Dr Benson was so nice that Venus could not find one fault to complain about – and she tried. She tried very hard. She had a healthy aversion to doctors and hospitals. She literally needed to be bleeding and on death’s bed before she’d willingly agree to visit a hospital. During her marriage to Walter, it was easy to keep the physical abuse a secret because she never sought medical attention.
