“Ms Adelaide… Ms Adelaide…”
I jumped, snapping back into reality. A sigh escaped my lips as I massaged my temple, staring at my laptop screen.
“Are you okay?” Delilah asked.
“Yeah, I'm just tired.” I replied, forcing a smile. The truth was I was running on fumes, it had been two days since the incident with Jacob and I hated to admit it but I was being cowardly and was avoiding him, plus I wasn't getting any sleep. The nightmares kept me up and I wasn't about to go to the kitchen to get a cup of warm milk for fear of bumping into him
“Ms Adelaide…”
I glanced at her, realising I had zoned out again
“Sorry, um, what did you want?” I inquired.
“I asked you what you wanted for lunch.” She said, I glanced at her.
“What are they cooking in the kitchen?”
“Well Prime is away, that's why the chef asked me to ask you.” She explained. I perked up at her words.
“Jacob's not around?”
“Yes, he has business down south.” She explained.
“Do you have any idea when he's going to be back?”
She shrugged.
“I have no idea, maybe tomorrow or the day after that.”
A smile crept up my lips, relieved that he was gone.
“Tell the chef to make me something light, maybe a chicken salad.” I replied, smiling.
“Alright then, I'll let them know.” I watched her leave before turning back to the laptop. I had sent an email to the European Wolf Registry a day ago and they were still collating the data I needed.
My phone rang and I glanced at it.
Magnus Calling.
“Hello Magnus.”
“Good afternoon Prime, there's a representative from the Antarctic Alpha Prime.” He relayed. I frowned, brows furrowed.
“What does the Antarctic Alpha Prime want with me?”
“Well, now that news of your appearance has hit the international community, all the other Alpha Primes would definitely want to reach out. Forge new connections and reinforce old ones.” He explained.
I made a noise at the back of my throat, Magnus was right and as much as I had no interest in getting friendly with the Alpha Primes that had let Jacob get away with murder for so long, I knew I needed those connections for the sake of my continent, no man was an island… well maybe Jacob was but I wasn't about to be placed in the same classification as him.
“Alright then, can you send a car and also let him know I'll be right there.”
I ended the call and walked over to the closer, shrugging off the sweatpants and tank I was in. I pulled on a pair of flared charcoal black high waist pants, coupling it with a striped button down cream coloured shirt before running my fingers through my hair until I was satisfied with how it looked. Glancing at my reflection, I nodded. I looked every bit like the Alpha Prime I was.
I picked up a bag and slid on my heels, applying my lipstick and some eyeliner, just as the door opened.
“Uh…”
I glanced over at a confused Delilah.
“I'm going to the consulate.” I explained, adjusting the strap of my watch. “I don't know what time I'll be back so you can have the rest of the day off.”
“What about lunch?” She inquired.
“Can the kitchen pack it up for me? I’ll have it at the consulate.”
She nodded and I watched her leave. I placed my laptop and notepad into a bag. I would probably get some work done while I was there. My phone beeped and I turned my attention to it.
Magnus- The car is here.
Once I had everything I needed, I made my way out of the room to the ground floor, bumping into Delilah who was holding a small bag.
“Your lunch.”
“Thank you.” I replied, smiling at her before getting into the car.
*****
The car came to a stop in front of the consulate steps, a guard opened the door and I stepped out.
"Alpha Prime" He greeted, bowing his head. I nodded at him, making my way up the stairs into the consulate. Magnus was already waiting for me.
"Good afternoon Ms Adelaide. "
"Good afternoon Magnus, how are you?" I asked as we headed to my office, it still felt weird to call my father's office mine but I knew it was something I was going to have to get used to.
"I am well.” He replied, I settled on the seat, glancing at Magnus. I ran my palms over my thighs.
“Any tips on how to go about this?” I inquired, feeling a bit nervous at the thought of receiving a visitor from another Alpha Prime.
“Just be polite, firm and the rest will come naturally to you.” He answered. I nodded, sitting up.
“Alright, I can do this. Let him in.”
"As you wish." He replied before leaving. I stared at the doors, a frown on my lips. I wasn't going to pretend to be cool with the rest of the Primes, after the m******e, none of them had confronted or brought Jacob to trial, instead he had gotten away with murder.
The door opening interrupted my musings and I looked up to see a tall slim man dressed in a suit, his hair gelled back, thick black framed glasses on his face.
"Alpha Prime Adelaide Silverstone." He greeted, bowing. "My name is Mr Inuksuuk and I am here on behalf of my Alpha Prime"
"Please sit." I gestured to a chair. “Would you like anything? Tea, water?”
“Tea will be fine.” He answered.
Magnus, can you send in the help with tea please?
Yes, Prime.
I turned my attention to the man, not knowing exactly what to say.
“How can I be of help?”
“First of all, my Prime will like to extend his warm wishes regarding your emergence. With your kind permission, he would like to engage in a video call with you.”
