Chapter Eleven

1740 Words
-Victoria’s POV- Three more days have passed. There hasn’t been any kind of attack or weirdness from an artifact for two days now. There are still apparently two more artifacts missing but luckily, the headmaster knows what one of them does and we know what to look for. There is a book that apparently can bring mythical creatures from the book to our reality, and then there is a small pouch with black powder but, the headmaster says that he never really knew what it did. Because everything has settled down, the headmaster has allowed our school to hold its annual Spring festival. It is a small festival in our school where Langston high will be attending. Apparently, it is a tradition that it's done every year with the notion for students to mingle with our neighboring school, but in reality, it is the attempt of our school to trick them into thinking that The Waver Academy is just a normal place. Not sure that it really works giving the way that they always look at us but I don't see people with pitchforks ready to burn our school to the ground so in a way it must work. “This is such a drag, why do we have to do this just to cater to humans!” Jillian says annoyed. She is standing on a chair helping put a banner up for the festival. Almost all students have to help, unfortunately, I am also helping with the stupid banner. Isaac and Luke are helping put the stalls together outside. Marina is helping somewhere else as well and I am stuck with the two people that annoy me the most, Jillian and Erica. We would use magic to make this easier but we are not allowed to use any kind of magic today. “A little more up on the left side.” Erica says. I lift the banner up and wait. Erica nods. “Yea, that looks good.” Once we tie it, we get down and look at the 'to-do list'. Jillian reads the paper. “Set up the table for the judges? It’s for the competition later.” She sighs. We gather everything but then Erica starts to walk away and Jillian and I squint our eyes at her. “Where the hell are you going?” Jillian asks sounding irritated. “Have something to do, I’ll be back later.” Erica says and leaves. “... b***h! All she does I disappear on me this whole damned semester.” Jillian says irritated. I sigh. (Guess it's just the two of us.) ("Hooray") Archion says sarcastically. We walk to the track field where the competitions will be held later and start to set everything up in silence. Ever since what happened last semester, Jillian does not say a thing to me anymore unless she has to and I like it that way. In the end, we had to do everything ourselves because Erica didn’t come back until we were completely done. It is now midday and me and the guys sit outside resting before Langston high arrive. “Spring is just starting, why is it so hot today?” I wine putting a cold bottle of water on my neck. “Because we’ve been working hard.” Luke says. “You all have been working hard, I have been inside helping grandpa with some papers.” Marina says mocking us as she walks to us with Nolan. “Baby, you could have invited me to join you.” Nolan says pouting. “What about you? What have you been doing?” I ask Zach who is sitting next to us. “I was told to help the teachers with the wards around the school. To keep everyone safe.” He says. “That’s so unfair. We've been slaving around while you two have it made.” Holly pouts. I roll my eyes. “You all have supernatural strength. I know it was nothing for you guys so why are you complaining?” She looks away and continues to pout. I look at Zach who is engrossed in his black book, that's all he's done these last few weeks. "You are studying? Now?" I ask him. He closes it and smiles. "No, just some light reading." One of the teachers comes over and hands us all some papers. “These are the students that will be competing today.” She says. I read it and see my name on it. “What?! But why?” I wine. (I don’t want to do any physical straining at all today. I’m already tired.) The teacher shrugs her shoulders. “I don’t know, the headmaster was the one who did these.” She says and leaves. I sigh and continue looking through the paper but then look at Marina. “... Wait... what exactly were you doing with the headmaster Marina? She smiles awkwardly. “Ok fine, it was me. I put your name there.” She confesses. Holly and all the guys start laughing. I look at them. “Are you guys dumb? You know that you are all in the list too, right?” “What?!” They all say confused and start reading the list. “Marina!” They all shout. "What the hell!" Marina hides behind a very annoyed-looking Nolan. “I just didn’t want to leave anyone out, that’s all. And if it’s any consolation, I am on the list too.” She says now coming out from behind him. I squint my eyes. “Let me guess... the headmaster put you in the list and so you modified it so that we would be miserable too.” I cross my arms waiting for her response. She looks away obviously guilty. “No.” She mumbles out. We all sigh. “It’s going to be fun... I changed the games as well.” She says with a big smile. I start reading out loud. “Sack race, egg and spoon race, duck duck goose... what the hell is this?!” “What? Aren't those kids games?” Isaac asks. She starts laughing. “Every year is the same thing so I took the liberty to make it fun.” We all sigh again. Finally, the busses for Langston high start arriving. “Love, don’t forget to put your ring on.” Isaac whispers in my ear. “Oh, yea I almost forgot.” I take it out of my bag and put it on. After my amulet broke last semester, one of the teachers enchanted a ring for me so I could hide my scales, but I really only use it when I am with humans like when I go into town. Since everyone here already knows about me, I don’t have to hide anymore. It feels good not having to keep it a secret. The teachers welcome the students and the festival commences. Thankfully, since we helped to put the festival together, we didn’t get stuck working in booths. We all start walking around and checking things. Then we scatter and go our own ways. “Babe, there’s a booth that I know you are going to like.” Luke says taking my hand. “What is it?” I ask excitedly. Isaac smiles as he walks next to me. “Your stomach is going to love us.” I gasp. “Is it what I think it is?” They don’t say a thing and continue to lead me to a stall. When we get there, I am excited. “Yes! Crepes! Oh my god, I can taste it already.” I tried the for the first time a few weeks ago and I was instantly in love, it is my favorite food now. They both laugh at me. After they order, they hand me my treat and I sink my teeth into it with a moan. Both of the boys look around making sure no one heard me. “Vic, those sounds are only for...” Isaac starts to say but stops and looks at Luke a little annoyed. “Us.” He finishes. Luke looks at me and nods crossing his arms. I look at both of them with an innocent expression. “What noise?” I ask but I know what they mean, I’m just feeling naughty and I want to make it hard for them. They look at each other with stupid expressions and I start laughing. I stop when I hear Marina shouting. The three of us quickly walk over to her voice and see her arguing with one of the girls from Langston high. “Well, I guess I will apologize, but I didn't know. Besides, all I did was talk to him.” The girl says to Marina looking like she’s already bored of the situation. “Wrapping your arm around his and touching his chest is not just talking!” Marina shouts as Nolan pulls her by the arm keeping her from jumping on the girl. I look at a laughing Parker. “You weren't going to help your brother at all, were you?” I ask him knowing the answer. He finally takes a deep breath and smiles at me. “Nope.” I narrow my eyes at him. (He enjoys our misery.) “You know, I can’t wait till you get your mate.” I say but he continues to laugh again. I look back at Marina feeling worried but thankfully Nolan manages to calm her. I look back at my boys who are also staring at the whole scene. I was starting to think that I was grateful I didn’t have to worry about them but then my eyes avert to the side where a few human girls are eying them like they are pieces of candy. I narrow my eyes at both boys and they look at me nervously and confused. “What? What did we do?” Luke asks sounding a little scared. That makes me laugh. “Nothing loves.” I take their hands not caring who sees me. The kids at our school know why we are all together but for humans, this would be... confusing, yet I don’t care. I sigh. “I think it’s time for those games Marina signed us up for.” We all grumble in annoyance but we head to the track field anyways.
