Clara Bennett
I was wrapped tightly in a white towel, suddenly feeling a rush of embarrassment.
The peach dress was hanging on the back of the bathroom door, but I wanted to dry off properly first.
Steam followed me into the small living room as I clutched the top of the towel with one hand, making sure it stayed in place.
Ryder was still standing near the shelf, but he turned the moment I walked in.
His dark eyes locked onto me instantly. The air in the room suddenly felt thicker.
I froze mid-step, very aware that I was wearing nothing but a towel in front of my boss .... the same man I was supposed to be spying on.
“Sorry,” I said quickly, my voice coming out breathy. “I thought I’d have more time. I’ll go put the dress on right now.”
I took another step toward the bedroom, but my foot caught on the edge of the old rug. I stumbled forward. My hand slipped from the top of the towel.
The towel dropped to the ground...
It pooled around my feet in one smooth motion, leaving me completely naked in the middle of my tiny living room.
“Oh my God!” I gasped, my hands flying up to cover my breasts and between my legs. Heat exploded across my entire body. I bent down fast, trying to grab the towel, but my hands were shaking so badly I fumbled it.
Ryder’s entire body went rigid. His jaw clenched tight, and his eyes darkened as they moved over me.... slow, intense, and hungry.
He didn’t look away. Not even for a second. His chest rose and fell faster, and I saw his hands curl into fists at his sides like he was physically holding himself back.
“Clara…” His voice came out rough, deeper than usual.
I finally snatched the towel off the floor and pressed it against my front, my back turned to him now. My cheeks were burning. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. “I’m so sorry. This is so embarrassing. I didn’t mean for that to happen.”
I could feel him moving closer. The heat from his body reached my bare back before his voice did.
“Don’t apologize,” he said quietly. His breath brushed against my shoulder. “Turn around.”
I hesitated, my fingers gripping the towel so tightly my knuckles hurt. Slowly, I turned to face him, still holding the towel against my chest. My legs felt weak. The way he was looking at me made my stomach tighten with a mix of fear and something much hotter.
Ryder stepped even closer until there was barely any space between us. He towered over me, his suit jacket brushing against my arms. One of his hands came up, hovering near my shoulder like he wanted to touch me but was stopping himself.
“You’re beautiful,” he said, his voice low and strained. “Too damn beautiful.”
My breathing was shallow. I could smell his cologne again, stronger now that he was so close. It made my head spin. Part of me wanted to step forward and let the towel drop again, wrap my legs around him and ride his cock... I wondered if it was big or small, I'd probably never taste it. Another part screamed at me to remember Victor, remember Mom, remember why I was really here.
“I should get dressed,” I whispered, but I didn’t move.
Ryder swallowed hard. His eyes dropped to my lips for a second before coming back up. “The gala can wait if you need more time.”
I shook my head slightly. “No… we should go. People are expecting you.”
He didn’t step back. Instead, his hand finally touched my arm, his thumb brushing slowly over my skin. The contact sent electricity straight through me. My n*****s hardened against the towel, and I knew he could probably see it.
“Clara,” he said, his voice rougher now. “Tell me to stop and I will.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out. My body was betraying me completely. The guilt sat heavy in my chest, but the pull toward him was stronger in this moment. I could feel the heat between my thighs. My legs pressed together instinctively.
Ryder leaned down slightly, his face inches from mine. His free hand came up to cup the side of my neck, his thumb resting just below my jaw. His touch was gentle but possessive. I could feel his breath on my lips.
Just as his mouth hovered dangerously close to mine, my phone started ringing loudly from the couch. The sharp sound cut through the tension like a knife.
I jumped back, clutching the towel tighter. Ryder’s hand dropped slowly. His jaw flexed as he straightened up, clearly fighting for control.
“That’s probably important,” I said, my voice shaky as I backed toward the bedroom. “I’ll… I’ll get dressed now.”
I hurried into the bedroom and closed the door behind me, leaning against it and letting out a long, trembling breath. My entire body was on fire. I touched my lips, still feeling the ghost of how close he had been.
This was getting too dangerous. Way too dangerous.
But as I picked up the sparkling peach dress with shaking hands, I couldn’t ignore the ache between my legs or the way my heart refused to slow down.
