Alexander was waiting by his son’s bedside while he was trying to understand the motive that Vignette’s stepfather might have had in causing her any kind of harm. He understood that the man might have several kinds of motives and none of them looked any way good because of what they had done to him. They had taken the self esteem of that man and hard trampled it under the heels of mistress March. But in his defense Vignette had told him a lot of things and in none of them did Alexander feel that that man was worthy of staying close to any of the young girls. He knew that he was not a Saint either but that did not mean that he took advantage of the women who were unwilling.
The nurse came in and said,” I need to check the vitals of the patient.”
