staring at my phone thinking of how I was going to let Liam know that his mate was a Vampyr.
Best to have this conversation in person.
I winced slightly at the stiffness of my shoulder, I moved to the mirror, unbuttoning my shirt, gasping as my eyes landed on the scar. It ran from my shoulder down to my wrist. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The scar branched and forked, splitting out in thin veins like roots. The jagged lines were a deep red, fresh and angry with tiny blisters forming around the edges. I hissed slightly as I traced the pattern, the skin tender and raw.
“Adelaide?”
The door opened and Jacob walked in, I spun around, his eyes widening at the sight of the scar, in a matter of seconds he was in front of me, his hand gently holding my arm.
“What happened? Who did this to you?”
‘It’s fine, I’ll heal, I don’t know why it isn’t already healed.” I mumbled. He paused before looking at me.
“This is from a lightning strike, I did this.”
“It wasn’t on purpose.” I replied. “I was looking for you and well… this happened.”
He inhaled sharply before extending his arm, turning his wrist upward, the veins just visible beneath his skin.
“Drink, it will heal you faster.”
I stared at his wrist, my Lycan already eager for a taste of his blood. The air in the room became thick with tension. We stood inches apart. His breath was uneven as he waited. This wasn’t like the other times where he had me drink his blood, this felt different, scared and intimate even.
“Are you sure?” I whispered, he nodded.
“Take it.”
I held his wrist up to my mouth, my lips brushing the inside of his wrist. Closing my eyes, I sank my fangs into his skin, my Lycan moaning as the first taste hit us like an electric jolt, warm and full of life. His reaction was immediate: a sharp inhale. I felt the scar cool, the flesh stitching itself. I felt his other hand cupping my face, his thumb brushing my cheek as I withdrew. My eyes met his, our breaths mingled together.
He leaned in, capturing my mouth with his. The kiss was intense and full of devotion, it was slow at first, tender. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer, the kiss deepened and I moaned softly. He pulled back, our chest heaving.
“W-when I get the Resurgem…” he began, his eyes swirling with so much honesty. “I want you to have it.”
My eyes widened.
“J-Jacob”
“It’s the least I could do after everything I put you through.” he whispered.
I nodded.
“Then I’m coming with you to get it.”
“Adelaide, it can be dangerous.”
I shrugged.
“Exactly, someone has to protect you.”
He chuckled.
“Protect me huh?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
His eyes drifted back to my lips.
“Deal.”
I leaned up and captured his lips with mine.
