Leofric’s POV
After the party, we went back to our house we have here in the pack. It would be easier on us and Greg and Tovi with us having our own space when we visit, especially for Chloe. I walked in the front door and threw my coat to the side. I sat down to take my shoes off and threw them to the side. It is frustrating knowing that someone I have cared for over the years cannot have me yet because she is not of age!
“Damn brother, what is with you? You were in a good mood when we went to the party and now you look like you are ready to kill someone,” Alaric told me, sitting next to me on the couch.
“Do you remember years ago that I found out I am Piper’s mate and we would find out when she turned eighteen when she got her wolf?” I told him.
“Yeah, I remember the night we were in the Alpha suite and Piper came out to cuddle with you.”
“She got her wolf early, and now she’s upset that she can’t claim me as her mate and I won't let her see me until she’s of age,” I explained.
“Oh s**t! Is that why you were gone for an hour from the party?”
“Yeah, when we were giving her birthday hugs and wishes, she recognized my scent, and her wolf was going crazy. She ran upstairs, with Greg and Tovi joining her a few minutes later. I was getting concerned, so I went upstairs to check on her and she went off on us about knowing before she did. Because we’re conflicted about the bond, I told her to limit our contact until then.”
“Talk about a shitty birthday present, Leo. Especially for my niece. I will go up in the morning to check on her. Are you going to stay for her first shift?” Chloe asked, setting her heels down on the floor.
“No, I am going back home tonight. The hunters are in northern Germany, so I need to get with the generals on the special ops team and create a new diversion to drive them away from us. Besides, it would be best I am not around when she shifts into Venus because she will try to claim me once she has shifted,” I explained to her.
“That sucks, Leo, but I completely understand. Our wolves go crazy when they haven't gotten to claim their mate yet. You better stay faithful to my niece or I will do the same thing my sister did to your dad. I’ll drive a knife through your heart!” Chloe warned me. I chuckled at the last remark.
“Don’t worry, Chlo. I have been faithful to her for the last ten years and I will be until she is of age. Now, if you excuse me, I have a plane to catch.” I got up and hugged Alaric and kissed Chloe’s cheek. I headed upstairs to grab my travel bag and laptop bag before I had to leave.
“I will drive you,” Jed offered, grabbing his keys and walked out the door with me. As soon as we got on the road and off packlands, Jed finally spoke up.
“Maybe it was a bad idea years ago to bring you here. Now, you have a heartbroken girl back there and you are a mess. It will work out when it is supposed to. You will see,” he told me, placing his hand on my shoulder.
“The hardest part of all this is I told her I am going to keep my distance until she ages. We will still keep in contact, but it is best not to have physical contact with her, so nothing doesn’t happen. I mean, it is bad enough I gave her a kiss while we were in the barn, but that was it. At fourteen, her innocence was something I did not want to take. I told her I waited for ten years for her and I will wait another four.” I sighed and put my head into my hands, running them through my hair.
“You made the right choice by doing that, Leo. Does she understand?” Jed asked.
“Yes, and no. She was fighting with her wolf the whole time. Her wolf wants to claim me now, and she wants to wait. Greg even told her to wait so she could finish school and enjoy begin a teenager,” I explained to him.
“Seems to me both of you are keeping a straight head on, except her wolf, which is understandable. She wants to claim you before any other female tries to steal you away from her.”
“I know. Wolves are very possessive of their mates, especially ones with Alpha bloodlines. How is she going to be an Alpha at Mountain Moon and be my queen to the demons?”
“I don’t know, nephew. I have no clue. Hopefully, both of you will have it figured out in a few years.”
We arrived at the airport, and our plane was waiting for us. I hugged Jed and told him the plane would be back in a couple of days. I boarded the plane and sat down, with fourteen hours of work to do for the kingdom and the company.
It was around one in the afternoon when we reached Munich. My new butler, Connor, was there with the car. I finally gave Nigel his much-deserved retirement several years ago and he is living in the village, close to his children.
“My Grace, I hope your trip was a smooth one,” he said as he took my bags to put in the trunk.
“It was. Any news with the hunters?” I asked after he got into the car.
“Ibsan and Hubert sent a team up north twelve hours ago. They are waiting for them to report back,” he informed me. I nodded my head. My phone went off, and I pulled it out. It was a message from Piper. I opened it and read it.
I miss you already. I hope this doesn’t put a damper on our friendship until then.
P
I texted her back and told her no; it didn’t. I still care for her and will have feelings for her until the day I die.
An hour later, we pulled through the gates at the estate. I am having a new wall built around the house, with Greg’s latest security gadgets installed, so the hunters cannot get into the house and harm any of us in there. We pulled up and I got out of the car before Connor even got his door opened. I walked up the stairs where my assistant, Teena, was waiting for me.
“Your Grace,” she said, running after me, “there is no report from the team that got sent up north and you have a meeting in two hours with the board.”
“Thank you, Teena. Reschedule my meeting with the board and have Isban and Hubert check in with me as soon as they hear anything,” I told her, and went into my office. I sat down and went over the company reports when there was a knock. The door opened and my ten-year-old sister, Helene, poked her head into the office.
“Leo, can I color in here for a while?. There is too much noise going on in the house,” Helene asked.
“Yes, you can, Helene, as long as you are quiet,” I told her. She smiled and brought her coloring bag with her. She has her book and crayons in it to color. We both sat there in silence for an hour before Connor entered the room.
“Your Grace, Isban and Hubert are here to talk to you.”
“Thank you, Connor. Please take Helene with you so she doesn’t hear what is going on.” Connor rushed over and helped her clean up and gently led her out of my study. A few minutes later, Isban and Hubert came in.
“Your Grace,” they both said, bowing their heads.
“Generals, any news?”
“Our team got into a scrimmage with them outside of Berlin. We lost two men, but the hunters’ team is completely gone,” Isban announced. I am happy that they could stop them before they got too far south.
“That is good. Any word where their leader could be?”
“They found this on one hunter,” Huburt told me, placing a map on my desk. It showed a location in British Columbia, Canada.
“Well, it is a start. Send a couple of our scouts there to see what is there,” I ordered them. They bowed their heads and left the room. I studied the map some more, seeing if there are anymore clues I can find of their main headquarters. There was another place that caught my attention. It was south of the location that we are sending the scouts. It was outside Vancouver. I called up Isban and told him about my discovery.
“Isban, send two more scouts to Vancouver. I found another location on the map,” I ordered him.
“Right on, Your Grace.”