Oh…
I sat up, nodding.
“Oh that’s fine. Shall I call in Magnus to get everything set up?”
“Yes please.”
Magnus can you come in please?
Alright Prime, I’ll be right there.
A few minutes later, the door opened and the help walked in followed by Magnus. She set the tray on the table, bowing before leaving.
“Please help him set up the system for a video call.” I instructed, making myself a cup of tea to help calm my nerves. I had never personally met the Vinson Alpha Prime while my father had been alive but I knew about him. Once they were done setting up the projector and the laptop, Mr Inuksuuk powered it up and I was left alone.
The projector screen came to life and a few seconds later, the face of Alpha Prime Adlartok appeared, he was seated, another middle aged man was standing behind him.
“Adelaide Silverstone! My eyes don't deceive me at all. When I saw the news, I could barely believe it, a surviving Silverstone.” he began, a warm smile on his lips, I smiled back.
“Prime Adlartok…”
“Oh, no need to be so formal. Call me Adlartok after all your father, bless his soul, and I were close friends. His death affected me in so many ways.”
Yet you didn’t do anything about it
I bit my tongue to stop the words from spewing out.
“The world lost a great man.” I replied.
“And your mother, I have never encountered a finer Luna Prime than her.” His words brought up several memories that I would rather keep buried so I cleared my throat, stopping him mid sentence.
“Adlartok, I’m sure you didn’t set up this meeting to reminisce on your closeness with my parents.” I stated.
“Ah, straight to the point, just like Charles but you are right, I didn’t call for that. How are you Adelaide? Especially with the recent happenings.” he inquired. I swallowed hard, picking at my trousers.
“I’m okay, nothing I can’t handle.” I replied. He shook his head.
“You don’t have to be strong with me Adelaide, it’s okay to show vulnerability to those who genuinely care for you. Think of me as a godfather, you are not alone anymore.” He urged. I couldn’t help the surge of raw emotions that coursed through me, looking away from the screen, I blinked the tears away. For years, all I had were Uncle Pete and Liam, and to hear someone say that to me, it felt like someone had taken a rocket launcher to my stone wall.
“I..It’s been hard.” I whispered, remembering how bad the last few days had been.
“I can imagine, having your face and good name defamed, it does something to one's mental health. I heard one of the newspaper houses was burnt to the ground and the chief editor was found bloody and beaten to a pulp.”
I frowned, shocked to hear that.
“I have been avoiding the news and the papers. Do you have any idea who did that?” I asked.
“No, but it was likely some of your loyal supporters. No right thinking wolf would stay put as the name of their Alpha Prime is besmirched in the papers.”
I nodded, looking down at my fingers.
“Have you thought about rejecting him?” He asked quietly.
“He threatened to kill my cousin if I did and Liam means more to me than my plans for revenge.” I answered.
“Sacrifices have to be made.”
My head shot up, eyes narrowed on the man standing behind Adlartok.
“Excuse me?”
“Forgive my Beta Prime, he forgets his station at times.” Adlartok cut in, I stared at the Beta Prime, there was something about him that just didn’t sit well with me.
“Besides, rejecting Jacob Mont Blanc won’t solve anything. He’ll kill my cousin, refuse my rejection and keep me prisoner in his territory.” I continued.
“There has to be something we can do, no one deserves to live with a deranged out of control monster.” he muttered. I leaned back in my seat.
“If you have any ideas then I’m all ears.”
He kept quiet, his brows furrowed.
“How bad do you want him gone?” he asked, his voice low. I stared at him, knowing the implications of his words. I looked down at my table, thinking about every horrible thing Jacob had done to me. From the threats to the humiliation.
“As bad as I need oxygen.” I replied, he nodded.
“That’s all I need to know. I’ll reach out to you with a plan, stay strong Adelaide. You will come out victorious at the end.”
“Thank you.” I whispered.
“No need to thank me, like I said your father was a close friend of mine and it is time for Jacob to pay for his crimes." He replied. "Do keep in touch Adelaide. I am very much glad that you are alive and the Silverstone bloodline continues."
I smiled as the video call ended.
Magnus, I’m done. I informed him. The door opened and they walked in. I got to my feet, approaching the representative.
“Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule. You will forever be in the good graces of the Silverstone Prime.”
“Thank you Alpha Prime.” He said bowing.
“Magnus will show you out, I have another business to attend to.” I explained, making my way out of my office.
Liam, where are you?
In my room, what’s up?
Can you meet me in the Prime Suite?
Alright, be there in a minute.
I headed to the Prime Suite, shrugging off my jacket and sitting on the sofa before getting up. I was too restless to sit, it felt as if I had a billion fire ants on my body.
“I’m here, how did the meeting go?” He asked, closing the door behind him.
“Adlartok is offering to kill Jacob and I took it.” I blurted out. Liam froze, eyes wide, brows raised.
“Uh… what?”
I plopped down on the sofa
“He asked me how bad I wanted Jacob gone and I told him, then he said he would get back to me after formulating a plan.” I explained, he let out a low whistle.
“He must really hate him,”
"If he hated him so much, then why didn't he make any attempt to kill him until now?" I inquired. Liam was silent, brows knitted together as he thought over my question.
"You think he is up to something?"
"Definitely... no one offers their help out of the goodness of their hearts.” I mumbled.
“Are you having second thoughts?”
I shook my head.
“Eda no! I need Jacob dead so I can move on with my life. If I have to make a deal with the devil then so be it.”
****
I ended up staying at the Consulate until late in the evening when I decided to head back to Yellowstone.
“Welcome back Luna Prime.” The guards greeted me, I hummed a reply, making my way into the cottage and up to my room, more than happy that Jacob was far away from here. The atmosphere seemed to be lighter, positive even without his presence.
I dropped my bag and changed into my nightwear, going through my night routine before slipping into bed, the thought of finally having my revenge on Jacob and leaving his stupid continent lulling me to sleep.
****
A sigh escaped my lips as I pressed my head to the cabinet door, my eyes drooping while I waited for the milk to heat up. My night was not going well at all, the nightmares persisted and I had woken up, drenched in sweat, fear clinging to my very bones. Every part of my body ached, I was certain if I were human my body and mind would have given out a long time ago.
I turned to grab a mug when a strangled gasp left me. My heart slammed against my ribcage as my eyes landed on Jacob.
“What the hell are you doing here?!” I demanded, trying to calm my racing heart. He frowned, tilting his head to the side.
“I live here.”
I rolled my eyes at him.
“You know what I meant. Aren't you meant to be somewhere else?”
He pushed off the wall, approaching me. I stopped myself from taking a step back even as I remembered our last encounter. I didn't trust myself around him and frankly, I would be lying if I didn't say he scared me.
“I finished up early, so I decided to come back home and find out why my Luna Prime is hell bent on avoiding me.” He replied, stopping a few feet away from me.
I clenched my jaw, folding my arms across my chest as I regarded him with a look of scorn.
“I don't have to tell you anything.” I spat, moving to the stove and turning off the fire.
Great… the cinnamon stick stayed in for too long and now it's going to be bitter… This is all his fault.
I glared at the pot, wishing I could throw the contents on the cause of my misery instead I poured it into the sink, slamming the pot on the counter a bit harder than necessary. I moved to the fridge, deciding to get a bottle of water. I could feel him moving around the kitchen but I paid him no mind, instead pouring the water into a glass cup and sitting at the table.
“Here drink this, it's an old family recipe, it should help you sleep.” He instructed, a mug coming into my line of sight. I raised a brow, staring at the mug before turning my attention to him.
“I'll pass.” I answered, sipping my water.
He sighed, placing the mug on the table.
“You are clearly not sleeping well.” He began.
“Gee, I wonder why?” I drawled, unable to stop myself. I got up, making my way to the sink to rinse the cup. He shook his head at me.
“Look for the sake of you not looking like the undead and for me to get a good night's sleep without having to wake up to your constant pacing just put aside your disdain for me and drink.” He implored. I eyed the mug.
“What's in it?” I asked. He smiled, picking up the mug and approaching me.
“Why don't you drink and find out?”
I pursed my lips, contemplating whether to take it or not. Sighing, I took the mug from him, staring at the dark brown liquid.
“Wait… this is hot chocolate.”
“I never said it wasn't.” He replied, shoving his hands into his pockets. I glared at him before lifting the cup and taking a sip. My taste buds sang as the thick rich liquid chocolate washed over them.
“Better than the milk huh?”
I scowled, wishing I could wipe the smug smile off his handsome face.
Really Adelaide?!
I took several sips.
“It's okay.” I replied, about to brush past him when a wave of dizziness hit me, I stumbled, crashing into him.
“Woah there.” He whispered, wrapping his arms around me. I blinked trying to stop the room from spinning but it only seemed to make it worse, my arms and legs felt like jelly.
“Let's keep this aside.” He took the mug from me and placed it on the counter.
“W-what…” My tongue was heavy and thick, I could barely control it. A soft whimper escaped my lips, my world tilted once more as he carried me up, one arm under my knees, the other hand supporting my back.
I moaned, nuzzling my face into his neck before my head lolled back, sapped of strength. I stared up at him, trying to gather my thoughts together.
“Y-you d-drugged me” my words slurred. He glanced down at me, his eyes devoid of the red hue.
“Well I had to get you to sleep one way or another.”
“A…ass…hole” I whispered, trying to form my hand into a fist but it was impossible, I was exhausted, my eyes barely staying open. I knew we were moving, his eyes occasionally flicking down to me. I moaned softly as I felt myself being placed on my bed, the covers pulled over me.
“I…I’m g…going to m..make you p..pay for th…”
I was dead to the world before I could complete the sentence.
